Cazzie Russell coaching in Crisler tonight

Submitted by WhoopinStick on

Cazzie Russell is an assistant coach for Armstrong State - the team that Michigan plays tonight in an exhibition game in "The House that Cazzie Built".  Great story in MLive about Cazzie's road back to Crisler and the reaction of his players when they learn who their coach really is.

Michigan  playing Princeton in the Final Four semi in 1965.  Do you know who's guarding Cazzie in that pic?

None other than future NBA Hall of Famer and US Senator Bill Bradley

I remember a game at Yost where my dad and I got standing room only tickets.  The place was jammed every game.  I managed to move down by the court and sat on one of the end lines.  Cazzie was an absolute monster - quick, athletic, and a great shooter.

I didn't know about him coming back until I read the Quinn article this morning.  Just talked my wife into going to the game.  She's a pretty good sport.  I'm guessing tickets shouldn't be too hard to come by.

My dad had the best seat in the house to watch Cazzie: he rode the bench behind Bill Buntin when Cazzie was a sophomore and my dad was a senior. Graduated and moved on afterwards, missing out on the Final Four teams, but still raves about Russell as the best player he ever shared the (practice) court with.

when Cazzie played, and yeah tickets were hard to get.  Loved the Yost atmosphere ... dirt floor, the court was raised 3 feet or so above the dirt.  The lighting was just on the court, so evening games had darkness everywhere except the court.  The basket stanchions had to be 20' long and were wired to the upper seating level of Yost.  Just an amazing sight for a 8 year old kid ... and the crowd was awesome !   Warm ups included a dunk line from center court and the crowd would chant 1 ... 2 ....3 counting off the dunks ... until you finally reached the guards (who were like 6'2") and couldn't dunk and the crowd would laugh and then get fired up for the opening tip.   Ahhh .. great memories !!!

I know my big brother saw Cazzie play, but considering the number of times my big sister and I saw Ailey's company perform, we might actually have seen her dance.  [EDIT: checking the dates, probably not.]  The Ailey Company was as legendary to her as Cazzie was to the big bro.
