  • Recruiting Rankings

While the pace of recruiting has slowed for Michigan, the same cannot be said for the rest of the Big Ten, as eight of the 12 conference teams (plus Notre Dame) picked up commits this week. Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Penn State continue to be in a dogfight for second place, while Indiana goes back to being Indiana after briefly remembering they have a football team. Changes since the last rankings:

6-24-12: Penn State picks up Dorain Johnson. Iowa picks up Trevon Young, Solomon Warfield, and Ike Boettger. Michigan State picks up Dylan Chmura.
6-25-12: Michigan State picks up Trey Kilgore and Jay Harris. Wisconsin picks up Sam Raridon. Northwestern picks up Kyle Queiro. Purdue picks up John Strauser.
6-26-12: Notre Dame picks up Danny Mattingly. Ohio State picks up Darron Lee. Illinois picks up Dawuane Smoot.
6-27-12: Ohio State picks up Michael Hill. Penn State picks up Zach Bradshaw. Wisconsin picks up Matt Miller.
6-28-12: Purdue picks up Brisly Estime.
6-29-12: Notre Dame picks up Michael Deeb. Penn State picks up Zayd Issah. Purdue picks up Jake Replogle.
6-30-12: Illinois picks up Joshua Jones. Northwestern picks up Warren Miles-Long.

Curtis Cothran DE NJ 3 3 3 3
Neiko Robinson S FL 3 2 3 3

The Nittany Lions make the biggest recruiting splash this week, picking up blue-chip in-state lineman Dorian Johnson, in-state LB Zayd Issah, and MD WR Zach Bradshaw. Bill O'Brien is doing a remarkable job with his first recruiting class, which sits just a notch below the classes of Michigan, Notre Dame, and Ohio State in terms of quality.

#5 Illinois - 15 Commits
Name Position State Rivals Scout 24/7 ESPN

Bryce Douglas DT IL NR NR NR NR

The Illini continue to make noise on the recruiting trail, picking up MI S Joshua Jones and OH DE Dawuane Smoot and passing Nebraska in the process. Illinois will need to add some quality to the top of the class to stay at #5, but this is still an impressive haul for Tim Beckman.

#6 Iowa - 15 Commits
Name Position State Rivals Scout 24/7 ESPN
David Kenney DE IN 4 4 3 4
Colin Goebel OL IL 3 3 3 3
Delano Hill S MI 3 3 3 3

Ike Boettger TE IA NR NR NR 2
Andre Harris ATH MO NR NR NR NR

The Hawkeyes also leap Nebraska after picking up three commits—OH S Solomon Warfield, IA LB Trevon Young, and IA TE Ike Boettger—in one day. Like Illinois, they'll need to add some four-star types to the class to stay ahead of the Huskers.

I hadn't realized what a nice OL ND had put together.  I don't pretend to know much about MSU or OSU's depth, but it seems like OL is a glaring hole in both of their classes so far...

That being said, the staff is looking for a tackle, and OGs are unlikely to be taken in this class. Price may switch to OG, but either way the current depth isn't as bad as it seems with the early enrollment from the 2012 class. I predict Kyle Meadows, an in-state guy gets the offer and commits, or else Finley commits, and Meadows never gets his offer.

Agree with Rational. Also, a couple reports have come out saying Chase Farris has switched to OL from DL. He was highly rated on both in high school and is making a good move in my opinion. I think his chances at starting DL in the next couple years were falling. Not that he was a bad DL, but our DL is and will be stocked with talent for the next few years. Similar to UM's OL. Oh, the battles to come.

So I am relatively new to following recruiting, but I am an addict now.  My question starts with a given.  To my understanding, Michigan has 2 spots left in the 2013 class.  If someone (like McQuay) wants to enroll early, we can put them in the 2012 class.  Is there any scenario that allows for us to get 2 more PLUS early enrolee(s)?  Or is there a total scholarship number that is also in play here?
