Exit: Nikhai Hill-Green Comment Count

Now you're making me mad, Attrition Monday, as yet another important 2021 piece from the 2020 class who played less in 2022 is now in the portal. This time it's a guy Michigan *REALLY* could have used in 2022, however. Best I can tell, Alejandro Zuniga was the first to have it:

Losing Hill-Green is frustrating, totally understandable, not unexpected, and totally frustrating anyways, plus argggh and grrrrr and aahh maaaaan. He was, in my mind, one of the diamonds in the rough that helped to characterize the resurgence of the last two years.

[After THE JUMP: I may get a little misty-eyed at this one]

Michigan was left badly in need of linebacking after Cam McGrone departed for the NFL (too) early, and those placing bets on Hill-Green were doing so entirely based on spring practice talk that dated back to spring 2020. In high school he was in a platoon at St. Frances with another Michigan MLB recruit, Osman Savage, and the lower ranked of the two.

By their redshirt freshman year however Savage was gone, and NHG was starting next to Josh Ross. There was a *major* breakdown against Rutgers, but by the end of the season I was nudging closer and closer to declaring Hill-Green, not senior captain Josh Ross and certainly not phenom freshman Junior Colson, Michigan's best linebacker. By the end of the season, I got there; or more accurately, he did.

Nikhai Hill-Green (2021)
Player Snaps + - T Notes
Western Michigan 37 5 5 - Not afraid to stick his nose in. Some fixable offenses.
Washington 27 6.5   0 No negatives? No waaaaaay.
Northern Illinois 22 11 0 0 Hell of a game, but context: didn't have to cover at all.
Rutgers 50 12.5 11.5 +1 TD was a -3. Made big plays after Ross was out.
Wisconsin 18 3.5 5 -1.5 5-1-5 left him out for most runs, on the field for hard stuff.
Nebraska 33 4.5 1.5 +3 Hey Blackledge, it ain't me babe! Also not the target.
Northwestern 28 2 2.5 -0.5 The boring LB.
Michigan State 21 2.5 0 +2.5 Preferred him on the field to an extra DT.
Indiana 17 1 7 -6 Bad game, routinely wasn’t finding his gap on pulls.
Penn State 18 3 0 +3 The heady one, got more PT later in the game.
Maryland 28 3.5 0 +3.5 Going to be better than Ross. Battle w Colson not finished.
Ohio State 15 0 0 - DNC
Iowa 28 5 2 +3 Should be starting over the other two, not by that much.
Georgia 28 5 2.5 +2.5 Mistakes are loud, still Michigan's best ILB.

Even in that Rutgers near-disaster, Hill-Green was Making Plays and Solving Problems by kenning what the offense meant to do. Rutgers went tempo late to hold classmate Kalel Mullings on the field, but once Michigan got NHG back out there he ended it.

I'd spend each week's UFR's patiently explaining why Ross's grade needs to be considered in the context of the intricate subtleties of Macdonald's defense, then be like, except not for this redshirt freshman.

The one that's going to stick is when he knew exactly how long to keep contain on the hip of a running back in the backfield, and when to discard him to force a throwaway.

See what I mean? There's a feel. I wore a Rob Lytle jersey* to games because I thought it was hipster to have oldsters not realize what they're appreciating. I was into Nikhai Hill-Green before it was cool, you see. And it was one of the cool things about this place that I kept meeting you people who were as well. Hill-Green was smart. He was subtle. He was perfect for this site, which was the first place to declare, definitively, David Harris is good, and here's why.

And then he got hurt. A hamstring injury held him out of spring practice, which extended to fall practice, which extended to the entire season. Michigan had to wait much of a season for Michael Barrett to get comfortable (and good), and when a starter went out they had to fall back on Kalen "Not a Linebacker" Mullings or Jimmy "Is a True Freshman" Rolder because there was nobody else.

Now they have otherbody else. Lots of them. Barrett did get comfortable, and then he got good, and then he returned for his senior season, behavior which should be highly encouraged. Michigan also yoinked the conference's most promising 2022 freshman, Ernest Hausmann, out of Nebraska, and Hausmann looked pretty dang good in the Spring Game. Jimmy Rolder also makes the leap from true freshman to probably serviceable sophomore. Hill-Green, to my eyes, looked like himself again—one very noticeable miscue for the plebs to hang him for, and several excellent plays for the discerning fans to ruminate over.

Biff Poggi, the man whose name is synonymous with St. Frances, moved on, following Don Brown, Mike Macdonald, and George Helow.

Michigan should be fine. They could be much better than fine, if Partridge unlocks Colson, Hausmann takes that next step, and Barrett can be what he became late last season for an entire campaign. They should be fine with Rolder if someone goes down, and with another year to find someone playable from the 2021-'23 kids. We'll find plenty to appreciate.

This does put a bow on the 2020 linebacker class, however. Those guys:

  1. Kalel Mullings. Now at running back, which is where Wisconsin wanted him.
  2. Osman Savage. Didn't make it out of 2020 before transferring to Alabama A&M. He's now a coder.
  3. William Mohan. Transferred to Tennessee after 2020, dismissed.
  4. Cornell Wheeler. Also left after 2020. Deep backup for Kansas.
  5. Nikhai Hill-Green.

Michigan needed someone from that class to hit, and they got one in Hill-Green. Unfortunately his injury robbed us of 2022, and 2023 is a very different world from 2020.

That 2020 season was a free one for everyone, however, and with a slam dunk medshirt for 2022, NHG has three years left to give someone else. I really hope it's to someone Michigan doesn't play, and doesn't hate too much, because I really like rooting for him. Maybe he'll follow Poggi to Charlotte. I might have to get that jersey.

Understandable, going to miss him. Could've used him in that game versus TCU.

Wouldn't be surprised to see Mullings go back to splitting duty since he's not going to get a ton of carries at RB.

Probably makes sense to have him go both ways.

Minter was literally just talking last week about the LB depth and how they had none last year and it hurt us late in the year when guys were playing hurt.

1's Colson and Barrett (and basically Hausmann)

2's Hausmann (and some Barrett) and Rolder

3's Mullings and Pollard

...that's still a solid group. Then you have Hood, Bridgeman, Moore and Hewlett.

Mullings has to be ready to play some LB or Hood needs to be ready to play snaps this season.

Not unless it's a guy who just wants to fill his rolodex. They go four deep right now and can still turn to Mullings if they need a 5th. We've already heard good things about Pollard, Jaydon Hood finally looked like a guy.

I'm more concerned about next year, when they could lose Colson and Barrett, and need to find someone to be the 3rd LB out of the pile.

Out of the three exits this one does surprise me. Seemed like he was clearly going to be sharing snaps with Barrett alongside the ever present Colson. Perhaps Hausman is just that dude though. If rolder is getting significant snaps deep into the season they’re in trouble though.

I feel like this blog got a little enamoured with NHG because he flashed really good instincts on like 6 plays in 2021. Yet for some reason have hesitations about Rolder who was thrown in as true freshman and, while not Devin Bush, was generally servicable. Thats usually a good sign for future performance.

I think people are forgetting that Rolder is actually good and that he’s likely to be much better after a year in the weight and film rooms… Dude beat out several older players for time last year (I know we had depth issues but still…) and he’s very likely to make a big leap this year or next

I waited all 2022 season for him to pop back into the lineup.  It sadly never happened.  And now that his injury has mended and he's ready to hit the field again, poof he's gone.  Damn it all.

Minus 1 on hyphenated names.

This stuff is going to continue to happen. As the portal becomes more and more a part of the landscape we’re gonna lose good players that we really like. But it says a lot about where our program is today vs 2020 that we’re losing very good players because their position room is too deep for them to see the field and need an opportunity elsewhere. I’d much rather lose good players over situations like this than the attrition we saw over the last few years when there was rampant toxicity and you had kids that just didn’t seem to want to buy in. Ultimately this means we have reached an elevated level. Will think of him fondly but it says way more about the guys we’ll see on the filed this year and what they’ve been able to develop in to.

The portal giveth, and the portal taketh away.

I am sure that, now that the spring games are over, our coaching staff, along with the other staffs around the country, have sat the players down and told them what their roles are projected to be as of now. Consequently, some guys see greener grass elsewhere.

Recruiting is important, but so is retention and portal management. .

You have to be pretty selfish to be leaving a team now that some (at least one?) have predicted to be #1 in the country pre-season, right?  I mean, especially at a position like LB, where guys are going to rotate and injuries are not uncommon.  There is no way that NHG was not going to see significant playing time, on a team that is going to get a ton of exposure and coverage, and is well-coached and consistently puts LBs into the NFL.  I honestly don't get this one.  Perhaps an emotional decision for him for some reason we don't understand, but almost certainly not a good business decision.

I like the guy as a player but neither you nor I know where he is on the depth chart. If he isn't a starter or maybe with his injury he fell back to 3rd, he probably doesn't play a lot.

He can go to Charlotte and likely start for 3 years. You get better at football playing football. If he wants to make the NFL, that's not a bad plan

As far as selfish. You gotta look out for yourself, no one else will. And he can be a good teammate in Charlotte just as well as at Michigan.

If Tom Brady transfers to Charlotte, he probably doesn't get drafted at all, and almost certainly doesn't become the GOAT.  I'm sure there are examples both ways on this.  Nonetheless, whether you agree with "selfish" or not, still a bad business decision on the face of it.  I grant you that we likely don't know the whole story.

This might be a similar situation to CU where they played a kid a ton in the spring game to get him exposure for the portal.  IIRC he was all over he field.

Is this maybe a Ben St.-Juste kinda thing? Michigan wouldn't clear him medically, so he's trainer/doctor-shopping for a team that will?

If not, i apologize for speculating too much.

Hope it all works for him; thanks to him for his contributions for us.

It's a shame - I followed all of Seth's prognosis of NHG on the podcasts and was looking forward to getting him back on the field. Amazing how a hamstring injury can linger - must have been a tear. I never heard of the exact injury and thought it must have been an ACL/MCL to miss that kind of time. And yeah - we really could have used him.

We'll need the big fast and smart Gold/Foote/Hobson types back there if we are going to make a successful run at the Natty.
