[Gregg Glenn]

Hoops Hello: Gregg Glenn Comment Count

The Wolverines secured the third pledge in the 2022 class today with 4-star forward Gregg Glenn making his commitment to Michigan.

Three of the four services agree that Glenn is a backend 4-star prospect, while Rivals sees him as more of a top-75 prospect. Gregg's stock has declined a bit since the underclassmen years, where he took part in the USA Basketball program and was a top-40 prospect in January 2020. The pandemic robbed evaluators of live viewings in 2020 and large chunks of 2021. A solid, but unspectacular, junior year of HS was followed by an injury-plagued 2021 summer that only saw him play a few weekends while sitting out the critical month of July.

All services sans ESPN list Glenn at 6'7, while the worldwide leader has him at 6'6. There is some variation in terms of weight. Rivals and 247 have Gregg in the 210-25 range, ESPN has him at 220 and EM Scouting goes with 225. At the 2019 Nike Elite 100, he officially weighed in at just under 219 pounds. Based on the eye test and expected natural weight gains over two years, I think its safe to assume Gregg is closer to 230 than 220 at this point.

SCOUTING

Gregg is a playmaking wing/forward that is at his best as a secondary playmaker for others while scoring on straight line drives off the bounce and putbacks.

Physically, he has solid size for a wing/forward at around 6'7 and 230 pounds. He's not a great athlete, but is in the average/above-average tier. Glenn has above-average leaping ability in run + jump scenarios and will probably have a strength advantage for most matchups at the college level. His agility isn't great, but it is adequate.

Offensively, Gregg's best attribute is undoubtedly the ability to create shots for teammates in both half-court and transition settings. You don't find many 6'7 prospects at the college level that can initiate offense in ballscreen action, but Glenn projects to give Michigan that type of player. His passing ability is just as potent posting up or from the FT line area against zone defense, where he's shown the ability to make quick decisions that lead to open shots. In the open court Gregg is adept with hit-ahead passes while also being able to lead the break and find teammates once he forces the defense to cut off his driving lane.

As a scorer, Glenn thrives as a player that can blow-by slower wings or bigs in a straight line from the elbows, the wing or in transition. He's also a good offensive rebounder that will give multiple efforts on the glass and come up with putbacks.

The limiting factor for Gregg is shooting. He's capable of hitting shots beyond the arch, but he hasn't been an efficient shooter during my live viewings. The scouting report is nearly universal in that he's a sub-par perimeter shooter where opposing coaches will live with him taking a jumper if it means keeping him out of the paint.

Defensively, Glenn has flashed some ability at the point of attack. I've seen him stay in front of high-major PG prospects for multiple dribbles on a few occasions. That said, he's not the most agile player and doesn't project as a ball-hawking defender. His off-ball effort can lack at times, with lazy closeouts periodically and a lack of awareness occasionally. But that happens with a lot of HS prospects and I have no doubt Juwan Howard will coach that out of him before he sees the floor in Ann Arbor.

Third party evaluations are scant with the pandemic in tandem Gregg's injury bug. 247 liked the versatility when they saw him in April 2021.

"Glenn is getting pretty strong and has some skill, when he plays inside/out and doesn’t settle for jumpers, he’s very valuable. He didn’t have his best day finishing at the rim, but Glenn has the type of game many programs really like from a four man."

OFFERS

Glenn had a plethora of early offers from the likes of LSU, Georgia, Alabama, Florida State, Maryland and Oklahoma State among others. In the end though, Virginia Tech, Georgia, USF and Iona were the last four standing in addition Michigan.

HIGH SCHOOL

Fort Lauderdale Calvary Christian High School is located just north of Miami. While it hasn't been known as a basketball powerhouse historically, it is becoming talent-laden in recent years. In addition to Gregg, the Eagles have a 4-star juniors Marvel Allen and Carl Cherenfant to accompany 2022 UCF commits Taylor Hendricks and Tyler Hendricks. Calvary Christian figures to be a top-25 program nationally this season.

STATS

Glenn went for 13.8 points, 6.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists per contest during his junior year per Max Preps

PREDICTION BASED ON FLIMSY EVIDENCE

Michigan has great depth at the SF/PF spot, and with that you can expect Gregg to get limited playing time as a freshman. Just how much time will largely depend on how things go with Caleb Houstan and Moussa Diabate. Both are hard to project for NBA purposes for different reasons. Diabate is an NBA-caliber athlete that needs to refine his skills and continue getting stronger. Houstan is projected to be a potent perimeter shotmaker, but lacks the agility and overall athleticism that NBA GMs generally like.

Its probably not far-fetched to project at least one of the Diabate/Houstan duo to return. If that is the case, its going to be nearly impossible for Glenn to nab real minutes during conference play with a forward rotation featuring a returning starter in one of Diabate/Houstan. Terrance Williams, Isaiah Barnes and Will Tschetter will also be vying for rotational minutes, with Jace Howard lurking as well.

On the other hand, if Houstan and Diabate both have successful freshman campaigns and bolt for professional opportunities, you’d likely see Williams get significant minutes at one forward spot. That means Juwan Howard would very likely need a more agile + skilled wing to pair with him. In that scenario, we cannot forget that Kobe Bufkin possibly has the size/length to play the SF spot and Jett Howard will also be in the mix. That would leave Isaiah Barnes, Kobe Bufkin, Jett Howard and Gregg Glenn as potential options. Depending on where Bufkin slots in positionally, Glenn might be able to squeeze in the back of the rotation as a backup wing, but it doesn't appear likely.

In any event, the most likely scenario is a limited role for the 22-23 season, with the emphasis on improving his perimeter shot and Camp Sanderson refining his physique a bit. As a sophomore I think Gregg's role will still be limited. Simply too many pieces that have more natural talent on the roster. Year three is when he will likely emerge as a real rotational piece as a versatile wing that can create shots as a secondary playmaker while generating extra possessions on the offensive glass. By that time the hope is that he's a respectable shooter from three in the low-to-mid 30s.

UPSHOT FOR THE REST OF THE CLASS

It will have Jett Howard in it. That's about the only realistic projection anyone can make at this point. This section is functionally moot with the transfer portal. Every coach I've spoken with prefers the portal for competition level/sample purposes and so it is simply impossible to project with any sort of intelligence.

Is this the first time that a Hello post has been posted BEFORE the first post to the board about the committment? Talk about quick on the trigger!

Is it a point of concern that Glenn has been dropping in the rankings when the trend has been Howard picking up croots who have been risers?

While it might be in other cases, in this instance I'd say probably not.  My understanding is that Glenn has personal ties to the Howard family and in a worst case scenario could be counted on to be a solid bench player, supportive of coach and team and not a malcontent if he ends up not getting a lot of minutes.

One of the things I like about Howard's recruiting is that he mixes guys who are likely i or 2 and done with some that are likely to need 2 or 3 years of development before they get significant playing time. That should provide continuity, older players to help the new ones adjust, support school loyalty, preserve family feelings, etc,

This is the first I've noticed the athletic department acknowledging the 2 Final Fours from the Fab Five era. 8 FF includes them on his edit. It's 6 *officially*

Is this new?

Welcome Gregg!

using 247's Class Calculator tool, this puts the overall class score at 60.59, which is good for the #8 class in the country as it stands today.

Hypothetically, if they add Jett Howard, that would bump them all the way to #3 at 65.96, just behind #1 Duke (69.78) and #2 Ohio State (66.07).

For what it's worth, nearly everyone I see on Draft Twitter seems to have Houston top 7 (I've seen him as high as 3) and Diabate not in the first round.  You can hide someone who shoots the way Houston does, but bigs are more replaceable and you really have to pop from a skill standpoint, so I'd imagine Houston is much more likely to be one and done.

Glenn is intriguing.  I wonder if he can play some small ball 5. Could be an interesting look, especially if Diabate's shooting improves enough for him to function as a 4 on offense.

In the regular season I tend to agree with you that guys like Houstan are a net positive for NBA purposes. But when the real season begins (playoffs), I'd probably lean the other way.

Guys like Duncan Robinson for example, get hunted relentlessly in the playoffs via screens literally every possession until the opposing coach makes a substitution. They eventually become net negatives and playing time decreases in most cases. This is the precise scenario Spoelstra faced and he reduced Duncan's PT in the playoffs and he was on the bench a lot during closing time.

Expected, but still cool to see.

I think its a sign of the times that a top 100 kid verballing for Michigan is now just routine.

I am hoping that injuries stalled Glenn's development/ranking, as he was rated more highly last year prior to his injuries.

That said, seems like a solid kid, with good game who will be around for a while...need program kids as well as the elite blue chippers.

Lock in Jett and that's an excellent class... keep big game hunting on Traore and Dailey though

Please tell me you purposefully chose to randomly switch back and forth between referring to him as Gregg or Glenn from paragraph to paragraph.  Cause otherwise, damn

Welcome Gregg!!!

On another note, the scoreboard is pretty cool.  I have been able to ID most of the players, a couple of them I'm not sure (I know that I will Face palm once they are ID), but I have....

Top Row left to right - Trey, Hardaway, ?, Mitch, GR3, and Caris

Bottom Row left to right - ?Wilson?, Mo, Duncan, Poole, Iggy, Franz, Livers...

Is it just me, or is there a weird filter effect applied to Glenn's lower legs? It looks like that angular camo pattern that was popular on youth sports jerseys a few years ago.

On a side note, Arkansas already has a top 5 class with the number 9 player committed. He’s out of North Little Rock so it makes sense. They let the number 22 player commit to Oregon though and he’s out of North Little Rock also. They would easily have a top 3 class when it all settles if they had gotten Kel’el Ware to commit to them instead of Oregon.
