Spring Game Rosters, Now Approximately Depth Charted
Charlton and the rest of his DE buddies are mysteriously absent
Michigan released their spring game rosters numerically, which is not helpful unless you're a blogger with a content hole to patch. Here are the teams laid out by position, with the assumption that we're still in 4-3 under land:
OFFENSE | ||
---|---|---|
BLUE | POSITION | MAIZE |
Shane Morris/Wilton Speight | QB | Alex Malzone |
Ty Isaac/Wyatt Shallman | RB | DeVeon Smith/Derrick Green |
Joe Kerridge | FB | Bobby Henderson/Brady Pallante |
Amara Darboh/Drake Harris | WR1 | Jehu Chesson/Da'Mario Jones |
Jaron Dukes | WR2 | Mo Ways/Freddy Canteen |
Bo Dever/Jack Wangler | WR3 | Dennis Norfleet/Brian Cole |
Jake Butt/Ian Bunting | TE | Chase Winovich/AJ Williams |
Logan Tuley-Tillman | LT | Mason Cole |
David Dawson | LG | Erik Magnuson |
Graham Glasgow | C | Patrick Kugler |
Dan Samuelson | RG | Kyle Kalis |
Ben Braden/JBB | RT | Greg Froelich |
DEFENSE | ||
BLUE | POSITION | MAIZE |
Chris Wormley | SDE | Henry Poggi/Tom Strobel |
Ryan Glasgow | NT | Bryan Mone |
Willie Henry | 3TECH | Maurice Hurst |
.. | WDE | Lawrence Marshall |
Allen Gant | SAM | Jared Wangler |
Desmond Morgan | MLB | Joe Bolden |
Royce Jenkins-Stone | WLB | Ben Gedeon |
Blake Countess | CB1 | Channing Stribling |
Jourdan Lewis/Ross Taylor-Douglas | CB2 | Reon Dawson |
Brandon Watson/Terry Richardson | NICKEL | AJ Pearson |
Dymonte Thomas | SS | Jabrill Peppers/Jeremy Clark |
Jarrod Wilson | FS | Delano Hill |
I don't know what happened to the WDEs. They must have been omitted by accident unless Mario Ojemudia, Lawrence Marshall and Taco Charlton all have transfers pending. Mike McCray and Noah Furbush are also absent. Maybe they're also at this hybrid end spot that got accidentally nuked as well.
UPDATE: Marshall is on there. Other guys not so much.
Couple weird depth chart hints:
- Walk-on city at WR on the blue team. If you assume Drake Harris is not going to be full go, which you should, then the Maize team is way overloaded on scholarship WRs.
- Juwann Bushell-Beatty is the sixth OL on the Maize team while the Blue team only has four scholarship OL, one of whom I picked at random to be the right tackle.
- Ondre Pipkins, James Ross, Drake Johnson, and Khalid Hill are other scholarship absentees. The latter two were expected as both are still recovering from ACL tears. Pipkins and Ross are new injuries, and in Pipkins's case an extremely disappointing one.
I like the maize team better.
See below for complete explanation, but Blue is stronger on both lines and has the secondary to compete with Maize's loaded WR corps.
Should be fun to watch.

IDK - our 2nd string defense should be better than our 2nd string offense. So for that reason, I like the Maize team because they seemed to have picked all the theorized offensive starters...or a least most of them. The Blue team doesn't even have a full offensive line with scholarship players. Doesn't have a full set of WRs and, most importantly of all, the Maize team has Peppers lol.
These are my two favorite teams in the known universe.
First impression: Maize offense, Blue defense look like the significantly stronger units.
Morris maybe the first QB to go, given that his supporting cast looks weaker (implying that Maize loaded up on other offensive positions with early picks)?
Entirely baseless speculation, of course.
So it might be safe to assume that, Drevno is Maize and Durkin is Blue.
So draft to your "weakness?" That makes sense too. I can see an offensive coach loading up on defensive talent because he knows he can do more with less on offense.
double posted
Drevno said he didn't have first pick and Peppers was reported as first pick and is on maize... so from that Drevno should be blue maybe
or just slight advantage to blue. I'd take maize safeties, blue corners, LBs are about a push and I'm not sure what's going on with the blue WDE, but looks like the d-lines are about even or slight advantage to blue.
Pretty sure it was reported that Malzone was the first QB taken.
I was looking for that, but on closer look it seems to be more "force" vs. "finesse".
Blue has Isaac, Kerridge, Butt, both Glasgows, Wormley, Henry and Morgan.
Maize has Malzone, Norfleet, both Coles, the Green/Smith duo and Peppers.
Both sides have exceptions (e.g., Countess on Blue, Chesson on Maize) but I just take that to mean neither coordinator is one-dimensional. Or they got their picks poached.
But assuming Blue is Drevno, he seems to think line play will rule the day, going as far as picking walk-ons at WR to snag Butt and Bunting. Maize is betting on playmakers ready to bust out with Mason Cole picked to protect Malzone's blind side.
Do we know what is up with Pipkins???
on Scout that it is concussion related but I am definitely not sure of that.
Was it posted here before? I must have missed it.
Sam Webb said a couple of weeks ago that Pipkins had a head injury of some sort, and speculated that it might have been a concussion. I haven't heard him say anything about Pipkins since then.
I really thought that Ondre had the potential of being a dominating guy in the middle, and it sucks that right when he should have been coming into his own he's gotten hurt.
McCray? I'm 99% sure he practiced yesterday.

Are we supposed to read that as Cole being #6 WR or #2 slot?
No Sione Houme?
He's been injured all spring
with Harris seemingly done, I hope UCLA's Lucien becomes an option.
Ditto regarding Pipkins. What's the deal with this guy? Can't stay on field.
It's as if his body reacts negatively to being slammed repeatedly into other giant humans and/or the ground.
So you are thinking this might not be healthy?
Damn I am going to miss him.
Watching Cutler get slammed to the turf always makes me happy for some reason.
Maize -6
- QB - Toss-up. Numbers edge to Blue.
- RB - Maize. Smith + Green > Isaac + Shallman
- FB - Blue. Kerridge is the best we've got by some distance, IMO, esp. w/Houma out.
- WR - Maize. Blue got Darboh, then Maize got pretty much everyone else, unless Harris is actually healthy.
- TE - Blue. Probably our two best pass-catchers, and one of our best overall players in Jake Butt.
- OL - Blue. But looking at both sides makes me realize we have plenty of good players at OL; if Maize had JBB, it would pretty much be a toss-up.
- DL - Blue. Despite lacking a DE, Glasgow, Henry, and Wormley are three of our best DLs. Maize has no starters there, unless Marshall blows up.
- LB - Slight edge to Maize. Bolden and Gedeon are two of our best. Morgan and RJS are just a notch below. Gant might be a hair better than Wangler, but that's pure sepculation.
- CB - Blue. This is one of the widest gaps, and it will be fun to watch Blue's CBs match-up against Maize's WRs.
- S - Maize by a hair. Wilson is steady and Thomas is explosive, but Peppers, Hill and Clark are a stronger trio.
At first glance, I thought Maize looked better...upon further review, I like Blue's chances to win. Stronger on the lines and no real weaknesses on defense. If Isaac and Shallman can move the ball, they'll be okay only have two proven receiving threats in Darboh and Butt. Maize will need its WRs to outplay Lewis, Countess, Wilson, and Thomas to win. I'm not sure their O-Line will be able to hold-up against Blue in the running game.
GO BLUE!
But Harbaugh and Wheatley might suit up to show the kids how it's done. You heard it first here.
To be fair Blue does have big advantage at TE.
It seems like rather than drafting individuals they packaged positions and drafted the packages. That could be how all the experienced recievers went one way and all the DBs went the other.
That photo of Taco looks like he's about to pounce on a cowering white bunny in the endzone. NO MERCY!!

As fans, we're all about the show. But there is the distinct possibility that these positions were picked the way they were for developmental reasons and not just to win a scrimmage game.
I would not read too much into who got placed where and who "wins" on Saturday.
I think Michigan will win.
Unless you think the coaches are going to air it out with these quarterbacks, I would guess that the secondary won't play a huge role. My guess is we're going to see a lot of running and a lot of short passes.
Forgive me if I'm way behind and/or missed something, but wasn't word on the street that Harris had suffered a season--if not career--threatening injury? I hope seeing his name in the roster proves that to be baseless rumor. I hope.
Looking forward to the Spring Game, but I'm also eager to see the fall premier of Chronicles of Rudock.
I see you Adam Jacobi.
At least for the QBs - I freely admit that I did not look beyond that, but whether scholarship or not they are on the team and were ALL drafted. Pretty sad you guys. Given that the team is stretching to field two complete teams there is a good chance that some of those guys will see the field.
The non-scholarship guys have been working just as hard and giving just as much to the team. They deserve our respect just as much.
For future reference, maybe read the post before getting upset about some immediate slight you think you see.
