Chaundee Brown led Michigan with 18 points [Marc-Gregor Campredon]

Michigan played an awful defensive first half, took forever to get it going on offense, and finished their game against a solid UCF team with only one starter scoring double-digit points. The team's leading scorer entering the game, Isaiah Livers, scuffled to five points on nine shots. Franz Wagner only played 16 minutes because of early foul trouble. The Wolverines trailed by as many as 12.

UCF needed a 12-2 run against the end of M's bench to whittle the final margin to 22.

Wait, what?

The turnaround began with the insertion of the bench unit. Chaundee Brown entered for Wagner when the latter picked up his second foul less than five minutes after the tip. Hunter Dickinson replaced Austin Davis a few minutes later. When Mike Smith committed an unforced turnover, Brandon Johns came in for him. The final piece: Juwan Howard yanked Isaiah Livers shortly after he got his pocket picked at halfcourt for a UCF layup and put in freshman ball of energy Terrance Williams.

Before the shift change, Michigan had been a disjointed mess on both ends of the floor. UCF had their choice between layups and open threes. The Wolverines were 5/16 from the floor when Williams checked in; the Knights were 11/16. Williams immediately drove hard at the rim, absorbed contact, and converted an and-one.

It was an entirely different game from there. Michigan closed the half on a 20-6 run, shooting 11-for-16 with no turnovers while holding UCF to a mere 2-for-11 from the field. Dickinson made all four of his shots and dominated the paint; Williams tied the big man for the team lead at the half with eight points; Brown had seven, including a three assisted by Johns, who also had a bucket, two rebounds, a steal, and a block in the opening stanza.

Despite the awful start, Michigan went into the tunnel up four. Wagner drove for a bucket on the opening possession of the second half. Upset Watch quickly morphed into Extended KenPom Time. Helped by Dickinson taking a bigger share of the minutes, the Wolverines solved UCF's frequent changeups from man to zone, creating a series of open looks that largely benefited Brown, who knocked down three more three-pointers to finish with a team-high 18 points.

With Wagner and Livers picking up their defensive effort and overall play, the other two bench stars weren't needed to do much in the second half. Eli Brooks played his part stabilizing the team at the point while Smith took a back seat to the hot hand and energetic defense of Brown.

If we can stretch the definition of a "run" to include a 25-minute period of time, Michigan went of a 63-21 run from the time Williams entered the game in the first half to when he hit a free throw with 3:41 remaining. By that point Williams was joined on the court by Jaron Faulds, Jace Howard, Zeb Jackson, and Adrien Nunez.

That's the kind of depth we like to see. Michigan now sits at 4-0 and hopes to host NC State, which canceled their game scheduled for Saturday because of a positive COVID test in the program, on Wednesday night for their final non-conference game.

I do not remember ever seeing (HS) tape of Mr. Williams being this bundle of high energy...in fact it was the opposite-a skilled but measured grinder. This young man may end up being quite the deal.

He's likely a 4 year player but he'll be a great glue guy. I think he'll be a captain when all is said and done. He's a tweener and doesn't have one elite skill set yet Juwan trust him to play him significant minutes at SF/PF and could someday play small ball C once he get his experience.

I don't think he's exactly the same type of player but he kind of reminds me of Draymond Green in that he doesn't really fit any player archetype super well but just does a lot of little things well and finds ways to contribute. The "little things guy" is a bit of a cliche, but Williams actually does seem to be that kind of guy.

Draymond Green is actually an underrated passer and is an elite defender despite being 6'7" but his long arms helped. One thing you noticed from Draymond is he is a great facilitator and initiator on offense which is something that Williams does not have.

Williams is a perfect 4 year player because he doesn't have the size that NBA covet for a PF yet he'll be fine at SF/PF/C. Once he gets more comfortable in college level, he'll be a difference maker for the team in many ways other than scoring.

Yeah Williams doesn't have Green's size but he seems to have that same level of high basketball IQ and instinct. That's high praise I know, but he reads the floor exceptionally for a freshman on both ends of the floor. He's always making the right pass/cut on offense and the right rotations defensively. I think he does overhelp a bit at times, but for a freshman to be at that point is pretty amazing.

Agree! I was one of the guys who saw him live in a couple high school games and would never have described him as a bundle of energy. I'm guessing the coaches have told him his key to playing time is to be a spark off the bench, and he is listening. He seems to developed a ton of confidence in his first four games - now he's shooting threes, taking the ball up the court, crashing the boards and taking it to the rack.

Both he and Dickinson have far exceeded the expectations I had after watching a couple of their high school games live. Fun stuff.

It might not matter who starts if he didn't play them for 7-8 straight minutes. Brooks would be just fine coming off the bench and provide a spark. Id like to see what a lineup of HD, Livers, Wagner, Brown and Smith would start out like. You are still bringing in energy off the bench with Davis, Johns, Williams and Brooks.

I think Brown would be better served coming off the bench instead of starting. It fits the team a lot better. Brooks is fine as starter and would rather keep him there instead of running the 2nd unit. Brown can come in for Brooks, Wagner, Livers off the bench as opposed to being somewhat limited for Brooks when he has to come in for Smith or whoever is at SG.  Sometimes it's better to have a good player being the 1st off the bench for lineup flexibility purpose and better gameflow.

Yeah, but Smith's defense is a huge liability.  That outweighs what he brings to the offense as a "true pg".

Their best lineup is HD, Livers, Wagner, Brown and Brooks.  HD alleviates a lot of shot creation duties that a pg might otherwise need to take on.  You can run the offense through him and Wagner as a secondary option without needing a ball dominant pg.

In any case, Michigan is seriously short on guards so there's 25+ min for Brown, Smith, and Brooks as they rotate.

He makes for one hell of a sixth man, though. Davis has some weight to him, so while he might have lead feet and limited offense, it must really suck for opposing centers to have him lean on them for the first 5-10 minutes of the game and then have to defend a fresh Dickinson.

Having said all that, it's a tad weird having our best player fill the sixth man role. I know, it's only been four games, but I think it's pretty clear Dickinson is our best player—he's such a physical mismatch for most centers and he just has a knack for getting buckets to fall. The spacing of opposing defenses changes completely when he comes in, allowing our wings to get open perimeter shots and lanes to the basket.

Love the energy Johns and Williams bring off the bench. Williams seems fearless out there, wish he could donate some confidence to Zeb Jackson. Terrance reminds me of another Williams from the DMV area - the Junkyard Dog, Jerome Williams.

The two freshmen are top notch.  Though Dickinson is 20, I cannot recall the last time we had such high performance so early. To put in perspective, remember how ineffective Mo was.

And how many years of eligibility do we get of Brown and Smith.  One each ?

While obviously the early deficit wasn't great, I do like that Michigan can go to it's bench and bring out guys who can contribute effectively in spurts.  I'm fine if Dickinson started but Howard isn't dumb and probably realizes that every freshman hits a wall in terms of the grind of season play, especially this year when it's going to get packed quick.  So keeping him relatively fresh and rotating with Davis, Johns, etc. is a good idea.

It does feel like Wagner is scuttling more than I expected offensively.  It's still early but that's been a bit of a surprise.

At this point in time, as far as I am concerned, Juwan can play any lineup he wants to and distribute the minutes as he wishes. I think he is doing a great job. Seems to be a pretty good recruiter with an eye for talent I might add.
