Michigan 80, UCF 58
Michigan played an awful defensive first half, took forever to get it going on offense, and finished their game against a solid UCF team with only one starter scoring double-digit points. The team's leading scorer entering the game, Isaiah Livers, scuffled to five points on nine shots. Franz Wagner only played 16 minutes because of early foul trouble. The Wolverines trailed by as many as 12.
UCF needed a 12-2 run against the end of M's bench to whittle the final margin to 22.
Wait, what?
The turnaround began with the insertion of the bench unit. Chaundee Brown entered for Wagner when the latter picked up his second foul less than five minutes after the tip. Hunter Dickinson replaced Austin Davis a few minutes later. When Mike Smith committed an unforced turnover, Brandon Johns came in for him. The final piece: Juwan Howard yanked Isaiah Livers shortly after he got his pocket picked at halfcourt for a UCF layup and put in freshman ball of energy Terrance Williams.
Brandon Johns gave M a spark off the bench [Campredon]
Before the shift change, Michigan had been a disjointed mess on both ends of the floor. UCF had their choice between layups and open threes. The Wolverines were 5/16 from the floor when Williams checked in; the Knights were 11/16. Williams immediately drove hard at the rim, absorbed contact, and converted an and-one.
It was an entirely different game from there. Michigan closed the half on a 20-6 run, shooting 11-for-16 with no turnovers while holding UCF to a mere 2-for-11 from the field. Dickinson made all four of his shots and dominated the paint; Williams tied the big man for the team lead at the half with eight points; Brown had seven, including a three assisted by Johns, who also had a bucket, two rebounds, a steal, and a block in the opening stanza.
Despite the awful start, Michigan went into the tunnel up four. Wagner drove for a bucket on the opening possession of the second half. Upset Watch quickly morphed into Extended KenPom Time. Helped by Dickinson taking a bigger share of the minutes, the Wolverines solved UCF's frequent changeups from man to zone, creating a series of open looks that largely benefited Brown, who knocked down three more three-pointers to finish with a team-high 18 points.
Big Dunkinson [Campredon]
With Wagner and Livers picking up their defensive effort and overall play, the other two bench stars weren't needed to do much in the second half. Eli Brooks played his part stabilizing the team at the point while Smith took a back seat to the hot hand and energetic defense of Brown.
If we can stretch the definition of a "run" to include a 25-minute period of time, Michigan went of a 63-21 run from the time Williams entered the game in the first half to when he hit a free throw with 3:41 remaining. By that point Williams was joined on the court by Jaron Faulds, Jace Howard, Zeb Jackson, and Adrien Nunez.
That's the kind of depth we like to see. Michigan now sits at 4-0 and hopes to host NC State, which canceled their game scheduled for Saturday because of a positive COVID test in the program, on Wednesday night for their final non-conference game.

Dre Fuller with the -34. Just, wow.

Seemed like the refs had a quick whistle the first half.

I do not remember ever seeing (HS) tape of Mr. Williams being this bundle of high energy...in fact it was the opposite-a skilled but measured grinder. This young man may end up being quite the deal.
December 6th, 2020 at 8:01 PM ^
If we get Williams for 4 years, I'm very excited to see what he turns into as an upperclassman
December 6th, 2020 at 8:07 PM ^
He's likely a 4 year player but he'll be a great glue guy. I think he'll be a captain when all is said and done. He's a tweener and doesn't have one elite skill set yet Juwan trust him to play him significant minutes at SF/PF and could someday play small ball C once he get his experience.
December 6th, 2020 at 9:04 PM ^
I don't think he's exactly the same type of player but he kind of reminds me of Draymond Green in that he doesn't really fit any player archetype super well but just does a lot of little things well and finds ways to contribute. The "little things guy" is a bit of a cliche, but Williams actually does seem to be that kind of guy.
December 6th, 2020 at 10:49 PM ^
I thought the same thing! Just does everything well but doesn't pop out as elite in any one category.
Williams does seem like a good dude and not a head case like Draymond so he's got that going for him!
December 7th, 2020 at 1:00 AM ^
Draymond Green is actually an underrated passer and is an elite defender despite being 6'7" but his long arms helped. One thing you noticed from Draymond is he is a great facilitator and initiator on offense which is something that Williams does not have.
Williams is a perfect 4 year player because he doesn't have the size that NBA covet for a PF yet he'll be fine at SF/PF/C. Once he gets more comfortable in college level, he'll be a difference maker for the team in many ways other than scoring.
December 7th, 2020 at 11:01 AM ^
Yeah Williams doesn't have Green's size but he seems to have that same level of high basketball IQ and instinct. That's high praise I know, but he reads the floor exceptionally for a freshman on both ends of the floor. He's always making the right pass/cut on offense and the right rotations defensively. I think he does overhelp a bit at times, but for a freshman to be at that point is pretty amazing.
December 6th, 2020 at 11:24 PM ^
So basically another MAAR. I'm seriously ok with that. MAAR was one of my favorites. Always played with a passion and was just generally awesome. If he's like that, then hell yeah!
December 7th, 2020 at 11:43 AM ^
He's nothing like MAAR who was a steady, even keeled guard that could get to the hoop without turning it over.
Williams is a high-energy wing that defends, rebounds and plays bigger than he is.
The only commonality is that he's likely also a 4 year player.

Corliss Williamson
December 6th, 2020 at 10:51 PM ^
Agree! I was one of the guys who saw him live in a couple high school games and would never have described him as a bundle of energy. I'm guessing the coaches have told him his key to playing time is to be a spark off the bench, and he is listening. He seems to developed a ton of confidence in his first four games - now he's shooting threes, taking the ball up the court, crashing the boards and taking it to the rack.
Both he and Dickinson have far exceeded the expectations I had after watching a couple of their high school games live. Fun stuff.
December 6th, 2020 at 7:25 PM ^
Wonder when Dickinson will start, the offense is bad nearly every game when he isn't in the game
December 6th, 2020 at 7:27 PM ^
After we lose one when we get too big of a deficit.
December 7th, 2020 at 2:21 AM ^
This is the most likely scenario.
December 6th, 2020 at 7:31 PM ^
It doesn't really matter who starts but he and Brown are clearly two of Michigan's best players so neither one should be spending much time on the bench.
December 6th, 2020 at 7:48 PM ^
It might not matter who starts if he didn't play them for 7-8 straight minutes. Brooks would be just fine coming off the bench and provide a spark. Id like to see what a lineup of HD, Livers, Wagner, Brown and Smith would start out like. You are still bringing in energy off the bench with Davis, Johns, Williams and Brooks.
December 6th, 2020 at 8:37 PM ^
Why do ppl want to bench Brooks? He was a +19 tonight. Him and Chaundee should start perfect compliment on both ends of the floor. Smith should be the spark plug off the bench.
December 6th, 2020 at 9:32 PM ^
For me, it's not about benching Brooks as much as it is he isn't a true pg so Smith is better suited for that role. Comparing Brown and Brooks is why I want to make the switch. Id like to see a certain lineup to start the game instead of the one we have now. This isn't a slight against Brooks at all.
December 7th, 2020 at 1:03 AM ^
I think Brown would be better served coming off the bench instead of starting. It fits the team a lot better. Brooks is fine as starter and would rather keep him there instead of running the 2nd unit. Brown can come in for Brooks, Wagner, Livers off the bench as opposed to being somewhat limited for Brooks when he has to come in for Smith or whoever is at SG. Sometimes it's better to have a good player being the 1st off the bench for lineup flexibility purpose and better gameflow.
December 7th, 2020 at 11:52 AM ^
Yeah, but Smith's defense is a huge liability. That outweighs what he brings to the offense as a "true pg".
Their best lineup is HD, Livers, Wagner, Brown and Brooks. HD alleviates a lot of shot creation duties that a pg might otherwise need to take on. You can run the offense through him and Wagner as a secondary option without needing a ball dominant pg.
In any case, Michigan is seriously short on guards so there's 25+ min for Brown, Smith, and Brooks as they rotate.
December 6th, 2020 at 8:04 PM ^
Davis starting definitely matters. We always have a slow start until Hunter comes into the game and against better teams, we may not be able to recover if the other team takes the lead early
December 6th, 2020 at 8:35 PM ^
Hunter will earn his starts in B1G season.
December 6th, 2020 at 11:47 PM ^
He makes for one hell of a sixth man, though. Davis has some weight to him, so while he might have lead feet and limited offense, it must really suck for opposing centers to have him lean on them for the first 5-10 minutes of the game and then have to defend a fresh Dickinson.
Having said all that, it's a tad weird having our best player fill the sixth man role. I know, it's only been four games, but I think it's pretty clear Dickinson is our best player—he's such a physical mismatch for most centers and he just has a knack for getting buckets to fall. The spacing of opposing defenses changes completely when he comes in, allowing our wings to get open perimeter shots and lanes to the basket.
December 7th, 2020 at 12:17 AM ^
Livers is shooting 53% from 3 and plays very good defense. I'd say he's been the best player.
December 7th, 2020 at 8:37 AM ^
"Best player" can be subjective, but thru 4 games, I think Hunter has been our most valuable player, as in most critical to success.
December 7th, 2020 at 11:57 AM ^
That's probably the case considering the alternative at his position (Davis). Livers is probably the better player but there's less of a dropoff when he's not in the game because Michigan has a lot of good wings in Johns, Brown, Wagner and even Williams.
December 6th, 2020 at 7:31 PM ^
Love the energy Johns and Williams bring off the bench. Williams seems fearless out there, wish he could donate some confidence to Zeb Jackson. Terrance reminds me of another Williams from the DMV area - the Junkyard Dog, Jerome Williams.
December 6th, 2020 at 7:39 PM ^
The two freshmen are top notch. Though Dickinson is 20, I cannot recall the last time we had such high performance so early. To put in perspective, remember how ineffective Mo was.
And how many years of eligibility do we get of Brown and Smith. One each ?
December 6th, 2020 at 7:51 PM ^
They both technically can come back. Id take both back in a heart beat. Unless Franz starts to turn it on this season, he looks like he needs to come back as well.
December 6th, 2020 at 9:10 PM ^
I'm pretty sure both Brown and Smith are out of eligibility. This year is it. At least, that's what UMHoops has and I can't see how either would get another year from a rules perspective.
December 6th, 2020 at 9:17 PM ^
CoVid year. Eligibility isn’t counting for anyone, meaning they can both return.
December 6th, 2020 at 8:53 PM ^
Wasn’t Iggy pretty much fully developed from the jump? Think he was a 20-year old freshman, too.
December 6th, 2020 at 10:52 PM ^
Good call. I've almost forgotten about his career here. I don't blame him one bit for leaving, he had to do what was best for him. But I really really really would have loved for him to come back and build on his freshman year
December 6th, 2020 at 7:58 PM ^
The game completely turned when I left the live game thread.
If that makes them play better, I shall ban myself from the live threads the rest of the season.

If you do join the live threads, can you at least tell us when you are leaving?
I don't want to miss the good stuff.

Don't worry nobody was bad luck. I just happened to turn the game on when we were down 20-28. My bad for not tuning in at rip-off!
December 6th, 2020 at 8:00 PM ^
Johns deserves some of Davis' minutes
December 6th, 2020 at 8:11 PM ^
While obviously the early deficit wasn't great, I do like that Michigan can go to it's bench and bring out guys who can contribute effectively in spurts. I'm fine if Dickinson started but Howard isn't dumb and probably realizes that every freshman hits a wall in terms of the grind of season play, especially this year when it's going to get packed quick. So keeping him relatively fresh and rotating with Davis, Johns, etc. is a good idea.
It does feel like Wagner is scuttling more than I expected offensively. It's still early but that's been a bit of a surprise.
December 6th, 2020 at 10:47 PM ^
Yeah Howard knows his future starters and those guys on the bench should be jonesing every time to get in the game and push the lead.
And the starters won't want to be shown up, so a few small doses of coopetition amongst the team is healthy.
December 6th, 2020 at 8:11 PM ^
I think we need more bestial roar from Chaundee. It strikes fear into the enemy and empowers our guys. Kinda like a warrior shout from World of Warcraft.
December 6th, 2020 at 8:32 PM ^
Great mix of players. Juan playing tons of combinations to find chemistry. Bench is deep.
December 6th, 2020 at 10:49 PM ^
At this point in time, as far as I am concerned, Juwan can play any lineup he wants to and distribute the minutes as he wishes. I think he is doing a great job. Seems to be a pretty good recruiter with an eye for talent I might add.
December 6th, 2020 at 11:22 PM ^
What?? A coach that makes adjustments when shit's not working? Never heard of that one... (yeah, I know, Beilein did too but still, would be nice if the football coach would)
December 7th, 2020 at 11:34 AM ^
To be fair, we don't have backups who can play corner or DT either, ugg
