This game could have been any in the first half of the season. There was lackadaisical offensive rebounding, missed assignments on defense, freshmen turning good possessions into fadeaway long twos, wingers picking up ticky-tack fouls, and Hunter Dickinson setting up way too high in the post.

This game also could have been any in their resurgent February. Michigan corrected its mistakes on the fly, contested the rim with its lineup of two bigs, cycled into drawing three charges (could have been five), found buckets from a more aggressive Dickinson in the paint, fixed a dislocated finger, and erased a late deficit to put themselves in position to win a desperately needed Q1 road game in the Big Ten.

This game also could have been academic, had Michigan admissions found their way to letting Terrance Shannon finish a few credits of his Texas Tech degree on campus. Illinois, like every other D-I university in America, had no issues. Michigan, like every team without a wing eraser like Shannon, had an impossible time shutting that guy down.

This game could have ended down 7 near the end of regulation. It could have ended up 7 near the end of the first overtime. This game could have put them in the tournament field. Instead, this game ended on a Joey Baker airball.

Michigan started hot early, with an early threes from their two stars Hunter Dickinson and Kobe Bufkin. But things quickly turned into a slog as neither team was able to get the shots they were hunting. Illinois mostly took advantage of the slippery hands of Dickinson, who had three turnovers in the frame to just four field goals. It certainly wasn't Dickinson's best half; he struggled to get the ball deep into the post, and settled for a lot of low-percentage hooks.

The other issue that came back emphatically in the first half was a rusty Jett Howard. In his first game back from an ankle injury, Jett was the usual culprit on missed rotations and boxouts. Other than an impressive early drive and dunk, Jett wasn't great on the other end either, forcing offense when it wasn't there and missing open teammates when it was. Michigan held a 2 or 4 point lead most of the half, but missed a big opportunity to generate a real lead when Dickinson tipped a Kobe Bufkin miss back out to the arc and Jett sleepily allowed the dribbler to be snatched by an opportunistic Illini. Instead of a shot at a 6- or 7-point lead Jett had to foul on the breakaway. It was the second time he'd turned a turnover into a foul counter on himself. Those fouls would be relevant.

Late in the half, Illinois took a 33-31 lead when Jett failed to box out Ty Rogers on a clock-draining drive by Shannon, leading to an and-one dunk. Dug McDaniel drew a foul on the floor but missed the front end of a one-and-one to give Illinois a two-point lead going into the break.

The Wolverines started Will Tschetter in both halves, and both times he looked overmatched, picked up quick fouls, and had to leave the floor. Michigan would go with Reed or Terrance Williams at the sore four spot the rest of the way. Jett also spent long stretches in the second half on the bench after Illinois finally hit a few of their stepback triples to build the game's first lead of any consequence.

That's when Kobe Bufkin dislocated his finger. As a horrified Jaelin Llewellin looked on, Bufkin's finger was put back in place. Kobe then promptly hit stepback threes in back-to-back possessions, capping a 10-0 Michigan run that put the Wolverines up 57-56. Illinois replied with a run of their own to go up 70-63 with 2:35 remaining in the 2nd half. Jett checked back in.

Earlier in the season it might have ended at that. Instead both teams traded 7-0 runs to force two overtimes.

Michigan forced the first on strong defense by Tarris Reed, good post work by Hunter Dickinson, a desperation drive through two defenders by Kobe Bufkin, and Jett  sinking an open three. Michigan had the ball with a chance to win, got the ball to a singled Hunter, but contact wasn't called and a good look didn't fall.

Their momentum carried into the extra five. Dickinson got away with a travel to create a bunny, and sank a floater on his next post touch to go up 79-74. Illinois tried another stepback three, a good bet this game since caroms off bricks were their best source of offensive rebounds, but this time Bufkin came down emphatically with the rebound. Jett sank a pair of free throws to put his team up 81-74.

Illinois responded with their own 7-0 run. Shannon drove into both Reed and Dickinson to draw contact for an and-one. Michigan struggled to inbound the next possession, and Dickinson picked up a tetchy but callable offensive foul trying to dribble himself clear instead of just calling timeout. Shannon drove under the basket for two, Dug missed an open three off a Hunter double, and Shannon drew another foul on Reed, who fouled out on the play. Michigan had the ball with 21 seconds to end it, but Duke transfer Joey Baker pulled the trigger early, and missed his three. Jett Howard collided with Kobe Bufkin trying to rebound, and Illinois had a chance to win but fumbled it instead of shooting as the first overtime expired.

Falling behind by five, Michigan had their chances to force a third overtime. Illinois's Coleman Hawkins fouled Dickinson, and called and received a hook and hold review. The review just showed him fouling Dickinson a lot, Hawkins kept yammering anyways.

Still up three, Illinois went hunting for daggers. A pullup triple fell short enough to come off the rim hard, but Jett boxed Shannon out to the free throw line to collect the rebound. Unfortunately he got swatted at on the other end, and Illinois got possession on the tie-up. They missed another heat check, followed by a Jett Howard miss opened by a double on Dickinson. Illinois the drew up an open three for their sharpshooter that also missed.

With enough time left for a stop and two possessions, the Wolverines got the ball to Dickinson low, who backed down a still-complaining Matthew Hawkins, and scored through contact, but missed his and-one opportunity, part of 2/5 night from the stripe for the big man. The ball then went to Shannon, but Jett got in front of him and forced a terrible shot. Unfortunately this one was so off it rimmed back out to Illinois. Jett had to foul, his fifth.

Dug McDaniel took the ball upcourt and called timeout. With 6.3 seconds left, Juwan Howard schemed a wide open three off the inbound for Baker, who rushed his shot, and airballed.

Michigan travels to Bloomington on Sunday for one last shot at a tournament resume, barring a deep run in the Big Ten Tournament. If they don't win that game, they can look back at this game, or that game, or the many, many, many games this season they could have won, but ultimately came up short.

Box score after the jump.

It's been a frustrating season, but Juwan has had a ton of bad luck thrown his way. The starting lineup of this team should be Frankie Collins, Bufkin, Terrance Shannon, Diabate/Houstan, and Dickinson, with Jett and Dug coming off the bench. That lineup would contend for the conference title.

I find it nearly impossible to believe that a B1G record of 11-9 or 12-8  does not mean auto-dance for UMich even in this exceptionally odd year.

I mean, I don’t know what to tell you, but it’s not going to. Michigan was on the outside looking in when they had a 11-7 B1G record. They’re probably going to need to jump at least 3-7 teams over the next week if they want to go dancing.

This is a good point but just because the league is still the second best doesn't mean it's also not down relative to the past 10-15 years, which it is.  But you're right the ACC is probably the worst it's ever been, astonishingly so.

The big 12 is just so good that it takes up so many of the coveted top 30 spots in NET so there aren't nearly as many home q1 games in the big ten.  And the SEC and Pac12 have more good teams than usual so they're also taking top 30 spots even if they're not as good as the big ten overall.

Michigan also had a slightly easier than average conference schedule since they only had Purdue once and Minnesota twice.

That 6-5 non-conference record with a loss to CMU was really bad.

I mean, yeah, shoulda woulda coulda.  Heartbreaking.

But damn, what an effort they put in -- in the second OT as well -- and full credit to this ragamuffin team.

Something I *never* thought I'd say, but I find myself now, finally, liking to watch them play, as painful as the results sometimes end up being.

Also, I hope we can more or less avoid the inevitable whining about the officiating. Yeah, it looked like the refs missed a bunch of calls on the Illini, but they called the flop on them, it looked like the block on Bufkin's lay up was clean, Dickinson probably got away with goaltending in addition to the travel.

Obviously there were some calls that went against us as well, and DAMN that was a physical game, but nobody can claim we didn't get our share of the calls.

I'll disagree on the refereeing.  It favored the Illini and that was the difference in the game.  Home court advantage is for a reason!

If you watched the first 3/4 of the game, you'd have seen twice as many fouls called on Michigan as Illinois.  It got so that Illinois players would just go to the basket at full speed knowing they would get the foul call.  On the other end, much fewer calls against the Illini.  And that's how they kept the game close in the first half.

Sorry.  I thought we were getting hometowned early, but then it evened up in regulation with bad calls both ways.  So I am with you right up until the first OT.  Ill down by 7 and the refs simply went to work to bring them back (along with Michigan playing stupid defensively).  Calling that offensive foul on Hunter in OT when guys were banging and hanging all over him the whole game was a game changer and enough for me to walk out of the room.  And the and-ones with Shannon flinging himself into traffic were just too much (but again, our pathetic defense played a big role there also).

It sure was an entertaining game, though not sure it was fun the way it turned out.  I was certain they were going to win during regulation even though they were down 7 near the end.  And they sure had their chance with the the last shot.  Then I was especially certain they would win in the first OT when they went up by 7.  And then they last the last chance for a shot again, and Dickinson had it -- who had been so successful with earlier shots.  But no.  It seemed to me that if they couldn't win with the game handed to them twice that the second OT would be a problem.  And it was.  But they battled -- just like the Wisconsin game!!  Too bad points aren't awarded for tie games, such as in hockey.

Man, what a disappointing and weird game. This game had a huge last-minute comeback - but also had a huge blown lead, really showcasing Michigan's dual nature. But, my kingdom for a clutch shot, MY GOD. Juwan draws 'em up but nobody can knock 'em down.

Jett hit some shots but I was a little disappointed in his play, probably due to the injury rust. That failed box out at the end of the half, really hurt I thought. I think it was Bufkin who played some solid defense on the guy driving and initially I thought it was Reed's man who got the dunk when he rotated over to attempt a block. But the replay showed Jett's guy slip behind him for the putback. That was a frustrating wasted defensive possession. It seemed like a handful of other times, a loose ball went right by him and he had a bad turnover late in OT as well. I thought that the team has been playing really well without him lately. But if he can get back into the groove with the rest of the guys, that would be a great thing for this team.

It sure looked like Bufkin broke a finger on his right hand. And then he just knocked down two FTs and consecutive 3 pointers. I thought he even passed up another open one shortly after that. Bufkin rules. TOUGHKIN!

Weird question: when was the last time Michigan got a fast break bucket?  When was the last time Michigan dunked? At all? Weird thing I've noticed with this team lately.

TrueBlue2003

Eh, it's more because

1) they don't force turnovers. They're 340th in the country at this.  They had one steal tonight.  To Illinois' nine!

2) the big ten as a conference basically doesn't go for offensive rebounds (Michigan included) to get back on defense, so it's hard for anyone to run off missed shots

3) they have Hunter Dickinson so he's not going to run the floor and he's so good in the half court that you're not going to risk turnovers to run unless it's sure thing

so if you don't force turnovers and teams are getting back on defense on misses, theres not many chances to run.

On another team that plays a different style, I think Dug would be excellent on fast breaks because he's, well, really fast.  If you can beat guys down the floor, that's a good way to not get your shot blocked.

His problem finishing at the basket is that he hasn't learned that when he drives in the half court offense he's going to have a bunch of college rim protectors coming over to block his shot.  He needs to be a lot more selective and crafty.

Spike and Simpson were also very short guys and both of them used to drive in and circle around and either find an open guy or patiently wait for the bigs to get spun around before putting the ball up (or in the case of Simpson he developed an absurd hook shot) or just bring it back out if nothing is there.  Dug just drives straight to the basket and tosses it up which makes it very easy for help to block him.

He just needs to learn how to play with his size at this level.  He's not a natural playmaker / distributor so it's not certain to come, but it's his biggesr area for improvement.  I like a lot of what he's doing otherwise.

Oh well, just another in a line of heartbreaking, frustrating losses.  Would be nice if everyone came back, worked their asses off in the offseason to get quicker and stronger, and made a run at a conference title and potential Final Four.  But we all know that won't happen.

Several observations:

- this team has kind of figured out its identity and the players have sorted through their roles.

- this is a talented enough team playing well at the right time that belongs in the field of the NCAA tourney…I just do not know if they will get a call….the CMU loss hurts bad. I think a win at Indy or two wins in the B10 tourney coupled with their brand gets them in. (Depends on conference upsets).

- been critical of Juwan for awhile now and rightfully so but he has grown on me the last few weeks - appears to have better self control and seems more relaxed. The issue is it takes him sometimes too long to figure out his team and it stunts their success.

- if Purdue gets the nod for a #1 seed, they should be on high upset alert in the opening round - the league is so down and the Boilermakers are very average at times.

If it’s the right #16 and a certain set of circumstances happens then absolutely….Princeton handled Alonzo Mourning fairly well in a one-point loss in 1989….….my overwhelming point I am trying to make is they are not a traditional powerhouse #1 seed if they get it…not scary at all.

Michigan had a 7-point lead with 100 seconds remaining in the first OT. Both teams got 3 offensive possessions in that 100 seconds. Of those 6 possessions, Michigan needed just one to be successful and they would be positioned in the tournament right now. And they went 0-for-6 instead. So many games like that this year.

9-1 in steals. Wow. The game preview talked about how Illinois was down their point guard. So we didn’t full court press at all. The defense was atrocious, again. Dug got way too many minutes. It was just a bad matchup for him with all of Illinois’ size. That forced Kobe onto a big wing who took advantage. 14 points and +12 for Ty Rodgers was the difference. Meanwhile, our bench went 2-12. I still can’t believe Wisconsin is ahead of us in the tourney pecking order. A 3 game advantage in conference should mean something.

Stringer Bell

March 2nd, 2023 at 11:51 PM ^

That's what happens when you do something in the nonconference.  Wisconsin beat a darn good Marquette team and another potential tournament team in USC while avoiding any bad losses.  Michigan meanwhile got blown out by a bubble team in ASU, blew all their chances at half-decent wins including over some pretty mediocre teams like UNC, and lost to a CMU team ranked near the bottom of D1.  Michigan is exactly in the position they belong in.

DennisFranklinDaMan

I thought people were a little harsh on Dickinson earlier on. I agree he seemed slightly less motivated when he was surrounded by mooks who couldn't block out or ... beat CMU. But he seems re-energized and recommitted by this late season revival, and damn the man played hard today.

Pulling that much weight up and down the court for 40+ minutes with guys just *hanging* off him and beating on him, and still going for 29 or whatever, plus 16 rebounds? He's a stud.

Durham Blue

Yep.  Dickinson is team MVP, again.  Think how bad we would be this season without him.  If I had to nitpick and name one thing he needs to improve -- turnovers.  He had a handful of turnovers in the first half and I found myself dropping F bombs every time.  But like he's done in so many games he seems to always makes up for his turnovers by putting the team on his shoulders down the stretch and keeping us competitive.  He's a great player.

Beating a dead horse, but one word for this game and season.

ADMISSIONS

I'm not saying this is right or wrong but this is the price we pay for being Michigan. If you're only a M sports fan it likely cost us a B1G title and deep run in the tournament, if your an academic purist you are ignoring this.

In the grand scheme I care far more about the a academic reputation of my alma mater than I do about trying to land the shiniest athletic recruit or transfer... and it didn’t stop us from having amazing football, basketball and hockey seasons in years past either.

We *can* have both - and far too many people try to blame ademics as a crutch for other problems.

Did Seth break down exactly what happened with Shannon such that he went to Illinois instead of Michigan? I feel like this was explained in detail on the blog once (or more than once) but I can't remember. Anyway, is it simply that Illinois was more flexible in how they would allow him to make up certain credits when he got to their campus? Not to reopen a topic that does seem like a dead horse...

Seeing him shred us off the dribble last night was just brutal, needless to say. Highlighted that we could use his slashing offensive game and also use his defense in stopping that kind of game. Damn.

jdraman

No it was never carefully examined here from my recollection. Seth has a pretty clear axe to grind and allows his personal experience to cloud his judgement IMO. Not saying that Michigan's transfer requirements aren't difficult in some regards, but this blog likes to act like Michigan is the only place it's difficult to transfer in to. Shannon wasn't able to transfer to Michigan because Texas Tech refused to allow him to finish his degree there. Michigan is not the only school that wouldn't allow Shannon to transfer basically an entirely completed to degree without losing multiple semesters worth of credit. That is a common thing across many academic institutions.

The Deer Hunter

March 3rd, 2023 at 2:34 PM ^

Not exactly. Texas Tech did not prevent him from finishing his degree there, it's not like he was expelled. They simply said if you're not coming back we need your scholarship as we need to fill your spot. Shannon could have paid for the summer classes on his own. I don't blame TT on this one.

TrueBlue2003

March 3rd, 2023 at 2:54 PM ^

Also, I think the distinction should be made that it is not that Michigan wouldn't let him transfer.

They would have let him transfer but they wouldn't have accepted some of his credits towards an undergrad degree because Michigan only accepts credits for courses which they have an equivalent course offered.  So if you're trying to transfer credit for underwater basketweaving, Michigan won't take those credits because they don't have an underwater basketweaving course.

The way through that was to get the degree from TTU and enroll as a grad student and then he wouldn't have needed to transfer any undergrad credits.  He'd be starting a grad program fresh.

So Shannon could have still come, he just would have had something more like junior standing and would have been further from obtaining his degree and he didn't want to do that is my understanding. Because Illinois said, sure, we'll take those credits (unclear whether they had equivalent courses or were willing to make the exceptions that Michigan admissions does not).

The Mother of All Wudda Cudda Shudda Games. Not mentioned in variety of posts..Illinois bench 8-16..16 pts..Michigan bench 2-12 ..9 pts..5 pts fts....Illinois seemed to have a million hard drives to the rim while Michigan rarely does that, different styles I suppose but maybe that's why they created 6 more fouls and made 9 more FTs.

Glad the team has improved down the stretch, and I hope they keep Bufkin for one more year. They did miss some hustle plays in this game, which hurt them.

Side note, every team loses players to injury and transfer. Michigan isn’t uniquely hampered, so I think a bit silly to keep saying Juwan was dealt a bad hand. You have the guys you have not some imaginary version.

March 3rd, 2023 at 7:49 AM ^

I don't think it's an excuse but fans also shouldn't completely dismiss how different this team would look (and play) had they not lost a multi-year college starter in Llewellyn s PG and had gotten Shannon (who wanted to come to UM) instead of freshman Dug and whatever minutes would have gone to Shannon.  Yes, Shannon probably stymies Bufkin's development a bit but his inclusion on the team would have been nice.

And yeah, losing good players hurts a team.  I looked at MSU with and without Malik Hall, who's been in and out of the lineup due to injury, and MSU is 12-6 with him on the floor and 6-5 without.  That's a big deal.

I'm not going to say UM is a championship team with Shannon and Llewellyn but when teams struggle it oftentimes is because of injuries and inexperience.  UM suffered both this year and so ignoring that as "part of the game" misses valuable context.

los barcos

March 3rd, 2023 at 3:13 PM ^

Yes, agree. It's not to excuse Juwann's performance but to put it into context.  Here's a list of players that realistically could/should have been on this team:

  • Diabte
  • Houston
  • Frankie
  • Llewywan
  • Shannon

Every year, you would expect a transfer or two, maybe a guy or two declaring for the pros early, maybe an injury - but to have all of those coming up snake eyes is more than just your regular ol turnover.  That's a confluence of factors - most of which were out of your control - that left the team totally shorthanded, and if just one of those flips I think we're having a different conversation about the team's bubble-status today.
