Jett was shooting from everywhere tonight [Marc-Gregor Campredon]

Michigan 93, Nebraska 72 Comment Count

Sometimes, when it rains, it pours. This was more or less the summation of Michigan's offensive performance tonight as the Wolverines' Men's Basketball team drowned visiting Nebraska in threes en route to a comfortable 21 point win. The Huskers managed to shoot 48% from the floor and crack 70 points, yet still spent nearly the entirety of the final 30 minutes trailing by double digits, because Michigan's offense was a machine that couldn't be stopped for long. The Wolverines nailed 14 threes on 26 attempts, shot 58% from the floor as a team, and added 11 points at the line, with every starter in double digits. A pretty good winning formula.

The two teams got out to scorching starts, trading scores in the opening four minutes as barely a shred of defense was being played on either end. Each team had scored in double digits 5.5 minutes into the game and the score sat at a competitive 12-11 in favor of the visiting Huskers. The light switched stayed on for the Wolverines after that, while it was flipped off for Nebraska, as Michigan stitched together a rapid fire 12-0 run, pouring in points from all over. Terrance Williams II scored five quick points on a three and a layup, followed by an and-one for Kobe Bufkin, a three for Joey Baker, and one driving layup each from Tarris Reed Jr. and Bufkin. In between, the Huskers committed four consecutive turnovers and suddenly found themselves down 25-12.

A CJ Wilcher three ended the unanswered run, but it was merely a small impediment in what was ultimately a larger Michigan avalanche of points. Jace Howard hit a three and all the sudden, the Maize & Blue were in a groove again. They put together an 8-0 run to stretch the lead all the way up to 18, and a few minutes later, it was 24, following eight straight points from Baker, with two makes from three. Michigan could not miss, and they were doing it without any contributions from Hunter Dickinson, perhaps the most impressive component of all.

But good things don't last forever and the beaten down Huskers had an answer in the final 6.5 minutes of the half. Nebraska's defense started to force some misses and turnovers and it gave their offense an opportunity to claw back. They would proceed to finish the first half on a 17-5 run, capped off by a disastrous final 30 seconds for the Michigan offense, which included two turnovers despite the team having the ability to hold for the final shot on the initial possession. The Huskers went into halftime with momentum, down just 12 points. They'd given up 46 but scored 34 of their own and had reason for hope if they could slow down the Michigan offense.

Spoiler alert, they wouldn't be able to. The first few minutes of the second half were alright for the visitors, Michigan scoring just one bucket in the opening two minutes of the second half as Nebraska trimmed the lead down to nine. Unfortunately for Fred Hoiberg's squad, that's when Hunter Dickinson got going. Despite Michigan's offensive onslaught in the first half, Dickinson was not part of that equation. He had just two points on one attempted FG, logging 12 minutes. Everyone knew that Dickinson wouldn't be quiet forever, and he wasn't. Hunter made a layup with 17:42 remaining in the second half to push the Michigan lead back up over double digits and he was beginning to enter a groove.

It helped that Jett Howard was also catching fire and those two, #1 and #13, would power Juwan Howard's crew in the back half of the game. After Nebraska's Derrick Walker made it 48-39, Michigan went on a 10-2 run, entirely the doing of Dickinson and Howard, two threes for the latter. Just like that, the score was back to a comfortable Michigan margin, 58-41. From that point, Michigan just kept hammering away. Jett Howard led the way, the defensive compete was good enough, and then complementary players like Dug McDaniel and Reed got involved. With 11:41 remaining in the game, the lead was stretched all the way back up to 21, 68-47 Wolverines.

Nebraska wasn't totally done. Sam Griesel embarked on his own 7-0 run immediately after, followed by four points from CJ Wilcher and in the span of only a few minutes, the lead was back to 10. This was the inflection point of the game. Just over eight minutes remaining and a moment set to determine whether the contest would be competitive down to the wire or whether Michigan would snatch firm control back. Dickinson's and-one started things off strong for Michigan, but the Husker offense didn't go away. Neither team got too many stops over the next few minutes, with the lead sitting at 11 with five minutes to play.

That was the point when Michigan slammed the door. Nebraska did not score again for three minutes and every Michigan starter but McDaniel got involved on the offensive end. Howard made a three, Terrance Williams II connected on a jumper, Dickinson stepped out for a three, and Kobe Bufkin slammed down a dunk that made it an 88-67 Michigan advantage, ending the game for all intents and purposes. The final minutes played out and Juwan Howard inserted his benchwarmers in the last 56 seconds before the ultimate horn sounded. 93-72 Michigan.

On a night where shots are going in from everywhere, the final box score is a sight to see. Dug McDaniel battled turnovers (four, compared to four assists), but was an efficient 5/7 from the floor and 2/2 from three for 14 points. Dickinson turned it on in the second half to finish with 16 points on the night, a hyper efficient 6/7 from the field. Kobe Bufkin battled turnovers as well but did score 13, while Williams chipped in 10 and Jett Howard was a star: 22 points on 7/17 from the field, including 6/14 from three. Jett kept shooting, and shooting, and shooting some more and tonight it was a good decision. Off the bench, Joey Baker hit three triples on the way to 11 points, Jace Howard hit a three, and Tarris Reed Jr. scored four points, two of which off a perfect night from the charity stripe(!).

For Nebraska, the work of Keisei Tominaga deserves a shoutout. The Japanese guard was 10/16 from the field and 4/8 from three and logged 36 minutes, by far the Huskers' best piece. Derrick Walker scored 15 on 7/14 from the floor as well, but the Huskers didn't have enough firepower in totality to hang with the Wolverines tonight.

Michigan has now won three straight games, up to 14-10 on the season and 8-5 in the B1G, and has one more game on the present homestand. That would be Indiana on Saturday night, a 6:00 tip at Crisler Center and a big opportunity for a quality win. That game is set to be broadcast on ESPN.

It's a free country, but you are wrong, except for soccer.  I doubt you will change your mind, but please share your source.  I am using my memory and experience, but many sources do agree.

Away Team vs. Home Team

When you get to sports, it’s more complicated because it varies by country. In the United States, the home team is usually written second (i.e., Away vs. Home). So if the Chicago Bulls are playing the Los Angeles Lakers in Los Angeles, you’d see the game described as Bulls vs. Lakers because the Lakers are the home team. Again, that’s in the US, and the Associated Press says that in this case it’s OK to abbreviate versus as vs.

Home Team vs. Away Team

However, in many other countries, it’s the opposite: the home team is listed first, and even the Associated Press tells its writers that if they are writing for the international wire, put the home team first and the away team second.

Hey, we're in second place in the Big Ten. If the second ended today, we'd get a double bye in the B1G Tournament.

I was at the game. The work by the second unit in the first half was incredible. It doesn't show up in the stat sheet, but Tarris Reed had a great game. His effort on defense was great, and that 2-for-2 at the line might have been the best moment of the night.

Keep it going, fellas.

So there was a board post title earlier today saying that Kobe Bufkin and Jett Howard could both go pro at the end of this year.  It looks like the Mods deleted it before I could read it so I'm assuming it was some sort of garbage.   ...but it got my hopes up.  We're on a 3 game win streak and are on the bubble.  Are Jett and Kobe peaking/breaking out at the right time?  Do we have a chance to finish the year strong?  Maybe make a run in the B1G tournament and win a couple of games in the NCAAs?     Are we out of basketball BPONE this year?

In his last 5 games, Bufkin is averaging 13 PPG, 7.4 RPG, 4.4 APG on 60% shooting and those numbers are even better in the last 3 games. If he keeps playing like this, with Jett playing as he’s been and Hunter seemingly coming out of whatever funk he’s been in, then I’m optimistic about how this team finishes. With that being said, Bufkin’s play as of late certainly hasn’t gone unnoticed by NBA writers/scouts

Kobe looked like a pro prospect last night, and really over the past couple weeks. The Athletic wrote about it already. He looks a lot better than Caleb did, thats for sure. He’s like baby Caris. Caris did stay 3 years, and Kobe is a shade younger than Jett, so hopefully he will stay one more year, but he could go and get drafted.

On saturday, we are going to get a close up look at what a one and done looks like when they stay 3 years. I fear that TJD is going to put HD into a blender.

Kobe has been playing extremely well the last 3-5 games even though his 3 pointer hasn't been consistent. He's scoring inside the arc, rebounding, passing, and defending. The thing with Kobe is that it feels like he is a better 3 point shooter than he's showing and it's not hard to squint and see NBA spacing helping that

I fear that TJD is going to put HD into a blender.

Historically, he has done no such thing

Before game at Northwestern we were 5 point underdogs, and beat that spread by what, 18 ?   This shows that perception isn't reality, and the team is alot better than the pundits think.  Need a few key wins, but we should sneak into the tournament.     And considering we lost four starters effectively last season (houstan, diabate, brooks, smith) and collins, I am pleasantly surprised we are even above .500  Losing brooks, smith, AND collins, was especially brutal because even the backup point is gone.    The juwan hate on this site, has no perspective.

Agree on the CMU / Iowa comment. Using Bart Torvik's simulation, Michigan currently is the 16th team out of the tournament with a 0.7% chance to make the tournament (I think that's probably a little low, but not totally insane). If you change the Iowa and CMU games to wins, Michigan is not only in the tournament, but one of the last four teams to avoid the play-in and have a 70% chance to make the tournament. Ugh.

Not that it's a surprise or anything, but I get a kick out of how, after every win, one group comes on here to post their thoughts of optimism and hope, and after every loss, another group comes on here to post their criticisms, scorn, and derision towards Coach Howard.

I'm sure it's my imagination, but it sometimes kind of feels like that second group is almost disappointed when we win, because they can't say "told you so" and express their superior understanding of how terrible this team is.

Eh, I mean, I get it. Basketball teams win and lose a lot more than football teams do to begin with, so ups and downs are not uncommon -- and God knows this team even more than most seems to revel in getting people's hopes up by playing well (remember Pittsburgh?) and then immediately throw those hopes away by playing terribly (remember ASU and CMU?).

Still. Glad tonight was one of the "good" games, if only to silence those inevitable voices demanding that Howard be fired (and citing Warde's failure to do so as somehow being additional proof of his alleged incompetence as well) for another few days. I'm sure those voices will come back soon enough, but for tonight: Sweet silence. :-)

Go Blue. Beat the Hoosiers on Saturday. Please?

this reaction to everything on this board is almost as expected as sunrise

Fire Harbaugh..... Glad he's back

Coach B needs to go....... Coach B always has his teams peaking at tourney time.

Don Brown is king..... Don Brown should be fired yesterday

Fire Howard, maybe coach B will come back......   Juwan has this team playing great, 1st round bye?

I will simply note a basketball reality. Offense has good nights and bad nights-for even the best teams. A good team's defense never has an off night. The reality of this team is that they can have very good offensive performances...which is a very good thing because they need it to overcome being a bad to very bad defensive team. Defense is largely dependent upon effort. This team struggles with the commitment to defensive excellence-the reasons for this reality can be (hotly) debated.

On this night Michigan lit it up offensively. Defensively, they still can't guard their grandmothers. I neither like this nor do I get it.

recency bias and always blue colored sunglasses but this end of the season run to make the tourney is going to be a fun ride for MGoBlog

We'll have a bye in the B1G tourney and win one game there, ending with probably 19 wins and ANOTHER tourney invite... where we'll win our two first games b/c of course we will make the Sweet 16. We're Michigan

I still think they're on the outside looking in when it comes to the tourney but if they beat Indiana and can pick up a road win or two then they'll probably be on the right side of the bubble.  They're still paying for the sins of early season play but this is the type of team I sort of expected this year.  Not great defensively but offensively dynamic enough to beat anyone.

Too many defensive breakdowns, FIRE EVERYONE!

Seriously, though, that was the biggest irritant in a game that didn't have too many of them.  We're talking very basic plays being defended so poorly that Nebraska got easy dunks and layups.  Nebraska!  Fortunately it was only sporadic, especially early.  Otherwise, a little sloppy with the ball and that's about it.

On the plus side, the offense flowed pretty well.  Jett took a lot of shots and almost all of them were good shots.  Dug hit his shots.  They built that big early lead without leaning on Hunter, then when Nebraska fought back he stepped up and took control.  Good games for Bufkin and Baker.

Indiana will be a real litmus test for how much the team has improved.  LFG.

Ah Yes.... The Ebbs and flow of a middle of the road Big Ten team finding their way is both Joyous and Painful....  There are moments of complete brilliance in this squad and then some true WTF are we doing times. Basketball is fickle and when the round orange ball goes through the round orange ring it is spectacular and when it doesn't it can rip out your heart! GO BLUE

I know we won but our defense was awful. Our offense was awful too, we just hung around the 3pt line for 30s on half our possessions. We couldn't crack the zone for shit. So many turnovers. Ran so little offense. Yah we blew them out because we had our best shooting night in years, but that's just luck. We played like shit and we'll lose 99.9% of the games we play like this (because we won't shoot like this).
