2016 RB Commit Matt Falcon Likely Out For Season

Submitted by winterblue75 on

FOOTBALL: Southfield running back and Michigan commit Matt Falcon is likely out for the season with a knee injury.

This is the third knee injury that will force him to miss a large chunk of his high-school career. An ACL injury sidelined him for his entire sophomore season, and he missed half of his junior season after an MCL sprain.

Does't sound good at all

My timeline is not off; if it was my call id take him becuase of his potential and becuase Michigan high school coaches will like that. Yeah he takes up 1 spot this season, but if he never recovers you medical him and he gets free school and UofM finds a replacement for that scholarship. The only thing we would be risking by taking him is wasting 1 spot this year, but the risk is small since we get that spot back if things don't work out.

Aside from the injuries this kid will have played 1/2 of a season in the past 3 years when he arrives here.  That is very tough.  Tough enough to make the jump from HS to college but he will be basically going from 9th grade to college with 1/2 year experience in between.

I'm probably going to be negged to all hell for this, but I'm not sure we should honor the scholarship if he's unable to play. Of course I hope he heals fast and can continue to play.

That's a rare and highly unusual thing, and he ultimately lost his scholarship, didn't he? Not saying what the "right thing" is here, but these athletic scholarships are specifically designed for people to actually play a sport at a high level. If due to injury he simply cannot do that long before he gets to campus, is there not some reasonable argument to be made that he should not receive a scholarship???

A plane crash is not an ACL injury. You can pretty easily recover for an ACL injury these days.

Hatch lost motor skills and still made it to Michigan...an ACL shouldn't keep Falcon out. It's not like he won't be able to walk again.

If he lost his damn leg...yea, we should probably figure something out because his career is over. A torn ACL is not a career ending injury.

Should we just kick Drake Johnson off the team too? He's had the same injury over and over just like Falcon.

If he doesn't want to play or if he's told he shouldn't play anymore, that's one thing...if it's just bad luck (for him) and we've got an injury prone RB - that's another.

And like I said...if it's this time next year, you can always put him on a medical scholarship like we just did Chris Fox.

I used one exclamation point and you tell me to calm down. I thought my post was more than reasonable...seems like you get emotional just because I disagree with you.

And like I said, there were still a finite number of scholarships for Austin Hatch. And he still got one.

We all knew he was never going to play significantly, but he came to Michigan and got to the point where they could put him on medical. And now he's still part of the team.

Falcon has a torn ACL - it's not the end of the world. It's not like he cannot perform the duties agreed upon in a NLI. It's a common knee injury.

to Michigan.  But I suffer some sort of injury that causes my HS grades to slip significantly.  Should the school still give me the academic scholarship?  Even though I won't be able to perform at the level that is expected of someone who receives an academic full ride?

If there were an unlimited number of scholarships available this would be a no-brainer.  But what happens when more than one kid in a recruiting class misses his senior year of HS with injuries?  What if it's 4 or 5 kids?  Do we give them all scholarships, and hobble the team in the process, just to be good guys?

Do we want to win National Championships?  To do that we need top recruiting classes full of healthy players that are able to stay healthy.

/apologies for excessive use of question marks.

You have a bad habit of reacting hysterically to opposing view points. The kid has had a ton of major injuries before he's even played a down of college football. He hasn't played almost any meaningful snaps in high school. It is not unreasonable for Michigan to reconsider his offer. Yes, it's terrible luck for Falcon, but life sometimes works out that way. The right thing for Michigan football and the right thing for Matt Falcon aren't necessarily the same.

of not knowing what the fuck you're talking about.

(edit: like claiming Grant Perry will not get any run this year...and then doubling down on that prediction)

You literally misinterpreted everything I said...meanwhile, the person I responded to...responded with a post that actually followed our conversation.

Hahaha, you're the guy who said there is no shot Grant Perry plays this year...and then reiterated it when you were given the chance!

THAT'S WHY YOU'RE SO UPSET WITH ME.

I remember now, I almost forgot you sly devil, you...sneaky sneaky.

Trying to throw shade on me cause I called you out on your dumbass statement that you won't back down from. I bet you saw all those posts from the scrimmage about him starting and said "oh fucking shit" or something of the sort.

Haha - I should've never taken you seriously the first time and responded...now I've done it TWICE! oops.

But more importantly in regards to what's in the interest of our teams' performances, Hatch doesn't count against our scholarship limit. I'm 99% sure about that anyway. If we're going to give Falcon a medical scholarship, sure. But then he'd never play again.

I have mixed feelings. I actually don't think it'd be such an immoral thing for Michigan to revoke Falcon's offer, but it also doesn't sit totally fine with me.

No, it's not his fault. It's not Harbaugh's fault either.  This is a tough situation any way you slice it, but unless Harbaugh wants to incite the wrath of every high school coach in the state, he has to honor the scholarship.  Falcon will be put on medical asap, and ultimately, it won't really affect our scholarship numbers.

I think the issue is how will UM determine if he's likely to play again? And can they do so by LOI signing day? Pulling the schollie w/o a professional evaluation would send the wrong message IMO. OTOH, if the professionals evaluate the knee and think its likely shot then it makes no sense to have him on an athletic scholarship.

Yeeesh....hope he has a speedy recovery, but if he's had the same or similar injury for the last three years, it might be time for him to start thinking about his future health and life after football.

Of course no kid ever wants to think about that decision and I wouldn't blame him, but if he's facing the possibility of not being able to walk properly or have significant damage to his leg by the time he's 30, he may have to think about calling it quits.

Horrible news for the kid. I wish him a speedy and full recovery. That being said, if doctors/Michigan believe he can make a full recovery and contribute to the football team they should certainly honor the scholarship offer. If they don't, they shouldn't.

mgofish spoke to Falcon tonight....Falcon says that it's not as bad as people think it is....

http://mgofish.com/the-mgofish-bowl/

"UPDATE. Just spoke with Matt and he had some very encouraging news. He let me know that the injury is not as bad as everyone thinks. He's doing well, is in a great state of mind and is ready to get to work.

Now is the time to exhale, Michigan fans. Things are going to be ok."

Can he play any other positions? Three knee injuries for a RB in high school is not promising. If he is capable of playing LB or Safety in college, I'd feel reassured.
