Tyrece Woods Commits to Michigan Comment Count

BiSB

We interrupt the reading of tea leaves and the burning of entrails over the scraps of information leaking out of the submarine for an actual news update: Belleville Defensive Tackle Tyrece Woods committed to Michigan last night.

In the short term, Woods will cause strife between the star-gazers and the numbers guys. A three-star, Woods is currently the 46th-ranked prospect... in the state of Michigan (#1866 overall). Michigan was also his first and only Power 5 offer. However, his measurables suggest he might have slightly more upside than that.

It is worth noting however, that when both Greg Mattison and Don Brown approve of a defensive lineman, it is generally wise to adjust your opinions accordingly.

Woods is the 20th commit in the class, and the 4th defensive end. However, early indications are that Michigan might be planning to feed him many sandwiches and move him inside to three-tech, making him the second interior lineman in the class (joining Mazi Smith). His Belleville teammate Andre Seldon is committed in the 2020 class.

Informative update to follow.

If the team needs an expert in the area of selecting and obtaining many sandwiches, I'm available.

Seriously, though, if this young man can maintain his athleticism at 280 or so he's going to be a candidate for sleeper of the decade.

Here's to hoping 100,000% is better than 110% and 1000%.... because those haven't worked that well.

Welcome, young Mr. Woods.

Another huge reach by this staff. Taking Ronnie Bell at the end of a cycle is one thing, taking guys like Kent , Woods, and Velazquez before the season even starts is another. Feels like laziness. Also expect the "look at his offer list" folks to move on to the next argument. Probably like trust the coaches or some bullshit.

Stop wasting your time  - Victor Maizen Bluey ONLY cares what 24/7 & ESPN think of a croot, not our coaching staff.

If Alan Trieu didn't see a croot run a good 40 or bench a school bus, it DIDN'T HAPPEN!

If Bill Greene doesn't break a toe kicking a chair when M grabs a croot from ohio then the dude sucks!

I'd ask just ONE question of Victor & other Starz gazers:

Where was last year's Heisman winner & 1st overall draft pick in the rankings for his class?

I've heard a rumor he was a walk on?!

No, it's really not. THAT would be if I said ONLY take walk ons!

It IS however completely accurately pointing out that 24/7, ESPN, Rivals don't ALWAYS know everything, aren't ALWAYS right, and especially in this time of budget cuts, sometimes MISS SOMETHING!

You, among all the denizens of M sites, are so uncompromisingly married to the crootin services that it becomes a running joke to the other habitues, making you seem like a crank committed to propping up the value of his subscriptions!

Hell, we ALL want Bama's classes, but if you think that's a REALITY with our relative lack of success compared to them (or Clemson, or sadly, the buckeyes) then you're just a sad sad dreamer!

But Clemson has made multiple CFPs with lower ranked classes than ours, Oregon has been in, etc... these coaches have to find the best players they can get to commit to Michigan. They COULD wait it out & strike out, like last year, or they could proactively find hard working, nose to the grindstone, COMMITTED players. I salute that approach,  and "lazy" is the last thing I'd call it!

Why you so hateful?!

I’m not quite down to ValVic’s level but getting close.   Is there an average number of 5* 4* and 3* rated total each year or is that number fluid?   Is it a curve?    We see Dantonio hammer out a respectable season now and then, hell, even win the big ten with 2s and 3s so it’s not the star level per se, but rather what the UM coaches seem to be able to land compared to other blue bloods.   Is it the academic hurdle mainly that keeps the truly nfl-bound elite 4*s and 5*s from loading up the roster?   You gotta admit, it is disappointing to see this guy’s measurables but when it comes to the defense we’ve seen D Brown make some stellar coaching decisions that give him wide latitude.  Not so much on offense.  Some doubts started for me when Harbaugh took Ulizio when he did back in 2015 ........ why?   Yes, I’m no cfb recruiter but I have been watching for a LOOOONG time now and I cringed when I saw the Ulizio hello post and “hilites.”  Back in 92 - 96 for example (when I was on campus) it seemed we had a prototype OT - young alpha men that would grow to road graders.  Not sure what these guys see in some of their picks.   Just 2 cents.

I'll admit, that when I saw the thing about Mattison approved...  the first thing that came to mind was his sign-off on vastly undersized Brady Pallante... and then he also went after and offered OL Dan Samuelson.   granted, he has to go after guys summoned by Hoke I guess, but when both these players were given scholarships, even I scratched my head... as if these were simply filling the class for the sake of doing so after missing on everyone else.

Granted, both were late in cycle...   Woods isn't, and they probably ascertained that he will be alot bigger by the time he sets foot on campus....

I'm with all of the other star gazers, when I see a three star guy I'm initially disappointed.   But when I see a 255 pound kid run a 4.65 forty I get a little giddy.   We had a DB on my highschool team who had 12 kick-off and punt returns for TDs my senior year.   No one could tackle him and he ran a 4.8.  (We were class A in Michigan when that meant something.)

...and then I see 225 pounds [26] times!!!!   That's better than the majority of guys at the NFL combine last year.    Maybe he has short arms, but that's pretty good no matter how long your arms are.

Not sure why TW wasn't rated higher considering all of the people scouting Devonte Dobbs, and the QB that spurned MSU for OSU, but  he's got something.

With the athletes OSU accumulates who can zip around the edge in an eyeblink, we have to accumulate guys across the field who can flat-out fly. Yes, it would be nice if in addition to having freak speed they were also bringing advanced technique and production, but if they did, they'd be 5-stars and we wouldn't be signing them.

Instead, you go find superb athletes and hope you can give them top-level coaching to teach them how to get the max out of that physical ability on the field.

The alternative is to get more productive or refined players and teach them how to be faster and more athletic. Mattison is a great coach, but I've never seen him teach someone how to be fast.

These are the guys we have to find.

Only a single post today and it's not even a fully informative one?  Just an announcement that a player committed??  Guys.  Come on.  Whats going on here?  Health problems still?  There has to be SOMETHING one of you can write about.

I'm sorry for complaining but also not sorry because this site needs more articles per day.  Maybe hire some more writers?  I don't know man I'm trying to offer solutions instead of just complaining... and this comment is way too long.  lol

Ace is dealing with health issues and I believe Brian is having/had a baby.    That said, I find myself going to other sites to get most of my info. The board used to make up for any lapses in coverage, but 3.0 has slowed the posting, or at least the non hot take posting.  Isaiah Hole breaks more stories than the board.   I think the trolls and troll accusers on the board have taken a toll.
