CBSsports: Harbaugh not interested in Michigan job

Submitted by michgoblue on
For the latest in Harbaugh news - this less positive - CBssports claims that "sources close to the coach maintain he is not interested."

Keep in mind that the article is primarily focused on the possibility of Harbaugh landing with the Raiders, does not name a source and is generally NFL focused, but still not encouraging to read. Aside from the above, the article also cites the usual "family doesn't want to move" and "family close to Hoke" reasons for his unlikeliness to move.

As with everything to date, take this for what it is worth - likely, not much - but I have noticed a greater number of not-going-to-happen comments from national media types lately. Obviously, there is a huge echo chamber effect with the media needing to fill a complete void of information re: Harbaugh or our search, so stories will often written with little to no actual information.

This article lost me when it mentioned the Dolphins could be Oakland's greatest competition. I mean it remains semi-accurate in that Ross could be Davis's greatest competition, but not for Miami.

What does the family being close to Hoke have anything to do with it? Hoke's gone already. That decision is over. Hiring Harbaugh would not do anything to Hoke and I would bet that if Hoke loves the school as much as we think he does, he would want us to hire the best coach we can.

So if Hoke was the coach of Oakland, and was fired, Harbaugh would have zero interest in taking over that team too?

I think there is a difference between taking a job from Hoke and taking THE job from Hoke. If this was any other school or any NFL it wouldn't be an issue but if you believe Hoke this was everything he ever wanted.

I have to assume that if asked Hoke would tell Harbaugh to take the job. I'm hopeful that Hoke has or will contact him and tell him to take it if he wants it. What I would really love to see is something public from Hoke to the effect of "If I can't coach there I want Harbaugh to coach there" or something like if this is actually and issue.

Yawn. Smells and looks like a smokescreen to me. Harbaugh is A2 bound. All of the rumors and reports are starting to converge, the exact opposite of the last coaching search.

Harbaugh was reported to have sneezed the other day.   Numerous sources have linked the sneeze to a top secret visit to Ann Arbor where Harbaugh, in disguise,  visited an old friend who has kids in the AA public school system where everyone is sneezing.  The visit, while kept top secret, has been confirmed by an anonymous blogger who has a friend who has a kid in one of the same classes as Harbaugh's friend's kid.

The weekend has just improved drastically.

The "close to Hoke" reason is very weak as
Hoke still loves michigan and wants to see them succeed. So if someone would ask him if it's okay, he would 100% want it to happen

He also was wrong on Harbaugh when he ended up in SF. His stuff about being close to Hoke makes no sense.  Never trust NFL people as sources for college jobs.  He wants the NFL to be the all and end all.

Also Nick Saban was never going back to the NCAA either.

and yesterday I had the shuddering idea that if Jim Harbaugh could be traded for players or draft picks, he could also be traded ... for a COACH.

Harbaugh-for-McCoy? 49ers-Chargers? Gah.

If he does stay in the NFL I hope it's the Raiders or Chargers so we truly know that he simply wants to stay in the NFL and California with due respect to Michigan. If he turns down Michigan to coach the Jets or Falcons or just any random team, that will definitely hurt.

But it all comes down to whether he wants to be like his brother, or be like Bo.

I still tend to believe that if we were totally out of it, we would have known by now. There is another rumor out there that Harbaugh was given a deadline for making any decision by Michigan regardless of his ability to step in right away or not, but I can't remember where I saw that one.

It is entirely possible that Harbaugh doesn't come, but I have a hard time believing that he would drag something like this out any longer than absolutely necessary. I also wonder if the 49ers are not above floating things like this to maximize trade value if they are still into that possibility - I know, that's probably tin foil hat territory...

1. The amount of money that Michigan can pay for a coach rivals what an NFL team can pay 2. Keeping the Harbaugh to Michigan is dead rumor alive directly benefits the 49ers in trade talks It isn't as much a tin foil hat theory as you might think.

This is my Michigan pessimism talking, but I hope we are handling this right. If Harbaugh decides he's staying in the NFL, Hackett should do an expeditious job of letting the fan base know. There will be let down, a grieving process if you will, and for us to embrace someone other than Harbaugh will take some time. Not a lot of time if it's a great coach, but some time. Either Hackett must have an affirmative from Harbaugh or he's really hedging his bets here. Or, scenario c, he has a guy willing to be #2 choice, if Harbaugh passes, and that seems like a strange scenario to me. What great coach wants to be second choice and is willing to wait on his own coaching stuff wherever he currently is?

Sure seems like he's just regurgitating old info on the Michigan piece in this article. Writing about Ross and the Dolphins without mentioning Ross' statement about Michigan and Harbaugh really undermines his entire article. Four fakes out of five.

Harbaugh would not be interested in coaching Michigan. He has not stated this publicy.

There is the possibility of a bidding war for Jimmy's services... He is a hot commodity. The Niners will want compensation if he goes to an NFL team.

This article is just noise. He's coming home.

Harbaugh is not coming IMO. The proof that he is coming is shoddy at best. Last week Stephen A. Smith said Harbaugh is staying in the NFL too and not going to Michigan, because NFL is so awesome and why leave? Bayless didn't disagree. I think we will know more this next week but I recommend people prepare mentally for the worst. Also, Ohio just won an outright title last night. What is the nxt foot to drop?

that the national media and their "sources close to Harbaugh" say he's not interested in the UM job, yet the local media and their "sources close to Harbaugh" say he IS interested (generally speaking, of course).

Who do we trust?

If he should stay as a pro coach or head to Michigan. He will probably make that decision at the end of the 49ers season. I could see JH accepting jobs at Chicago, NYJ, Atlanta or NYG. Any of these jobs would be much better than the Raiders. Though, if he has to listen to his wife it could be the Raiders!

This would suck if JH wants to stay in the NFL. I think if this is the case we should make a hard press for Bob Stoops! I think both Miles and Mullen are off the Michigan list, unfortunately. If Stoops stays at OU, I think we are going to get a sucky coach! I will be pissed!

I'm not believing a damn thing until I hear it from Hackett or Harbaugh. Period. Everyone knows "something" which to me means nobody knows anything. The only person who knows is Harbaugh, and he sure as shit ain't talking. I'm just going to sit back and watch it play out. I suggest that everyone else do the same. Enjoy your Sunday.

I don't want to appear to have my maize & blue tinted glasses on, but there's been enough information out saying he is interested (including quotes from our Dear Leader) that I have to assume this guy just has uninformed sources

I don't think that article is sourced by anyone, and the author didnt do any research. He mentioned something about Ross we know untrue at this point: "Despite the Dolphins’ 7-5 record, team owner Steve Ross remains one of Harbaugh’s biggest supporters. Ross tried to hire him in the past, he is desperate for a face-of-the-franchise to attract fan support, and he could end up being Davis’s primary competition for Harbaugh. Davis’s desire for Harbaugh cannot be understated, sources said, with him, too, in a stadium quandary and desperate for a coach he can sell and try to add value to his franchise as he seeks a move to Los Angeles." Unless he is referring to Ross influence at M.

are just showing how "journalists" are whores for getting clicks. He may not be interested in coming back, but I find it really tough to believe if that was an absolute truth, he would have made that clear to Michigan, and this would be widely known and accepted. If JH loves Michigan like it seems, why the hell would he drag this on at the detriment to the coaching search, and put the fans through this pins and needles stuff. So, that some dude's sources say he's not interested becomes the headline, insinuating some announcement has been made, is bullshit. Jason La Confora would have totally lost any credibility with me..IF I actually knew who he was.

Harbaugh is going to coach Michigan next year, and when he does I am going to write a letter to each member of the media that claimed that no one leaves the NFL for college to tell them neener neener neener.
