The Season So Far (4-1)

Submitted by Swayze Howell Sheen on
OK, so we lost, which was too bad. After all, weren't you harboring secret thoughts of some kind of fabled, seat-of-the-pants, movie-like season where we somehow won every game on the last play? I was. Seriously. Just a fantasy, yes, but one that was enjoyable to entertain. Now that's all gone, and more sanguine thought brings us to look at who we really are, and what we might become. By "we" I mean a football team that doesn't know of my existence, in case you were wondering.

I wasn't too surprised by the loss. For MSU, the game was their whole season. For us, 'twas really just another game. I don't think the young guys really hate MSU (yet). Sure, they want to beat them, but not the deep-down Dantonio-fueled bitterness that is all the rage in East Lansing these days. As Joe Gibbs once said, when asked whether he could still coach given that the game has changed so much: "Human nature hasn't changed, has it?" Motivation is a huge part in any game, so hard to judge, so telling on the field. And MSU had the motivational edge this time. They won't for a while, so they better enjoy it while they can.

Joe Gibbs: I actually looked like this once
"Hey, I'm Joe Gibbs. And fuck you."
Can you believe Tate? Can you seriously fucking believe this guy? 91 yards to go, in the rain, on a day where not much went right (and a lot went wrong), and sure enough he does it again. I could almost feel the collective sphincters of Sparties everywhere tightening throughout the drive, and the whole time I was just enjoying, actually certain he would get it done. Just give him time, and the ball, and dude steps up. He is almost a religion. Obama should ask him to find Bin Laden, he is that good.

tate, superman
"I am Tate, but I still wear socks and shoes"

Where the hell did the run game go? Lost against better big ten schemes? Or lost without Molk? Something is amiss. I think it has more to do with Molk's absence, and in many ways is telling of how close this team is to mediocrity from a personnel standpoint. A few key injuries and down we will plummet. It is OK, or even expected: this is still a rebuilding project. Let's hope the QB makes it, and some of the key defensive guys. There is a narrow margin between 8-4 and 4-8 (as we found out last year).

Narrow Margin: The Movie
"Narrow Margin: Can you believe I liked this movie?"

I really hate Dantonio. Is there a bigger douche bag in the Big Ten? The thing I don't get: do Sparty fans really like this guy? He seems like the most boring, sanctimonious, stuck up, full-of-hubris mother-scratcher* this side of the East Coast. How can anyone like him? Seriously, even his wife can barely tolerate him. I heard on good authority that his wife only has slept with him twice; there was no greater relief than hers when she found out that her pending pregnancies were females. The world could not bear another one in this man's mold.

Dantonio and wife and daughters
"Hi, I'm Becky Dantonio, and I would have aborted any sons from this man. I also burnt all my blue clothes, as did my daughters."

So here we are, 4-1. I'd say that's a record to be happy with, but more importantly, a team to be proud of. Gritty, tough, all the cliches you'd like to spout, they are here in spades. Not deep, not too talented, but those are both terms suffixed with "yet". We will get there. Rich Rod is not building a big-ten contender; he is building a national powerhouse. We are going to start rolling some teams, probably quite a few by next year. It will be fun to watch.

More importantly, we're going to start rolling Tressel. There's another guy worthy of your vitriol. I think that's going to start earlier, though - as soon as this year. On one side will be a team with few blemishes, the established powerhouse of the Big Ten. On the other side, a team with a few nicks along the way, maybe 3 losses or more, but with everything to prove. If you think that sounds like 1969, you are right. We are coming for you, Buckeye brethren, and your days at the top of the heap are done**.

Bo, duh
"Here we come, you sons of bitches."

* a term from Raising Arizona.

** except for the dung heap that is known as Ohio. You will always be king there.

Speaking of Sparties' tightening sphincters, I was watching with a mixed audience at Dockside's Bar on Torch Lake, and when Tate and the boys tied it up at the end of regulation, about half of the Spartan fans in the joint left. All the Wolverine fans stayed.

I really don't think the lack of quality play during the first 54 minutes had anything to do with not "getting" this rivalry. Sometimes its just not your day, and that was the case here with the offense. Rewatched with great pain the entire game today, and I really don't think the defense was as bad as I first remembered. A few missed tackles, but they were simply left out there too long by the O. I have good feelings for this week. They can shed the first road game experience and the added pressure of a rivalry won't be there. Iowa is ripe for an exposing.

I know Woolfolk "dinged" his shoulder.(What is that anyway? "Dinged?") Anyway, I digress. Tate, although spent at the end of regulation seems to have survived with his shoulder no worse than when the game started. That is the MOST important factor. The defense didn't give up any of those ridiculous plays for 85 yards and generally kept MSU in front of them. The 3 and outs were a killer and that early drive of MSU's for 130 yards and 12+ minutes was just crazy. Remember this is a very young team. Confidence seems to rise quickly and the thought of defeat never seems to enter their minds. They will arrive in Iowa City with one thought, "Victory". The season is young and the team will be ready. I think RR learned a lot on Saturday and it will serve he and his coaches well this week. Look out Hawkeyes, the Wolverines are coming!

I'm pretty much with you on everything you wrote, with a couple of additions. 1. Apparently, the duct tape that was holding the makeshift OL together broke for awhile yesterday; this hurt but won't be as critical against the rest of the second-rung teams as it was against MSU. 2. I still think that if a few players get healthy and the team improves as the season progresses like young teams usually do, OSU is in serious trouble in November. It's not like they are really making a case for themselves as a championship-caliber team. "Here we come, you sons of bitches," indeed. Thanks for helping to remind us that 4-1 isn't all that bad at this point.

I would have. Some great one-liners in this diary. I'll be laughing all the way to Dayton tomorrow, (I know, I know -- a loss to MSU on Saturday, Tigers have a playoff in the pinball machine called the Metrodome, and I will be in Shit Central all week. If it weren't for bad luck, I'd have none at all).

1) the photo of the Dantonio family makes me want to puke 2) it would be great to see Tate play that crazy, go for broke style for a whole game...

When Michigan scored on the tying TD drive, the stadium completely died. All the Sparties around me had visions of 2004 and 2007 simultaneously. It was wonderful. They can hate and they can rub it in (both valid things for them to do), but I like how this Michigan team can not be counted out of any game, even by those who seem to hate us most.

1. Running game. Yeah, where did it go? It's not like MSU shut down Wisky or ND's running attacks right? Like you said, if Molk is that important, it could be interesting until he gets back. Dantonio has faced RR four times now. He's got a lot more experience scheming against RR's offense then most big ten coaches. Not to mention it was probably the first time the coaches at IU, WMU and EMU had gone up against RR. Weiss went up against RR last year and UM actually moved the ball against the Irish last year. 2. I think/hope UM will be rolling the weaker teams on the schedule next year, but the defense needs a ton of help and I see a lot of shootouts next year as well.

Great post, man. I have become used to the fact that there really are no "moral victories" for us as Michigan fans (unlike ND's "win" over USC in '05). However, I do take a little comfort in watching our guys get outplayed for about 55 minutes and still almost find a way to win. It's still a loss, and to a team I can't stand. But there is no doubt that this team won't quit.

4-1 at this point in the season certainly isn't below expectations, but the last two weekends have been very troubling. Five games played, and we have been outplayed in three of them. With each passing week, each one of those four victories looks less and less impressive. Western Michigan is absolutely terrible and so is Eastern. Notre Dame is mediocre. Indiana is horrible. Michigan State outplayed us big time, and they are not a powerhouse. They are a mediocre team too and they totally dominated us for 55 minutes. Where's that offensive line depth I have been hearing about? I saw Huyge and Ferrara at RG and my impression was that both played bad. Moosman had a few bad snaps again and one of them contributed to a big sack. Right now we are a bad to mediocre team barely being kept in games by a small handful of playmakers like Tate Forcier and Donovan Warren. We have at least four upcoming games that are going to be tougher than any game we have played to date. We're probably looking at a 6-6 or 7-5 season more in line with the expectations that we had at the end of last year. It's troubling not because I was expecting big things this year, but becuase I was hoping that we are a year away, and we clearly aren't. I don't know if we are two years away or even three.

Enjoyed the post, too. I think Sparty played their best game of the season and needed all of it. We couldn't get the running game going, and chalk that up to some great play by the MSU defensive line. Some big tackles. We were unlucky to only win the turnover battle 3 to 2. There were two more MSU fumbles in the first half that could have made things much more interesting if we had found a way to cover them.

This is ahead of schedule, but not by much. I expected us to be 3-2 right now. The team has all the weaknesses that we saw before the season started, but Graham is as good as we expected, and Tate and Donovan are better. It sure beats the hell out of last year. Go Blue!

It absolutely sucks to lose to Sparty again. But we have a lot to be happy about. In 4 games at the Big House this year, I have seen more excitement than I've seen in years. I love our team, and I love where it's going. GO BLUE!

...quite what to think. Saturday was such a disappointment, notwithstanding Tate's heroics. For nearly the entire game the offense looked like an echo from last year. (I know MSU had something to do with that, but the miscues were numerous.) Iowa is really gut check time. The national spotlight brings added pressure. If we do well, it'll be good for recruiting and the entire program. If we look anything close to this past Saturday, well, it will be a loooooong night. I hope a focused, intense Michigan team shows up.
