2016 RB Commit Matt Falcon Likely Out For Season
FOOTBALL: Southfield running back and Michigan commit Matt Falcon is likely out for the season with a knee injury.

My timeline is not off; if it was my call id take him becuase of his potential and becuase Michigan high school coaches will like that. Yeah he takes up 1 spot this season, but if he never recovers you medical him and he gets free school and UofM finds a replacement for that scholarship. The only thing we would be risking by taking him is wasting 1 spot this year, but the risk is small since we get that spot back if things don't work out.

by a 30-second ad I couldn't get rid of, I was writing that honoring the offer is the kind of "character thing" we associate with the ideal of a "Michigan Man (Woman)" isn't it?

They should definitely honor the scholorship but he may now be a grayshirt candidate because he probably not be ready for next season

Aside from the injuries this kid will have played 1/2 of a season in the past 3 years when he arrives here. That is very tough. Tough enough to make the jump from HS to college but he will be basically going from 9th grade to college with 1/2 year experience in between.

Sounds like Daelin Hayes. I think he's only played 4 snaps in the last two years of high school. I don't know what happened his freshman season.

You say the same about Austin Hatch?
August 23rd, 2015 at 8:35 PM ^
That's a rare and highly unusual thing, and he ultimately lost his scholarship, didn't he? Not saying what the "right thing" is here, but these athletic scholarships are specifically designed for people to actually play a sport at a high level. If due to injury he simply cannot do that long before he gets to campus, is there not some reasonable argument to be made that he should not receive a scholarship???

A plane crash is not an ACL injury. You can pretty easily recover for an ACL injury these days.
Hatch lost motor skills and still made it to Michigan...an ACL shouldn't keep Falcon out. It's not like he won't be able to walk again.
If he lost his damn leg...yea, we should probably figure something out because his career is over. A torn ACL is not a career ending injury.
Should we just kick Drake Johnson off the team too? He's had the same injury over and over just like Falcon.
If he doesn't want to play or if he's told he shouldn't play anymore, that's one thing...if it's just bad luck (for him) and we've got an injury prone RB - that's another.
And like I said...if it's this time next year, you can always put him on a medical scholarship like we just did Chris Fox.

I used one exclamation point and you tell me to calm down. I thought my post was more than reasonable...seems like you get emotional just because I disagree with you.
And like I said, there were still a finite number of scholarships for Austin Hatch. And he still got one.
We all knew he was never going to play significantly, but he came to Michigan and got to the point where they could put him on medical. And now he's still part of the team.
Falcon has a torn ACL - it's not the end of the world. It's not like he cannot perform the duties agreed upon in a NLI. It's a common knee injury.

to Michigan. But I suffer some sort of injury that causes my HS grades to slip significantly. Should the school still give me the academic scholarship? Even though I won't be able to perform at the level that is expected of someone who receives an academic full ride?
If there were an unlimited number of scholarships available this would be a no-brainer. But what happens when more than one kid in a recruiting class misses his senior year of HS with injuries? What if it's 4 or 5 kids? Do we give them all scholarships, and hobble the team in the process, just to be good guys?
Do we want to win National Championships? To do that we need top recruiting classes full of healthy players that are able to stay healthy.
/apologies for excessive use of question marks.
August 25th, 2015 at 11:25 PM ^
And ACL as a 17 year old doesn't mean you can't perform at the level of someone expected of a D1 scholarship at Michigan. 3 ACL's doesn't either.
You're assuming.
Your analogy was also awful.
Why am I even responding to this? Wow. That was just , well, bad.

of not knowing what the fuck you're talking about.
(edit: like claiming Grant Perry will not get any run this year...and then doubling down on that prediction)
You literally misinterpreted everything I said...meanwhile, the person I responded to...responded with a post that actually followed our conversation.
August 24th, 2015 at 6:07 PM ^
Hahaha, you're the guy who said there is no shot Grant Perry plays this year...and then reiterated it when you were given the chance!
THAT'S WHY YOU'RE SO UPSET WITH ME.
I remember now, I almost forgot you sly devil, you...sneaky sneaky.
Trying to throw shade on me cause I called you out on your dumbass statement that you won't back down from. I bet you saw all those posts from the scrimmage about him starting and said "oh fucking shit" or something of the sort.
Haha - I should've never taken you seriously the first time and responded...now I've done it TWICE! oops.

Hatch did not lose his scholarship. He got a medical scholarship which just prevents him from playing in a game.
August 24th, 2015 at 5:36 AM ^
But more importantly in regards to what's in the interest of our teams' performances, Hatch doesn't count against our scholarship limit. I'm 99% sure about that anyway. If we're going to give Falcon a medical scholarship, sure. But then he'd never play again.
I have mixed feelings. I actually don't think it'd be such an immoral thing for Michigan to revoke Falcon's offer, but it also doesn't sit totally fine with me.
August 24th, 2015 at 9:41 AM ^
recruiting class that could have gone to someone else. Worst case scenario for Falcon is the same, but his chances of contributing are significantly greater.
August 24th, 2015 at 10:15 AM ^
We did not kick him to the curb...he still enrolled at Michigan with a spot that could've gone to another student athlete.
And in hindsight, a spot that we probably needed with the injuries to LeVert and Walton.
August 24th, 2015 at 10:16 AM ^
Were you reponding to me? I can't tell with all of the responses in this chain.

No, it's not his fault. It's not Harbaugh's fault either. This is a tough situation any way you slice it, but unless Harbaugh wants to incite the wrath of every high school coach in the state, he has to honor the scholarship. Falcon will be put on medical asap, and ultimately, it won't really affect our scholarship numbers.

I think the issue is how will UM determine if he's likely to play again? And can they do so by LOI signing day? Pulling the schollie w/o a professional evaluation would send the wrong message IMO. OTOH, if the professionals evaluate the knee and think its likely shot then it makes no sense to have him on an athletic scholarship.

Same knee?
August 23rd, 2015 at 8:32 PM ^
Of course no kid ever wants to think about that decision and I wouldn't blame him, but if he's facing the possibility of not being able to walk properly or have significant damage to his leg by the time he's 30, he may have to think about calling it quits.

Actually, he doesn't "have" to think of anything, despite your posts to the contrary. Just wish the kid the best and give him the respect and equality of any other human being who will make his life's choices without you, me or anyone else needing to tell him what he has to do or think.

I can't count all the ACL injuries we've had in the past 4 years. This is getting ridiculous.
August 23rd, 2015 at 8:43 PM ^
Hoping for a speedy recovery. Keep your head up, kid! Hit the books and heal up. Study and rehab, rehab and study.

Yes, I must be drunk. That is the only explanation for why I believe a high school running back with three major knee injuries in two years might not be successful at Michigan.

mgofish spoke to Falcon tonight....Falcon says that it's not as bad as people think it is....
http://mgofish.com/the-mgofish-bowl/
"UPDATE. Just spoke with Matt and he had some very encouraging news. He let me know that the injury is not as bad as everyone thinks. He's doing well, is in a great state of mind and is ready to get to work.
Now is the time to exhale, Michigan fans. Things are going to be ok."

Hit the high mark on this thread for MGoSpeculation ranging from a) giving he kid a medical after one year all the way to b) not honoring his scholarship and back to the ethical debate of those situations. Amazing.
Maybe awaiting clarification would be cool.
Also, get well soon Matt Falcon.

That was last week's rumor that was quickly deleted. Now it's he's out for the season with a knee injury, but wait it's not that bad. Who knows anymore. I just hope he's healthy for 2016.
