Rayshaun Benny Has Committed to Michigan Comment Count

Aw Sparty.

Benny is the second 4-star defensive tackle to commit to a Michigan badly in need of them in the last few weeks. Until today he was the most important commitment in Michigan State’s class. I’ll have a hello up today or tomorrow.

Never know how recruiting will play out and who will still be with the program in 2 years but overall a very very strong class!  Looks like an A- to me with the minus being only 1 cornerback in the class.  Hopefully we can go shopping at the portal to shore that need up.

Corner is a need, but we're not Bama, we will always have holes unfortunately.

Unlike Saban's machine, we won't have 2 lockdown, 6'1 , 4.4 - 40 guys coming in every year, just like we won't have a 6 ft, 290 lb lightning quick NT, yet orb shaped NT coming in every year.

Don Brown coached as if he had UM's 2017's defensive personnel every year, hence why we could dominate lesser talented teams buy got blown up by simple drag routes and wheel routes against teams with talent.

I don't that feel that's historically accurate, at least from a class perspective at the time of signing versus looking back after the fact where transfers, poor development, etc. may have taken place.

UM signed 5/7 top 6 classes from '99-'05.  Then, we had a dropoff during the RR years.  Then, Hoke had 2/4 top 6 classes.  Now JH has been 8, 5, 22, 8, 14, and now 10.  His only real poor class was #22 in 2018 on paper.  Even last year's #14 class was only lower due to numbers.  The per class ranking was pretty much the same as 2019 and 2021.  I'd guess if recruiting rankings went back even further into the 70s, 80s, and 90s you'd see similar numbers to Carr's early 2000s classes.

So, I don't think it's historically accurate that UM will always have holes.  If you're averaging a 4-8ish class which is what UM has typically done under Carr that's plenty good enough to not have holes.  There is no reason to think under the right circumstances with the right assistants that UM can't consistently be a fringe top 5 recruiting class destination without any holes.  All the resources are there.

At the very least we can recruit them.

A month and a half ago I was very, very nervous about our recruiting class. Now I'm amazed. From my chair it seems like this new staff is crazy on recruiting.

We still have to complete the cycle by keeping them and developing them. Hopefully Harbaugh returns to Rudock/early Speight form with the QB's, Moore works out at OL, and Nua can get the D line clicking in a way that we need. Next year is a bit of a black box. I'm hoping the coaching staff comes out like an NFL player working in the last year of his contract. I'm rooting for them.

It was interesting see a bunch of MSU insiders make fun of UM people talking about this flip when you could sort of see it a mile away.  Like, it was a slow moving train wreck for them but it definitely was happening.

As always, Benny and Rooks won't be contributing early, but this gives me hope that the tackle spots will have some depth in a year or two.

I wasn't claiming it was a given but every day a kid doesn't commit to a school he's had opportunities to is a sign he might be considering other options.

Now, if you told me in 2 years Benny transfers I wouldn't be shocked, but a guy who was considered a UM lean for a long time stalling his commitment to MSU based on some convoluted discussion about a car accident over the summer always felt a bit off.  So yeah, I wasn't shocked he flipped.

Whoa!  Didn’t really think that was going to happen.  These last few DT commitments kind of make me think that maybe there is something to the “Don Brown doesn’t value large DT” comments.  He leaves, and boom!  I feel a lot better about the class today.  If only we could suddenly get 3 new DBs too.

Having seen this young man play, I'm excited about his character as much as his talent.

M has a really good one coming this fall.
