The new QB controversy: Cade vs. Shea at golf?
September 8th, 2022 at 1:37 PM ^
Shea regressed after spending all off season playing golf...
Cade also seemed like he was really into golf this past off season and might have regressed...
Is golf the ultimate culprit for all the pain and sorrow Michigan Football has faced? Any idea if Brady Hoke or Rich Rod were also into golf?
September 8th, 2022 at 1:47 PM ^
The entire OLines during those two tenures must have been awesome at golf.

Hoke was fantastic at Golden Tee

Rumor has it he was willing to walk across the country to play golden tee at his favorite bar

Tin Cup: Cade is David Simms, JJ is Roy McAvoy

Do not want to hear anything about a Michigan QB and Golf.
September 8th, 2022 at 7:11 PM ^
Or any aspect of Michigan football and golf.
September 8th, 2022 at 1:25 PM ^
Those look sick!! Think I just found my new dream driver.
September 8th, 2022 at 4:15 PM ^
This weekend, Cade will be giving the linemen high-fives on the sideline after Michigan scores a touchdown. JJ will be in that crowd returning from the field.
September 8th, 2022 at 1:27 PM ^
While this is cool, doesn't Cade have a NIL deal with Ping? I always wonder about these posts where players give gift cards and items to the team and it just reads as an ad for the item in my opinion.
September 8th, 2022 at 1:32 PM ^
Doubt the linemen care who's paying for it...
Don't hate the player, hate the game. Cade seems to be pulling strings he's got for the guys that protect him, pretty neat.
September 8th, 2022 at 3:36 PM ^
Fair enough. May not be his fault, but the timing of this one feels a little wonky.
September 8th, 2022 at 1:47 PM ^
I think the idea of NIL and maybe marketing/promotion in general might be lost on you.
PING is a golf brand who make golf products. Their main marketing objective (of which NIL would exist in their budget) is to raise awareness for their brand, so that the general public buy more of their products.
PING signs an NIL deal with a D1 QB at a major program. They give him money and product, in exchange for him representing their brand (maybe make an appearance or two for them) in general promote PING products.
Cade goes to his new brand buddies and says I'd like to give my line new clubs. Does the brand say, "sure Cade, here's an invoice let us know where you'd like they shipped." Or do they say "this one is on us" with the idea that when the story "Cade gives his Linemen new PINGS" hits the wires it's basically "free" advertisement in exchange for product Jumping to the end, its the latter. It's called Ad Value Equivalency and they're racking up a ton of it right now. In fact, in this thread alone someone saying "those are my dream clubs" is basically the win.
Nobody thinks that Cade went into his pocket to buy these clubs. The linemen don't. This is how Cade used his Name, Image and/or Likeness to profit and reward his teammates in the process. It's pretty much a win for everyone. The reason this "reads as an ad" is because that is exactly what it is. NIL is advertising and promotion, not austerity.

Seems like this is a lecture from a B school undergrad about the bleeding obvious. A little surprised that 30 people liked it. Seemed like the OP understood perfectly? What am I missing?
I'd say the issue here is a credulous news media, maybe on a slow day, pretending that this is somehow interesting or important. And Cade possibly doing himself a disservice, offering gifts to the O-line in the midst of an on-field battle to lead them. Again, could be he gave them the drivers weeks ago and it's just coming out now.
Not criticizing the gift-giving, the arrangement, anything. Just seem like. . . of course that's how it works? I've got a house full of books and CDs from working in publishing and music, and am not complaining.
September 8th, 2022 at 5:06 PM ^
How is he doing himself a disservice? Especially when QBs routinely buy gifts for their OL, and Cade did the same thing last year, when he took the entire line out for a steak dinner courtesy of his Chop House NIL deal?

One ping only...

Title should be "PING pays Cade to give golf clubs to his OL"
September 8th, 2022 at 2:08 PM ^
Well last year he took them all out to The Chop House and then bought them customized Carhartt jackets so it's not like he suddenly became generous.
September 8th, 2022 at 2:55 PM ^
Dude, someone is paying for everything. Scholarship is paid with tax payer dollars/donors etc.. Pocket money is paid by parents/student loan. What is the big deal if Ping pays for it. Why that needs to be included?
We are not IRS. We don't care if it own money earned by working in a restaurant.
September 8th, 2022 at 1:34 PM ^
who cares what the behind the scenes deal was here, these are sweet!
I doubt the Olinemen cared when Cade 'gifted' them free Carhartt jackets last year.
September 8th, 2022 at 2:03 PM ^
Seriously. Like, I'll take a free new driver! Please and thank you!
September 8th, 2022 at 1:36 PM ^
JJ needs to get them some irons and Orji the putter.
September 8th, 2022 at 1:36 PM ^
Those are some pretty sweet looking drivers. I would like to take one off the tee with one and then spend a minute looking for my drive 2 holes over because of my immaculate slice.
September 8th, 2022 at 2:04 PM ^
Are you me? Lol
September 8th, 2022 at 2:31 PM ^
Does your slice also look likes it's going so far right that it might just start coming back towards you?
September 8th, 2022 at 3:04 PM ^
These drivers have a movable weight that can help with that! I just got the low spin version after doing a Club Champion fitting, it's a nice series of drivers.
September 8th, 2022 at 1:41 PM ^
Were they backup drivers, just in case their primary option is all sizzle and no steak?
WE ARE JOKING.
September 8th, 2022 at 1:43 PM ^
I could reach all the trees in the forest with one of those! I might even get a birdie if one is sitting on a branch. Eagles are even possible here in the Pacific Northwest.

September 8th, 2022 at 2:09 PM ^
Offensive line would prefer drives in game.
September 8th, 2022 at 2:09 PM ^
I would still have a wicked slice with those
September 8th, 2022 at 2:16 PM ^
Did he get the Mineral King discount?
September 8th, 2022 at 2:28 PM ^
What is it with underperforming UM quarterbacks and golf?
And if you’re handing out custom drivers, go TSR or go home!
September 8th, 2022 at 2:28 PM ^
Any chance this is part of a wicked strategy to get the OL to not block for JJ if the change is made? Something like, "remember that Ping driver? Yeah, JJ goes down on the 3rd snap of the second series. Pass the word..."

The PXG reply to this tweet is hilarious
September 8th, 2022 at 3:00 PM ^
They instantly replied to my tweet...hope it leads to something.
Someone recently told me the founder of PXG went to CMU and is bankrolling their new golf team. Flies them to events in a private jet. No idea if it's true, but good for CMU if it is.
September 8th, 2022 at 3:40 PM ^
His wife went to CMU, actually, though he did not
September 8th, 2022 at 2:50 PM ^
Very generous dude. Good for him. Wonder who on the OL can hit the longest drive ?

What did JJ get them?
