"We feel like our pass rush will be strong enough to consistently harass Haskins. And even if we don't hit home, Kinnel should be able to lock down his side of the field against OSU."

“I don’t really like to compare coaching basketball to coaching football. I feel like comparing things always leads to something getting diminished. I know we are both just happy to be here. Happy to work.  Trying to better today than we were yesterday... better tomorrow than we are today.

He also inherited two consecutive top 10 classes in transition from underclassmen to upperclassmen.  Classes that made up the most successful draft class of all time at Michigan.  He took over for a bad coaching staff but the cupboard was far for bare.

I think that 6-8 record is misleading though.  Pretty sure some of his wins came against teams that were actually good but the pollsters didn't know it (Colorado, PSU 2016, Northwestern 2018) and pretty sure the vast majority of the losses are to not just ranked but top ten teams.

No need to make make comparisons though.  They're both great coaches and will continue to do even better.

"I average a banner a year for 7 years, but the football coach who is still working on his first is getting all the coverage with a gorgeous woman right behind me DURING MY TEAM'S FINAL HOME GAME OF A 17-1 HOME EFFORT.  (puts his hands on his head) What was I thinking putting all of my glorious and talented eggs into the basket of a football school?"

Beilein is a great coach because he has that ridiculous competitive edge, but he's still, you know, a human. Wanting your team to play hard up 22 with an entire half to play is reasonable and shows his focus. But when he was up thirty with a minute to go, he's talking to Harbaugh and Glick and laughing. And I've had enough interactions with Coach B to know he's a genuinely thoughtful, down to earth person.

Contrast that with guys like Dantonionionio, Saban, and Urbz who positively look like coaching is an eternal punishment for them and that there's nothing on earth worse than what they're doing right now. Harbaugh has done a better job balancing work with pleasure but even he has some room to grow

There was definitely a fair amount irony in my comment; I just thought my first sentence sounded funny.

It's obviously absurd to use "is nice" and "has a soul" as criteria for a coaching position. It's also kind of absurd how comfortable people are villainizing coaches of other schools and acting as if they're totally diabolical. It just seems silly this idea that our coaches are humanitarians and other teams' coaches (particularly of highly successful teams and/or teams that often beat us) are nihilistic sociopaths.

Winning is important and coaches are paid to win games.  But it isn't everything.  (Just like making money isn't everything.) It's one reason I admire John Beilein so much.  He wins A LOT.  But he is also a quality human being who has figured out that you don't have to sell your soul to win.  Lots of coaches never learn that.
