It's not outlandish, and I'm sure it would only be until they had another scholarship available.  The best players are going to play, whether they are on scholarship or are a "walk on".  I guess some think there is a stigma of being labeled a "walk on".  Bottom line is by going the "walk on" route, he would be helping the team and his pops.  Most kids need the scholarship money, but he does not.

Why should Jace or Jett have to "help the team" by being a walk-on and no one else should? If they have earned the right to be scholarship players, then they can and should be.

The best players are going to play, but the best players are also scholarship-players.

Whether or not the Howard boys need the scholarship money or not doesnt matter. That's not how you run a D1 program. D1 bball and football scholarships are not need-based, they are skill-based. And what if Juwan doesn't pay for everything for them? What if he had them earn their own scholarships or pay their own way instead of expecting help? Would that then all of the sudden mean Jett can get a scholarship according to you because he would "need it?"

We have and have had numerous sons of NFL players in the program that presumably wouldn't "need" the scholarship. Or sons of doctors. Why did no one ever get up in arms and say that DPJ or Dylan McCaffery should walk-on? Should Aidan Hutchinson give up his scholarship so someone else who needs it can have it?

It's outlandish because its only being said about Jace and Jett, because their dad is the coach and is rich.

No one here would suggest another 4/5 star player walk-on/not be on scholarship to "help the program." Both of those players have earned the right to be scholarship players because of their hard work, and shouldnt be expected to do something different because of who their father is. And yes, JH and his family have money and could pay for their boys to attend UM, but they shouldnt be expected to do so just because of their status.

I agree that both have worked and earned a scholarship.  You are right that this is only because their dad is the coach and rich, but I don't know of any other situations similar to this where the dad has control over the scholarship.  The only reason I asked this question was because it was an option for Jace during his recruitment and was discussed here and Sam discussed it on WTKA of the possibility for him to be a walk on.  So don't get all ruffled because I asked if it could also be in play for Jett.  I hope we can give all 3 of them scholarships, but we were discussing 3 or 4 players and only 2 remaining scholarships for this class based on the assumed attrition after this season.

I highly doubt they get Traore then if they're willing to accept Glenn's commitment. Traore doesn't seem like he's in any rush, but maybe this visit blows him away.

They are recruiting for 4 spots, but I think there’s a chance they have as many as 6 open. So I look at it as Traore vs future transfer to be named later. If you get Traore in the spring then cool, if not Juwan will look to add from the portal. This is based on Dickinson, Jones, Diabate, and Houston declaring, then Johns and Nunez no longer counting against the limit for their covid year, then one random transfer out. So actually 5 of those 7 things happening isn’t crazy.

Mentioned this in the other thread, but I think you take Traore regardless, even if it means over signing at this stage of things.

As for GG, he's a good player who has been a little injured, but hasn't really done a lot this summer iirc...i think his decision will hinge on Smith.

I don't see us pushing Traore for a commitment but we could do so for Smith. If Traore is stretching things out to the spring, we could use our 4th scholarship now on Glenn or Smith, and then a 5th one on Traore or hold it for a transfer.

Potential scholarships freeing (Eli Brooks doesn't count as we're using his Covid year to exceed the standard roster limit):

  1. Brandon Johns graduation
  2. Adrian Nunez graduation
  3. Hunter Dickinson to NBA
  4. DeVante' Jones to NBA
  5. Caleb Houstan to NBA

Technically, any of these players could come back (and we could have someone else decide to transfer or have Diabate or someone else blow up into an NBA exit), but this seems like the most likely scenario as of now.

Diabate isn't currently projected on any major NBA mock draft boards, and is generally regarded as a 2+ and done prospect by the NBA. The general feeling is he needs to show production on the court first, but he won't necessarily have much opportunity to do so this year. It seems as if it's a matter of when not if, so I see your point, but he is regarded as a little further away as a prospect compared to the other 3. But, it is very possible he proves them wrong fairly quickly, as he certainly has the ability.

Traore is a take no matter what.  Not sure why we need Smith, if he is as described (undersized, highly skilled, not very athletic...) because we already have a similar but superior option in house--Tschetter is better!  Fine with taking Glenn as a program guy with upside, so long as the door stays open for Traore.

Well, I guess we scared Smith off, ha ha.  Tschetter was a scoring machine in high school.  Okay, not the highest level of competition.  But then, look at his tape.  Great footwork, smooth and accurate jump shot, high motor.  Can score with ease down low or from deep.  Not ideal size for a pro prospect but...big enough, and looks like the kind of guy who could be a beast in college.

I hope we could take two more players as well as Jett.  There could be room for both Glenn/Smith and Traore with likely attrition.

I certainly hope we don't lose out on Traore.  He seems to be a clearly elite level talent.

Since it seems like its for some reason coming making the rounds again...

Jett is not coming as a walk-on.

Just because his dad is rich and can "afford it" does not mean a Top-40 player is walking-on.

As of 11am this morning, Colin Smith is still slated to visit Ann Arbor this Friday along with his parents.

UPDATE - I have confirmed that Smith cancelled the visit. Looks like Gregg Glenn to Michigan in a few weeks.

Assuming Jett comes on board, I just see this as a Glenn/Smith battle for a spot. I think Traore is a take later irregardless. If he doesn’t come on board you can always see if Johns wants another year and that would leave him, Reed, Diabate, Williams and Tschetter as people down low. As someone said below, if Diabate leaves you can still plug in Traore.

UPDATE - I have confirmed that Colin Smith cancelled his visit. All things are pointing toward a Gregg Glenn to Michigan announcement, and perhaps a joint announcement with Jett Howard.

I personally liked Glenn's film.

He looks like a 3 or 4 year player, but a contributor that we need.

If his career is Brandon Johns, I see no problem with that whatsoever.
