Brian I am Ready to Stream MGoBlog

Submitted by HAIL 2 VICTORS on September 1st, 2023 at 11:44 AM

Brian,

Trying to read the posts on MgoBlog with the current Ad's blocking the entire screen is too much.  I would rather pay a monthly fee then endure navigating around the screen blocking full page advertising.

I surrender - that breakfast I bought you and your wife for 15 years of free content is not enough.

Why would you both A.) Pay a monthly fee; and B.) Then endure navigating around the screen blocking full page advertising?

Also, which Ad's (Warde?) are blocking the entire screen?  Is that a fat joke?

I asked about this in the Mod Sticky and the only solution appears to be hitting refresh when it happens. And it happens a lot. I even had it happen with a Honda ad a couple of times and other times the ad at the bottom of the page just expands to be half the screen.

I know they're a sponsor and maybe this isn't their issue, but HUEL not being able to fix this over the last 5 years is not a ringing endorsement. Unless this is a monetary choice by Mgo to not fix the Google Ad issues because of cost. I know Seth talked about it once before and how glitchy it's been with Google Ads, but there is no other site I go to that has this funky ad layout and this many ad issues.

I usually scroll by, but if there are multiple within a 1-2 simple sentence/statement, I can be that guy...

Perhaps I'm just ornery that it's the height of tax season, and taking out my frustrations of working 60+ hour weeks/25+ hours this holiday weekend by being the grammar police.  There should be better ways of decompressing.

I think I'm going to take a lunch break for once and go buy some ribeyes, on sale at Kroger. That on the grill, along with a 6-pack and pulling for the Chips against MeLLLLLLL-O-Rail should get me in better spirits tonight.  /end self-reflection

I use uBlock and the ads are gone, but I also partake in a monthly beveled guilt so I feel less-bad about it all.

The ads on the site are pretty intrusive but also...that's sort of the deal with free content.  I'm all for a Patreon-esque system where you can pay to support the site and not see ads but not seeing most ads isn't particularly tough if you dig around a bit.

I hate ads as much as Darker Blue hates Spectrum and Disney. On iPhone (perhaps Android too) - NextDNS. Never see ads on anything. On the computer, Chrome with AdBlock. I can choose which sites to allow ads on AdBlock, but this site's ads are an issue.

Loading the site on my chrome IOS browser somehow takes forever now.  Safari is much faster.  The app doesn't function the way I'd like it to.  Would GLADLY pay for an app that just lets me navigate the board more easily and quickly.  I visit this site more than anything else and the slowdowns are causing me to not review as much.

i was astounded by the ad blocking the entire page, then going away, then coming back like 20 seconds later.  in 50 years our eye balls are going to be unusable for 30 seconds when the corporations beam the commercial directly into our retinas.

Uhhh my dude, I don't think you really get what "streaming" means....

also (until a premium ad-free version of mgoblog exists), those of you using ad blockers on this site are cutting off Brian and co.'s primary stream of revenue, so if you really appreciate what they provide for free, maybe consider allowing this site as an exception to your ad blocker, or contribute another way if/how your means allow...

There are some things we have to deal with in order to get free content and allow the site owners/operators to make it worth while to put out free content.

I know it is frustrating

Ugh, this is what's annoying.  Every time someone makes some meta comments about the site, there inevitably is someone else who chides them for demanding all the bells and whistles, for free.

That's not what people are asking for.

Many of us would gladly pay a subscription fee if it meant a higher-performing site.  There have also been multiple suggestions for Kickstarters to help fund site upgrades.  We're not asking for MGoBlog to lose money.  We want the site to live long and prosper.  We'd just like it to not be overwhelmed by ads and have a message board from 2008.

This^^^.  I have the Chrome extension, but I shut it off because I do not want to deprive the blog of revenue.  I believe in paying for good content with $$$ rather than viewing ads for Russian brides (yes, I know those are long gone).

I asked Seth about a subscription option several months (years?) ago and he said "we're working on it."

Please please please let me pay a subscription rather than endure these ads!
