Burke Finishes Third, Hardaway Fifth in NBA ROY Voting

Submitted by nmumike on

Carter-Williams received 104 out of 120 first place votes to win, with Oladipo finishing second.

Carter-Williams was only the third player since 1950-51 to lead all rookies in scoring (16.7), rebounding (6.3) and assists (6.2). Oscar Robertson (1960-61) and Alvan Adams (1975-76) were the others, Burke finished with a stat line of: 12.8 points and 5.7 assists per game.

My assumption was that at some point Carter-Williams broke his wrist, and it healed in such a way as to make his shooting, passing, and some how rebounding amazing. I learned that this can be done as a child in one of the better sports movies of my youth (though no where near The Sandlot).

Nice to see that the first post was about KCP...

Congrats to both players.  I think Hardaway is poised to have an even better 2nd year if the Knicks figure their stuff out; Burke will undoubtedly benefit from an improving Utah team, especially with another high draft pick on the way.

It's fine.  I'm just punchy after seeing KCP dragged up every time Burke did anything this year.  I thought the Pistons were a trainwreck all year, but KCP showed flashes of being a solid player and, honestly, I'm not super-high on Burke's long-term career in the NBA simply because some of his issues (mediocre shooting, limited defensive ability, size) are likely going linger (though I do think his shooting should take a jump up with better teammates) and could hurt his chances to see the court and showcase what he's good at (creating shots for himself and others, deceptively good mid-range game, etc.).

Love our guys but this might be looked at in 20 years as one of the weakest NBA classes ever if Carter-Williams is the shining star.

What a weird year. Load ipod and Burke were the only top 10 picks to get any votes, and when you add MCW it makes 3 of the top 14 players selected that got even a single vote. What a crappy draft.

I was looking more at the rookie class and how bad they were. 8.8 ppg was good for 5th best among rookies, and that came from McLemore who did it while shooting less than 38% from the field. Your #1 overall pick? 4.2 ppg on .356 shooting and 30 games missed.

How's that Cody Zeller pick looking? lol. Unfortunately, I think McGary will struggle just like Zeller. Undersized bigs that play below the rim don't do well in the league -- especially guys that don't have a mid-range or 3pt threat. I love Mitch, but I expect him to be overseas fairly soon.

Zeller measured out at over 7' in shoes (6'10.5" w/out) and had the 7th best Max Vert. among PFs in last year's class.  Not to mention that Zeller finished the season pretty well in the last two months and ended up with a 13.5 PER.  Not a star by any means, but it's not like he can already be written off.

He measures out well, but he doesn't play like an athletic 7 footer. Bad players can accumulate points/mins when they play on the Bobcats. But my larger point was that Mitch isn't 7 foot nor can he jump like Zeller. Zeller is also a much better FT shooter. I think McGary has a pretty big mountain to climb to make it in the league. Just my opinion. I'll always love the dude.

No offense, MGoChippewa, but that "height in shoes" measurement is evidence of great stupidity in basketball, if not the USA. Are people too $%^#ing dumb to add 1.5" (or whatever the standard shoe adds) to the base height?

This year's rookie class was arguably the worst in history.  Only 10 rookies even averaged 20 minutes per game in the regular season, and of those who did, only MCW and Kelly Olynyk had a PER over 15 (a 15 PER is average).  MCW had horrible shooting efficiency numbers but still was the clear winner, which says a lot.

I said it before and I'll say it again.  My Cleveland Cavs made argueably the worst first pick in the history of the NBA draft.  Behold - the greatness that is one Mr Anthony Bennett

PPG:      4.2

Games: 52

FG%:     35%

Even in a horrible draft the Cavs found a way to pick the worst player available.

The 3rd and 5th highest rated rookies.  This is by far the best result of any team feeding the NBA last year.  Better than KY, Syracurse, Duke, MSU, IU, etc, etc, etc.

And, oh, what's that?  May happen again for 2014-15?  You are correct sir!

Yes, take notice recruits.  You want to get to the NBA and actually do well?  You know where to go!
