We saw JJ's legs and his right arm this week [Patrick Barron]

Michigan 35, UNLV 7 Comment Count

Alex.Drain September 9th, 2023 at 6:49 PM

Another week, another overmatched opponent that Michigan completely manhandled. Last week it was East Carolina, this week it was the UNLV Rebels. Over the course of four quarters, Michigan steamrolled UNLV and new head coach Barry Odom, using overwhelming pizzaz on the defensive line to demolish the Rebels' pass protection and run blocking over and over again, while JJ McCarthy was again nearly perfect through the air. Michigan logged five sacks as a team, McCarthy was 22/25 for 278 yards for 2 TDs and 0 INTs, the Maize & Blue outgained the (other) Scarlet & Gray 492-229, and won the contest 35-7.

The first half was a simple, dominating romp. UNLV got a couple first downs on their opening possession but the drive fizzled out after Braiden McGregor TFL'd a running play on 1st down, setting the Rebels behind the sticks, a predicament they wouldn't recover from. Michigan took the football at their own 20 after a punt into the end zone, and marched right down the field thanks to the awesome powers of McCarthy. He got it going with a dump-off to Blake Corum, who exploited the space provided by UNLV's linebackers dropping incredibly deep, to gain 20. On 3rd & 8, McCarthy connected with Tyler Morris for 16, then hit Roman Wilson on a play-action strike for 25. Now in the red zone, Blake Corum paid it off, picking up a 3rd & 7 on his own and then rumbling into the end zone from two yards out on the next play.

From that point on, Michigan's defensive front was a wrecking ball being swung into the UNLV offensive line, crushing them play after play and limiting any ability for their opposition to function as an offense. UNLV's next two drives went for a combined -4 yards, one total first down gained. Derrick Moore ended the first drive with a Thundersack that saw the LT barely place a hand on him, while the second drive saw Jaylen Harrell collect two sacks cleaning up pressure created by blitzers, Quinten Johnson on the first sack and Michael Barrett on the second.

[Bryan Fuller]

In between, Michigan just kept moving the ball completely unabated. Michigan went 75 yards in eleven plays on their second drive, Corum getting it started on the ground before McCarthy used his legs to navigate the pocket and find Tyler Morris to convert a 3rd & 5 around midfield, just before crossing the line of scrimmage. JJ picked up another third down on a throw to AJ Barner, then a McCarthy keeper down the sideline got Michigan to the two. Corum finished it off right up the gut for a TD. 14-0.

Michigan's third drive was moving with similar efficiency until our weekly mindnumbingly stupid display of play-calling stubbornness nixed it in the red zone. Just before things unraveled, McCarthy made arguably the throw of his career thus far, a bullet in between three defenders, including a mystified UNLV corner who was sure he had an INT. Instead, it was completed to Cornelius Johnson to get Michigan down to the 26. After that, Michigan did not let McCarthy attempt another pass, running four straight plays, including on 3rd & 6 and 4th & 3. The 4th down run for Blake Corum was stopped a yard short and Michigan turned it over on downs. Why Michigan did not let the fire-breathing dragon that was JJ McCarthy attempt one play-action pass in that situation, we will never know.

That drive didn't end up mattering of course. UNLV did pick up a couple first downs on their next drive but then ran into pass-rush hell again. Kenneth Grant and Kris Jenkins brought Doug Brumfield down yet again to set up third and long, a pass that initially looked complete before Mikey Sainristil managed to dislodge it as the two players hit the ground. Michigan got the ball back and embarked on one more TD drive before halftime.

[Patrick Barron]

McCarthy did have his first incompletion on this drive, coming with 3:51 to go in the second quarter, but he was right back on his brilliance. Michigan converted 3rd & 7 and 3rd & 6 via McCarthy's arm and then McCarthy's legs got them to the 13 yard line, a scramble and then a designed QB draw. Facing 1st & 10 with 27 seconds left in the half, McCarthy hit Roman Wilson on an inside route and the Hawaiian galloped into the end zone. 21-0. UNLV kneeled it down and went to the locker room having been outgained 280-40 in the first half.

Michigan got the ball out of halftime and quickly went three-and-out, the first punt of the day for Tommy Doman. McCarthy's 3rd & 2 pass was batted down by an unblocked blitzer (LB Jackson Woodard), giving UNLV a stop. The Rebels couldn't capitalize on their defense though, as UNLV went three-and-out themselves after Brumfield's 3rd down scramble was brought down by Mason Graham short of the sticks. Michigan took the ball and needed just three plays to find the end zone, the final play being a long catch-and-run for Roman Wilson, 47 yards in total from McCarthy (the broadcast noted that 47 is the number of McCarthy childhood friend/UNLV defensive lineman Ryan Keeler, who tragically died earlier this year).

UNLV's best drive of the game followed but they were still unable to score points. The drive was enabled by a Michigan mistake, Rayshaun Benny rushing the passer on an incomplete 3rd down pass and the Rebels capitalized for a brief moment. An option pitch got UNLV into Michigan territory but the drive ran out of steam on 3rd & 3 and 4th & 3. They had a running lane on a sweep play on 3rd down (an uncalled hold against McGregor though), but the running back fell over short of the line to gain. They attempted to go read-option on 4th & 3, but Brumfield's pull was swallowed up and UNLV turned it over.

[Bryan Fuller]

Both teams traded three-and-outs on their next drives before McCarthy led his final scoring drive of the day. Corum started the drive with a long run, then McCarthy found Cornelius Johnson over the middle. That got Michigan to the UNLV 31, which was followed by a beautifully blocked reverse for Johnson that got Michigan to the five. Blake Corum promptly punched it in for his third TD of the day and that was all she wrote for the first team offense. 35-0.

The Rebels got the football and stitched together another decent drive, but it again fell flat in Michigan territory. Michigan's swarming defensive front totally overwhelmed UNLV and more pressure forced an inaccurate throw on 4th & 8 and the ball went to Michigan's second-team offense. Jack Tuttle took the helm of the offense and his first play was a memorable one, a beautiful pull on the zone read, weaving into the open field for a 14 yard gain, but he was then hit out of bounds, going spiraling into the UNLV benches, colliding with equipment and slamming into the brick wall that marks the start of the public seating. A flag was thrown for the late hit, but Tuttle was okay. Davis Warren came into the game, but threw an interception to UNLV nickel Jerrae Williams (you may have remembered him as the Dangerman if you read FFFF).

The fourth quarter was pure garbage tie, an opportunity for Michigan's reserves to make their mark on the game. Jayden Denegal took over for Davis Warren at QB (Denegal had a great deep ball with about a minute ago), while CJ Stokes took over at RB and the second-team offensive line took the field. The defense retained more of their first teamers but by the halfway point of the fourth quarter, it was almost all twos. UNLV's backups were able to move the ball some on Michigan's second-team defense, using QB rushing plays and a few timely passes to enter Michigan territory on two straight drives. Their second found paydirt when Jordan Yonge-Humphrey navigated his way into the end zone for a 20 yard score, getting UNLV on the board and representing the second consecutive Saturday where a Michigan opponent foiled the shutout within the last three minutes of the contest.

That "1-0 as an interim head coach" feeling [Barron]

For Michigan, this was another extremely easy win and advances their record to 2-0 on the year. No drama and another indicator that their returning starter QB has made the proverbial Leap. The first team defense was smothering and the result was a solid victory. Both Jay Harbaugh and Mike Hart are now 1-0 as interim head coaches, Harbaugh taking the first half and Hart the second with Jim Harbaugh suspended. The head coach will be suspended one more week, as OC Sherrone Moore will take the helm next Saturday for what should be another easy win. Michigan brings Bowling Green to the Big House at 7:30 pm EST, a game that will be broadcast on BTN.

Difficult to be any more enthusiastic about JJ this year. The only negatives one can produce are just feelingsball “Michigan regresses a lot after good starts” type stuff that even Eeyores like me can’t take very seriously.

The numbers for Edwards and Corum aren’t gaudy yet, but honestly that’s a function of everything else being so good and the clock rules. There just aren’t that many plays available with which to do things.

Because JJ hits everything. Only two games in, but so far you have to be excited about what he is doing. And, of course, about the team in general.

Only thing we haven’t seen from JJ is a true deep shot, but I’m sure that will come. I actually thought he had a guy behind the whole defense on the first completion to Corum.

A little disappointed we haven’t seen more out of Edwards yet, but really just because I’d love to see him hit 1000 yards this year.

When playing overmatched teams, one can nitpick, and I would pick these nits:

— O line has to run block better, especially for Edwards. They have work to do; seem not quite in sync yet, to say the least

— As Brian noted in UFR from last week: cued to it, I looked for it, and to my (you can not overestimate how untrained) untrained eye, receivers blocking was bad again this game

— Also seems to my same thoroughly untrained eye that both Corum & Edwards, but especially Edwards, seem hesitant still — still more rust to knock off, or that’s lack of confidence in new O line yet

— And we need a QB2. I was high on  Warren from little we saw him last year, but he was bad in Spring and has looked bad in 2 appearances this year. Wish Tuttle had not gotten dinged. We need to see who can be backup QB

— Ditto for RB3. Maybe it’s Mullings? Brian loved his game 1; I’m curious if he likes game 2. I don’t recall seeing anything of note

All that said: 2-0 as easily as can be and JJ and, for most part, the D too, look all world. All of the above are clearly nits. But, as I said, what else you gonna do against UNLV but pick those

Agree on all points.  One can’t emphasize enough the importance of having a number 2 qb ready to go in all facets of the game.  Our O-line really needs to run block better and open some holes.  I know they were loading at least 8-9 in the box on nearly every play but as we move into the regular season, we’ll be facing teams who can play man better as well as top the run.  D was solid and the kicking game was ok though our FG are still question marks.  Special teams have some tidying up to do.  Recognize that these are really warm up games and it is difficult to assess how quickly things are gelling together.  It’s really great seeing JJ maturing and making good decisions.

Hmm. In the Trenches, Jansen interview with Hart after the game, said exactly this: Corum improved from game one, but needs to be more decisive, is getting there/will get there, where he was last year. Corum in his interview said the same. I guess they didn’t watch the game either? Corum was better, and at a very high level absolutely, but not at full Corum yet

Running backs haven't had too many holes to run through in the first two games, but there were a few for Corum today.  It feels to me like they're all dancing a bit too much when the holes aren't there (including Mullings today) - hopefully the oline will continue improve over the next 2-3 games and give the RBs more opportunity to live up to their billing.

Feed JJ 15 pounds of sandwiches, and there are several NFL teams that would take him today.

 Nice gamer as usual, Alex.

Get everyone some reps and keep improving.

I know you aren't making fun of Ohio State's schedule are you?  Who did MI play last year and this year in the non-conference?  I think we can all agree that 2024 can't come soon enough with the addition of USC, UCLA, Oregon, and Washington.  There will be more meaningful games and less of the ECU, UNLV, YSU, Hawaii, UConn teams of the world.  There is no clear cut dominant team right now.  Every team has problems.

MI was a 36 point favorite over UNLV.  OSU was a 42 point favorite over YSU.  Both teams did not cover and I am willing to bet some MI and OSU fans were pissed that neither team covered.  MI and OSU both did not cover the spread either last week against ECU and Indiana.  But hey we are both 2-0 and that's a good thing right?  The best thing about being 2-0 is a chance to go  3-0.

I don't know if you were alive when MI played Div. 1AA App State in Ann Arbor and App St. pulled out the upset.

The sequence where we turned it over on downs was frustrating. Fine with runs, but I would've liked some more creativity in the runs. Also would have been okay giving Turner a field goal rep there.

When you are number 2 and a second loss is the only thing that derails your season what is the motivating factor to play a tougher out of conference schedule? Because some schmuck is bored of playoff seasons? Nah Im trusting the process. LSU and Bama are both playing each other in an elimination game at seasons end if they both go 9-0 from here on out.

Until the expanded playoffs, there is no motivation to play tough OOC opponents, unfortunately. We’re already in the toughest division in the country. I’m hoping scheduling (for all P5 teams) gets more interesting in the future when a single loss isn’t an auto elimination (only SEC teams get one free loss currently).

Yeah hopefully the expansion solves it. In general, I believe college football needs to figure out how to reward teams that challenge themselves. Current model of incentivizing weak opponents to “goal seek” a record is not really fun to watch (in my opinion). I used to be a huge CF fan but have enjoyed NFL games more recently due to every game being competitive (don’t see 30+ point wins every week by half the teams for half the season) .

The only thing that got Ohio State into the playoff last year after losing to MI late in November was that OSU beat a ranked ND team in their season opener.  So playing a ranked team early on helped OSU last year and they came within a field goal of beating #1 Georgia.

With the 12 team playoffs coming next year, losing 1 or two games early in the year will still get you into the playoffs.  This will be good for the fans who get to see real competitive games and not games that are lame and half the fans leave by halftime

JJ looks good. I'd like to see the line gel a bit more and the run game improve on early downs because I'm not a fan of 3rd and 6,7,8, etc. Against these teams that's often a pass for first down. Against better teams that's a tougher ask and more exposure to JJ.

Posts are pointing out that the offensive line simply hasn't been dominant, unlike the last two years. This week the box wasn't loaded against the run nearly as often as last week, and the defenders were undersized.  Bo would not be pleased.  I'm interested to learn who plays once the head coach is making the final decisions.  The idea of Michigan having 10 offensive linemen who are starter quality is not what we are seeing.

I also wonder when Edwards will play as well as he did when he had a broken hand. Has he broken any tackles yet?

JJs mechanics have made a very noticeable improvement IMO. His posture is tall when it should be and his foot placements on throws look very textbook. The kids been doing his work to my eye and deserves praise. The D front looks like a serious unit with good depth. That’s HUGE for a seasons potential. When guys inevitably get dinged up we can weather it. Curious to see the secondary tested by a quality passing game. Not sure where we see that first? WRs need to block better and NOW. That’s a commitment thing IMO and I’m sure film will correct that to some degree.

Was at the game and overall, generally quite pleased. It was 35-0 when it mattered. I trust Mike Hart when he says a big run is just one block better executed. Very happy that Roman Wilson has become a star player. So dangerous and has learned the route-running. Any day that starts with deep dish Sicilian pizza and ends with a Bama loss is a great day.

Main concern is that the 2nd teams are not getting much done. But trust this staff to fix that - 27-1 in regular season since Covid year. Only Georgia can say that.

Yeah.  That's a frustrating thing about college football.  You read up on who is going to play, then different things happen for no apparent reason and nobody tells you why.  The injuries are the most obvious like last year when Nikhai Hill Green was basically week-to-week as far as his injury for the whole season.  There are already several players/starters out this year who get a passing mention as "working through something" from time to time.

All this reminds me of Jabrill Peppers "last game". Here was one of the most eagerly anticipated Michigan players of all time.  The bowl game came to end the year, and at the last second we're told that Peppers might have an injury and won't play.  And he never again played for Michigan. The Rashan Gary story was similar.  Moral:  Do not recruit 5 stars.  For more on this, see Alabama, Ohio State, whose recent seasons have been disappointing despite having top notch recruiting classes every year. Or Michigan basketball.

I don't believe I have ever seen Michigan with a better passing QB in my 45 years of watching UM.  I was skeptical last week.  Maybe he was just having a special day, a one off thing.  But now, after two weeks of the same, I think this is the real thing.  And he even ran the ball once like an actual runner, not a hobbled gazelle.  But I would prefer he stick to passing.  If he is going to run, please slide or go out of bounds and keep them few and far between.  It isn't just that he completes the passes, but he completes them precisely where they need to be to facilitate YAC.  How nice must it be to be in the UM receiving core right now?
