Beilein rants about ESPN start time

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

I love this guy. We all do. Who doesn't? How can you not?

John Beilein just ranted about ESPN airing the game even later than 10 p.m. Spike Albrecht has a nine a.m. class tomorrow.

@BFQuinn: Beilein blasting ESPN for tonight's tip time being moved 10 minutes.” Haha Classic Beilein. Gotta love him!!

Beilein's remarks on ESPN delayed start time weren't a response to a question; he just went freestyle.

When you are getting back at 4:30 and you have a 9AM class, 15 minutes matters.

You are talking about being able to get maybe 3 hours of sleep.  3 hours 15 minutes of sleep is gonna be better than 3 hours.  Is it significant?  No but when you are talking about barely getting enough sleep to function, an extra 15-30 mniutes can make a difference.

I'm going to trust Beilein that Spike actually had the class this morning.  If it was cancelled, he wouldn't have been railing about it.

A game on Tuesday night before Thanksgiving makes more sense than Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend.

It was a sad day when the B1G adjusted their football schedules so that their season ended Thanksgiving weekend instead of the weekend before.  Players, coaches, and staff had to stay on campus Thanksgiving week instead of being able to take the week off and be with family.  Students had to come back to campus on Saturday if they wanted to attend the game.

All this so that the television networks would have programming for the Thanksgiving weekend.  It shows you who's in charge of our lives now-a-days.

They earn a billion just from the added rights CBS bought to air those games that the NFL Network withheld and tried to build an audience for on its own dime, then sold off half the season with broadcasting arrangements through CBS for the entire season.

There isn't a single frame of NFL action that isn't monetized in some fashion and isn't copyrighted.

Personally loved it on the west coast. I didn't have to tell everyone I was in the cocoon. But also support JB rant about affecting academics. That's what separates us from majority.

agree, i also enjoyed the start time b/c i was watching on the west coast. but that doesn't mean i agree with the late start time from coach b's perspective, let alone the 10-15 delay to watch two mac football teams play each other on a random tuesday night

ahh just figured out the answer to my own question....

Spike's probably finishing his UG degree early so he can weigh his pro options at the end of the season

I'm totally missing something here. Are they flying back to A2 or driving? If they flew back last nigh or even early in am this morning what difference does any of this have to spike getting to class? Did this delay their chartered flight so that Spike couldn't get to sleep on the plane 15 minutes earlier?

You are missing the point. He said that 10 was already too that and to delay it even more compounded the issue. Then he said that no game should start after 9pm on the east coast. He then tweeted that they got to Ypsilanti at 4:22 this morning. And it would be another 30 to get the students back to the dorm room. So his point is with travel of the team you have to consider what time you start a Tuesday night College game.

And nobody has answered it by the way. Do they fly back to A2 that night or in the morning? I was just curious. I suppose if they fly a charter back that night then yes, they're going to get in at 2 or 3 am and that's ridiculous. But as someone else stated, it seems like this probably happens all the time for men's basketball players (or other sports for that matter) on these travel schedules and professors usually accommodate.

Won't there be occasional BTN games that start at 9 that wil be in Nebraska or Rutgers and require the same type of late flight to get a kid back for a 9:00?
