the offensive line will no longer be guided by Ed Warinner [Patrick Barron]

Report: Exit Ed Warinner, Hello Ron Bellamy Comment Count

Ace January 23rd, 2021 at 8:00 PM

Ah, so that explains why Michigan officially announced only the defensive half of the coaching staff last week:

The 2021 coaching staff is evidently complete, and it's expected to shake out something like this, as Sam Webb reports that Sherrone Moore will take over the offensive line and add a co-offensive coordinator title:

Head Coach/QBs: Jim Harbaugh

Offensive Coordinator: Josh Gattis
Co-OC/Offensive Line: Sherrone Moore
Running Backs: Mike Hart
Wide Receivers: Ron Bellamy
Tight Ends/Special Teams: Jay Harbaugh

Defensive Coordinator: Mike Macdonald
Co-DC/Cornerbacks: Maurice Linguist
Defensive Line: Shaun Nua
Linebackers: Brian Jean-Mary
Safeties: George Helow

I'm not sure this was the initial plan; there'd been rumors of a coach leaving to make room for Bellamy but until Urban Meyer was hired by Jacksonville that coach wasn't supposed to be Ed Warinner. Webb reports there's a chance Warinner sticks around in an analyst role but he'd be coveted as an offensive line coach if he still wants that job somewhere; he's one of the best in the country.

While Moore has overseen tight ends since breaking into coaching, he played offensive guard for Oklahoma. He's a little smaller than he was in his playing days.

From Moore's official bio:

Moore played two seasons along the offensive line for the University of Oklahoma (2006-07). He played in 14 games at offensive guard and helped the Sooners win two Big 12 Championships and played in two BCS bowl games. Before joining the Sooners, Moore was a two-year starter at Butler County (Kansas) Community College. He was a member of two conference championship teams the posted a 20-3 record. Moore earned second-team all-conference accolades.

Meanwhile, Bellamy is fresh off coaching West Bloomfield and Michigan-bound running back Donovan Edwards to the first state championship in program history. He played receiver for M from 1999-2002, starting 25 games, so he has no shortage of familiarity with the school, and he should be an immediate asset as a recruiter, particularly in-state.

This is a very young and recruiting-focused staff. We'll have more on it when the news isn't freshly breaking on a Saturday night.

Hart and Bellamy should both be plus recruiters in state. I was reading an article where both Wilcher at Cass and Caldwell at Belleville, who sounded surprisingly receptive, both acknowledged that Mike Hart is very highly regarded in the high school coaching ranks in Detroit. Bellamy is obviously very well established and respected in his own right.

There are some pretty good in-state prospects in the next few recruiting cycles, albeit it is pretty top heavy per usual. The QB at MLK is a '23 recruit and he is trending towards a top 100 lock and a potential 5* talent. I haven't heard much about his recruitment or Michigan's involvement other than they have offered, but certainly would be good to dial up the pursuit on him at this stage in his recruitment with some highly regarded coaches in the Detroit area.

Gotta say, I effing hate this. Warriner was by far our best coach. Does anyone even think Moore will be half the OL coach of Darrell Funk? Good god. This is god awful..

There was certainly a lot of talk about paying Harbaugh less so we could afford better assistants, right?  Not saying these guys won’t be good but we certainly didn’t have to pay top dollar for them.  This was a huge cost cutting move.  I also don’t see Harbaugh as a lame duck coach anymore.  This is a move by the AD and president to change the culture.  All signs point to Harbaugh staying forever if he’s happy with $4 million a year and an AD that will cycle in low cost coordinators once these guys leave.  There is no other reason to boot Warinner.

That talk never made any sense.  No top-flight assistant that we would need to pay top dollar for is going to come here with the uncertainty surrounding the future of Harbaugh as the HC.  Getting young, hungry assistants is the best we could have hoped for.

I wonder what the story is behind Warriner leaving, however.  Moore sounds good but how could he be an upgrade over Warriner?  Why would we want to push Warriner out or why would he choose to leave without having another job lined up?  So many questions.

Wow! For a program rumored to be a disorganized mess, did Michigan bring anyone in that is a stabilizing force? I think the youth movement is a welcome development, but seemingly pushing Warriner out the door is bonkers. This is boom or bust for Harbaugh. I’m hoping for boom, but not confident it will happen.

It does seem like the strategy is to go all in with recruiting. Hopefully Moore is as good as Warinner. Aside from All’s inability to catch fastballs from Milton, our TEs did look pretty good. I also like that he played the position fairly recently.

My only worry is that it doesn’t matter how relatable the coaches are if we’re not winning. This strategy probably would have been a lot more effective a couple years ago. Next year we’ll be relying on a lot of underclassmen.

The irony here is that if JH was hiring a bunch of young white guys the default reaction would not be "better recruiter than coach". They'd get the benefit of the doubt as guys with good coaching accumen who can probably also recruit. In this case, lots of commenters are assuming these are recruiting focused hires instead of hiring guys who are really good coaches. It's quite insulting to these coaches, I'm sure.

Sherrone Moore has never coached offensive linemen. Mo Lindquist is an excellent cornerbacks coach but he especially made a name for himself as a recruiter. Ron Bellamy clearly provides recruiting benefits and has never been a wide receiver coach at the college level.

Bellamy should be just fine or better than fine coaching his position and we know Lindquist can coach. Moore is the one wildcard since offensive line is such a tough position to coach up. But I don't know that race necessarily has that much to do with people's sentiments.

Honestly, too many Mgoblog posters bitch for the sake of bitching. Aside from taking risks on Moore coaching a new position and Helow as safeties coach, these are not unconventional hires by any stretch.

You are correct. It's obviously critical to bring in very talented high school players.

However, once they are brought in, it's also critical to develop them and turn them into very talented college players that win games. And increasingly, it's becoming more important to be able to hang onto them.

I don't care about the race of the coaches. During the Harbaugh years, UM has had plenty of very talented players whose teams underachieved in terms of wins/losses.

I know this comment will piss off the ignorant, but it can’t be understated given the focus of representation in predominantly black sports during this time period especially after 2020 and Hank Aaron’s passing.

The Harbaugh family has always been on the forefront of offering minorities opportunities. Kudos.

The ones downvoting probably also thought Juwan Howard was in over his head, didn’t know Xs and Os or couldn’t recruit. Lmfao.

I believe in the most highly skilled person for the job be it sports or business or politics.  If that means all black, white, brown or yellow, so be it.

When a coach can teach and cares about his kids, the players know it and will give 100 percent.  Recruiting may be a different matter with emphasis on "may."

That's pretty much where I'm at. Bunch of relatively inexperienced coaches taking over a team with roster issues. Gonna be tough.

My hopes for next year are that they can make and WIN a bowl. Any bowl. I don't care if it's the Duke's Mayo Bowl. Win a bowl game for once.

Who here is inexperienced? Guess it’s dumb to hire from the high school ranks then? Worked out poorly for Kerry Coombs and Gus Malzahn and everyone else like that. People like you are a huge problem in the hiring culture. You believe experience trumps skill. I have been of the silent minority that experience laden Zordich was the WORST coach on our staff for many years.

Our defensive coordinator has never been a defensive coordinator before. I think that counts as inexperience.

That doesn't mean he is a bad coach or destined to fail but having coaches with a strong track record is what big hires look like. These hires are Hail Marys and they've got roster issues to scheme around too, so maybe just don't be surprised when Michigan isn't a top 25 team again.
