Calipari on Harbaugh's podcast

Submitted by DanRareEgg on

I'm listening to the latest episode of Harbaugh's podcast, which I've greatly enjoyed so far. This week, though, they've got Calipari as a guest and it was too much for me. His self-promotion is so constant I wouldn't be surprised if he just does it unconsciously at this point. He did everything but plug his website. He always has underlying themes of compassion and humility, but he's always talking about how great he and his program are it's hard to take him as genuine.

Did anybody get a different impression?

That's just who Calipari is at this point. They had to cut him off at the NBA draft because his promo went so long. He's a sleazy salesman type of dude but he has the results to back it up.

I thought maybe he would be less forcefully on brand since it wasn't a traditional media appearance. I was wrong.

I don't think he's necessarily a bad guy (the NCAA is worse than he is, at least), but the image of piety he projects doesn't sit well with me.

I thought the same thing when I saw this thread, but after listening that was exceptionally cringeworthy. Jim and JT were struggling to be gracious hosts at times. JT tried to cut him off once or twice and Jim took a long time to muster a response to Calipari's story about humiliating his players in film study to humor him.

I would love to have a beer or two with Coach Cal. He definitely has some stories. He used a lot of cliches on the podcast, but he is a character. I do not hate him as others do. Even though he buys prepaid Visa cards for his recruits and players, characters like Cal in college sports are great.

Harbaugh was on Calipari's podcast a while ago.  It was a very good listen and Jim talked about his family's admiration for Calipari as Calipari and Crean are very good friends.  Both coaches are seriously driven, competitive as hell and innovative, out-of-box thinkers.  I enjoyed listening to both podcasts.

I haven't listened, but why wouldn't he talk about himself? As a guest on a show, what else is he going to talk about? Guests don't go on Conan and talk about the show, they talk about what's going on in their lives. I understand this is a different format to that, but they had him on to hear what he's got to say. Harbaugh goes on Rich Eisen and talks about himself and Michigan football, not Rich.

But his program isn't under an FBI investigation and he encourages his players to leave after a year ... the more people he sends to the NBA the more top prospects he gets. Is he a self deprecating narcissist? Absolutely, but I'm sure he will also be the first to admit it. There are worse evils in sports and in life

But, he's still a really good basketball coach.  McDonalds players can make a coach look good.  Year after year he is fielding freshman teams.  His in game adjustments are usually very good and his teams always peak around tournament time.

If he were clean he would still be one of the top coaches but took shortcuts to get where he is.  I also don't think they (Kentucky) are dirty anymore because they don't have to be.  Now he can sell one-and-done lottery tickets.

I never understand the Calipari hate here. Are they the same folks who pissed on Harbaugh before he came here? Fact is Calipari crushes it, and to me is Harbaghs equivalent in basketball.

He is an annoying narccisist sometimes, but I don't take the time to hate the guy. I gotta use my hate more intelligently toward things that deserve it. Like ohio state.

I'll be excited as always to listen to this podcast. I'm sure JackTalk can save the episode when it has it's trouble spots.
