One Frame At A Time: Maryland Comment Count

Ace November 7th, 2019 at 9:23 AM

This is here, but not in the top ten, because while I loved this shot of the blocking on the opening kickoff—particularly Michael Barrett's open-field pancake—wirecam on returns is undefeated.

[Hit THE JUMP for the wirecam shot and much more.]

The Full Album

Lives here.

The Top Ten

10. Full-Contact Five Hundred

When going for a cut block, you really want to hit... something. Anything.

9. That Moment When...

...you realize you chose to coach a program that's significantly closer to being Rutgers than Indiana, and despite this, you've also chosen to participate in beefs with coaches within your division.

8. Gil Up The Gut

Yeah, probably should've accounted for that guy in the blocking scheme.

7. Diet Bullrush

Maryland's right tackle outweighs Josh Uche by about 50 pounds. You wouldn't have guessed that given the way the above played out.

6. Wait For It

Remarkable patience on the part of Zach Charbonnet to wait for Ben Bredeson and Nick Eubanks to open a path to the end zone. Slick cut, too.

5. Hey It Worked Again

Wild how that keeps happening.

4. Seeking Contact

I don't think the safety expected a 200-pound former walk-on to hit the truck stick at the end of a long run. He was wrong, and Tru Wilson let him know about it.

3. Plotting Your Demise

[Jaws theme plays]

2. Flying V

I love this view of the fake punt. You can tell they get the first down because the sticks are in the background. Otherwise: CHAOS.

FRAMES OF THE GAME: WIRE TO WIRE

A little moment I appreciated here: it looks like the wirecam operator is going to zoom way out to show the stands when Giles Jackson hits the open field, then realizes very few people are in said stands and keeps the shot focused on the field.

VOTE OR BE DISENFRANCHISED

I'm tempted to do away with the voting in these posts because I've never really done anything with it and it's annoying to put together, plus people just use the comments for a similar purpose anyway, but I'll keep it going this week while taking your feedback.

I still can't believe the lack of effort by the kicker on the opening kick off. I have to believe if he pushes Giles at all, his momentum takes him out of bounds.

I wouldn't attribute something to lack of effort when it can much more easily be accounted for by "being a kicker" and "taking a terrible angle." He tries to get a shove in but has no angle to get any force on Jackson.

It always looks like the kicker is loafing on returns because they've got to jog to remain the last line of defense. Most of them are also bad at the non-kicking parts of football.

Tru Wilson's truck was completely glorious. Also I was more focused on the kick-out blocks to free Jackson in his TD run- but now that I've been watching and the open-field pancake block is also a thing of beauty. Hope these guys keep up the destruction all the way through the season, starting with Sparty in a week. I hope to be saying Sparty NOOO!! a lot next Saturday.

If a team is using a spread punt formation, it seems like a huge mistake to allow such a big gap between the longsnapper and the guards that a guy can squeeze through. The rule prohibiting defenses from hitting the longsnapper should be a big advantage to the punt team, because that guy can take up space just by being there. But that's negated if the space immediately on either side of him is open.

If a team has a nearly guaranteed first down fake-punt in their arsenal, it seems like a huge mistake to pull it out during a never close game against Maryland.  The rule allowing teams not to use super cool plays against baby seals should be a big advantage to a team seeking to beat its primary rival for the first time in nearly a decade.  But that is negated if the play has already been shown a month before that match-up.

I hear you but let's not kid ourselves. Plays like that work more often against cupcakes like Maryland, and are less likely to strike against the OSUs of the world.

Case and point (EDIT: Case IN point... the more you know) , the 2016 M vs OSU game where Ohio State tried a fake punt. It got gobbled up. And then we lost anyway.

That's nihilism for you.

I know it's not the popular one, but it should be.  Wait for it almost made me tear up a bit.  It's nice to see RBs who make cuts and hit the holes rather than just bury themselves into the back of the line.

No, the voting is fun. (Though that footage of the flying wedge on the fake punt should have won.) To build the value you could either have a run-off of the best of each month or a year-end vote.

I missed flying wedge live because the dog took me out, and it was Maryland so I let it run. Now watching it, I wish I hadn't. What a football play. These are the kind of creative wacky idea plays that make me think Old Harbaugh is really back.

That said, the opening return set the mood for the day. It's ok. Relax. Nap a little. Take the dog out for some fresh air. We're playing Maryland after all ...

KEEP THE FRANCHISE!

  • Comments are great, but the voting reminds me that most MGoBloggers are football savvy and love nuance in addition to the big plays.   Some of the sleeper clips get a lot of love in the voting like Tru Wilson's truck stick.
  • We have enough threats to voting and democracy in the world right now -- don't take away our meaningless votes.   The MGoBlog elite will run roughshod over infrequent contributors without the vote.
  • You can use the voting to assemble a GIF playoff at year end because the Team won't be in the CFB.  It will be a nice way to highlight the season once it is over.

Underrated emerging theme of this year's One Frame at a Time.  What used to be the dominant purview of Harbaugh's explosive antics has been taken over by the menace of Don Brown. Dr. Blitz is more than welcome!

Upon further review of "hey it worked again," I really wish that Patterson would get that ball a little deeper and to the left.  If he does that, Collins is walking into the endzone for six instead of making a miraculous catch.

I keep watching No. 5 "Hey It Worked Again" and after considering carefully, I think I may be on to something here. We may be underutilizing Nico Collins. I'm serious, has anyone else noticed this?

Kinda wished we saved that fake punt for OSU as well, however, putting out two fake punts this year - especially this one - ought to have hidden dividends on defense vs. returns. Right?  Foes watching that film have to be concerned with putting some beef out there and keeping it on the line of scrimmage, not running back to set up blocks.   Seems like the ability to fake is an advantage with this formation so I'm glad to see we are taking it.

Props to Uche and the boys but after seeing the first GIF of the whole line whiffing on cut-blocks I may have to go with Maryland being very bad.
