Exit Jerald Robinson

University-of-Michigan-player-Jerald-Robinson-83[1]

this was not a catch

Well, it finally happened: Jerald Robinson has left the team after two years of practice hype did not translate into playing time. Michigan returns Drew Dileo and Jeremy Gallon, but in non-short-guy receivers the only returning experience is Jeremy Jackson. Darboh, Chesson, and whichever freshmen come in will have to pick it up fast.

Robinson is now the 15th member of the 27-strong 2010 class to exit. The departed:

  • Conelius Jones (never showed up, academics)
  • Carvin Johnson (played a bit, but transferred midway through Hoke year one)
  • Cullen Christian (torched as a freshman, followed Tony Gibson to Pitt)
  • Demar Dorsey (academics)
  • Terrence Talbott (left team before fall for mysterious reasons)
  • Ray Vinopal (same as Christian)
  • Terry Talbott (injury)
  • Antonio Kinard (never showed up, academics)
  • Davion Rogers (never showed up, academics)
  • Christian Pace (injury)
  • Stephen Hopkins (moved to FB, injured a bit, quit football)
  • Austin White (booted off team almost before showing up)
  • Ricardo Miller (gave up football after not finding PT)
  • Jerald Robinson (presumed transfer after not finding PT)
  • DJ Williamson (didn't like football, quit)

What a disaster. Jackson and Dileo are the only WRs left from the five Michigan brought in; Michigan has no other offensive recruits left from that class other than Devin Gardner. There's not much on defense, either: Jibreel Black, Courtney Avery, and Jake Ryan are the only contributors. You are permitted to go poke your Rodriguez voodoo dolls now.

As for the future: Michigan now has a full 25 spots in the current class without anyone else leaving. Lewan is headed to the draft and Michigan's sudden urgency to recruit an additional linebacker or two probably indicates attrition is on its way there, so expect this class to bulge up to 27-28 when all is said and done. Sam Webb suggested on the radio today that Michigan could take up to seven more players from their current total of 21/22, give or take the longsnapper.

I'd expect Green/Dawson/some LB/Delano Hill as four of them, with randoms making up the remainder.

Look, I think the "Fire Borges" movement is bit premature too, but when we went scoreless in the 2nd half against OSU and Gardner and Denard never saw the field together, bringing him up for criticism is MORE than fair.

Predicting that 2013 is going to be an "offensive disaster" with such an incomplete picture of what the offensive personnel situation is going to look like is alarmist.  I actually see the potential for the offense to be better next year.  Not Drew Henson-led 2000 U of M better, but better.

not for "hot seat". ND and MSU were disasters for either play calling or execution - both fall on Borges. Implosion at Neb was an issue with Bellomy's prep - all on Borges.

You are correct to expect better in 2013. I suspect it must improve for Borges' sake. Hopefully he shows brilliance.

This is getting confusing: in the transition from Lloyd to RR there was attrition, especially in the first months. And that was RR's fault? And in the transition from RR to Hoke there is attrition, but now we're two full years in. And that's RR's fault also? But then Lloyd supposedly offered to sign transfer papers. So it's Lloyd's fault?

I'm confused. Which Michigan coach am I supposed to hate? Or am I supposed to think it's a small n problem?

I think it's about why guys leave. RR lost guys who were good to very good football players (Boren, Mallett, Toney Clemons, etc) who went on to play successfully elsewhere, and talked shit on the way out. That's not a recruiting issue, it's an issue with the program.

The guys that Hoke is losing are RR recruits who just aren't good. Hoke isn't losing starters who are unhappy with the program, he's losing guys that RR recruited but who just can't play. So in these instances, it's RR's fault for not recruiting guys who can play.

I was a staunch RR supporter, but RR lost starters, Hoke is losing scrubs. It's a lot different.

FWIW, I don't really blame Rodriguez for the loss of Mallett, Boren, etc.  Mallett was almost gone, anyway, and didn't fit.  Boren was just a dick.

Clemons gave it a whirl and didn't like how he was being used, and in retrospect, I don't blame him.  Rodriguez made him play slot receiver, and he's not a slot receiver in that offense.  He went to Colorado, had a decent senior year, and is getting a taste of the NFL.  That definitely seems to have been the right move for him.

But all those guys - Mallett, Boren, Clemons, etc. - were signed by Lloyd Carr, so I'm not sure how much they have to do with Rodriguez.  I mean, yeah, they transferred away while he was the coach, but this thread is about Rodriguez-recruited players who are transferring under Hoke.  Those guys landed elsewhere and had decent or very good college careers, whereas these Rodriguez recruits are generally ending up . . . nowhere.  A huge chunk of these 2010 kids are totally out of football, not starting games for Arkansas, Ohio State, and Colorado.

...if Hoke is the hire over Rich Rod.

Not saying we win the B1G, but we're not 3-9 and we're in a bowl. With that said, we never experience Denard, we never get this awesome "This Is Michigan/Return To Greatness" theme that we've had under Hoke because we likely never fall.

We'll never know if we would've been great had we hired Hoke from the jump, but it's a fair assumption to say we'd be exactly where we were under Carr around that time. 7-5, 9-3, 8-4 type years.

In the end, blame Bill Martin, he fucked up the coaching search. Which is another reason why I don't understand the hatred of Dave Brandon. He makes money and hires good coaches who win. That should overshadow bumblebee jerseys and band to Dallas gaffes.

In 2008 Mallett was unpopular with his teammates, unpopular with his coaches, and an Arkansas kid suddenly presented with a solid alternative to Michigan when the Hogs brought in Petrino.  Whether we hired Hoke or Rodriguez in 2008, it's still very debatable whether Mallett was under center for Michigan that fall.

Hoke would've been an underwhelming choice in 2008 and assuming Mallett tranferred, that team still would've struggled to win 8 games, at which point the fanbase starts grumbling about Michigan not going out and hiring a higher profile, better quality coach.

Depends on which Michigan clan you fell under:

Bo Clan - If we'd hired Harbaugh, we'd be in the BCS title game right now....rabble rabble

The Rebellion - RR was screwed and The Process was a sham

Corduroy Jacket With Patch Clan - Attrition?  What attrition?

In Rod We Trusted - See The Rebellion...fucking media double standard...blargh!

Lloyd Loyalists - Fucking Rich Rod ran off all our talent and left us with a bunch of undersize midgets for Hoke to work with....thank god for Mattison!

Cotton Pickin Blues - Brady Hoke a fine coach and fine man and we'll be just fine

Fierce Pragmatists - Can't we all just get along?

The Second Estate - Who is this Rich Rodriguez you speak of?

The Decatur Clan - Hoke!  Good riddance Rodriguez, good riddance Lloyd.  Hoke!

Bottom line, when the chips were down and the program floundered, we as a fanbase were exposed as being just a petty and reactionary as all the others that we like to point at and laugh.  We've kind of surrendered any right to do that in the future.

I actually think this is a bigger loss than people think - including Brian.

I think Robinson was going to come into his own this spring and summer knowing that he was "THE MAN." Similar to Devin Gardner this year.

Now I could've seen him transfer in the fall if Darboh, Chesson or a freshman beat him out. But not sure why this makes sense now until the coaches told him he wasn't going to play or there was a character issue that they wanted to remove from the team. From JR's standpoint, I bust my butt knowing it's now my time and I'm starting opposite Gallon with Dileo in the slot and a much better passer getting me the ball.

With all that said, if we can get Green, a healthy Fitz and our OL comes along, we'll be fine. Young WRs isn't a bad thing, I look at Amari Cooper at Alabama - kid just gets it down for the Tide. We don't need '04 Braylon to move the ball and you don't have to be a senior to be good at that position.

Occam's Razor, Robinson wasn't going to see meaningful PT and he knew it.  Better for him to concentrate on his finals and find a new school rather than submit to what would be meaningless practice for a game he would only watch.

I don't get that statement either.  If you're 3rd on a depth chart behind two freshmen with another 2 or 3 WR recruits incoming that are touted to be better "fits" for a Borges ran offense, I think it's smart to cut bait and move on.

I wish Jerald all the best in his future, thank him for all his years of hard work, and hope he'll remember his time here in Ann Arbor fondly.

"...what do you say, is it the new Bluesmobile or what?"

Wish him the best. That class seems snakebitten to a degree I've rarely seen outside of Iowa's backfield

Keep your eye on this kid next year. I hear he has been lighting up in practice this year as a walk on freshman. Got hurt in HS, but played with Tommy Rees in HS and got some looks from DI schools. Good kid who fits the system and could make a big impression next year.
