Exit: Erick All and Louis Hansen Comment Count

Seth December 5th, 2022 at 1:25 PM

[This article has been updated]

Michigan is going to lose a chunk of their tight end depth, including a former starter who previously told the program he was returning. Erick All is the big one, since we were planning on him returning to start next season with Luke Schoonmaker going to the senior bowl:

All should have two years of eligibility left thanks to the COVID year and a medshirt for 2022.

[Hit THE JUMP for a career summary, Hansen, and analysis]

Exit Erick All

All had ten starts in 2021 and played in 30 in total games for Michigan from 2018-2021. He was one of the most important pieces of last year's run, winning kickout blocks at the point of attack for Michigan's power running game on the regular. He also took the winning crossing route to the house on a bum ankle to beat Penn State on the road.

I know we don't like to remember 2020 but he had the block of the year:

And there was an entire drive against Georgia last year that was just All making great blocks and catches (until Cade went away from All and threw an interception). Michigan fans have many, many reasons to be grateful for his time here. Last year doesn't happen without him.

I also get why this feels like a betrayal. Insider boards (and some common phrasing with the Acheampong announcement) are all pointing to this being an NIL thing. [UPDATE: I have two independent sources I trust who say it wasn't an NIL thing but a disagreement related to the treatment of All's injury. Due to medical privacy it's impossible to say what the specific disagreement is about.] It also may be an injury thing and a family thing--All became a father this year, and also lost the season to a back injury. Hopefully he's going to make a full recovery and have a long NFL career, but if that's in jeopardy it makes sense to explore all available options.

It also makes sense for Iowa, which bases its offense on tight ends, and is losing their good one as well as their last two functional receivers, to be taking big swings on free agent receiving options this offseason.

Exit Lou Hansen

Redshirt freshman TE Louis Hansen is also in the portal, he announced today (the first day the portal's officially open).

This one was more expected, since Hansen hasn't been able to see the field. Being behind Schoonmaker and All was one thing, but Hansen is also behind true freshman Colston Loveland, walk-on classmate Max Bredeson, and So/Jr Matthew Hibner. He might have had a much better shot at playing time next year with All, Schoonmaker, Joel Honigford, and Carter Seltzer departing.

Michigan should still be fine with Loveland/Bredeson/Hibner next year. An offensive lineman could take Honigford's role, speedster Marlin Klein will be coming off a redshirt, and it's not like Michigan struggles to recruit the position. They may however want to take another swing at convincing Schoonmaker to use his 6th year.

I read his tweets the same way. He said "Not everything/everyone are what they seem and I learned that from my time here at Michigan" which implies that he felt deceived. I suppose it's possible that he felt deceived about his NIL compensation, but this seems like something interpersonal. It sounds like more of a Frankie Collins situation -- he feels hurt and leaves, even though situationally it seems like he would still be featured in a major role next year. Time will reveal more information.

This seems very plausible to me.  I've gotten a feeling with no hard evidence, based on the way Michigan handles players with injuries, that they're very cautious.  More cautious than maybe other programs.  But it's hard to get a handle on unless/until some former player opens up about it publicly.  We're all just speculating.

Yeah definitely don’t understand what could have happened here. All is and has been so important.

Regardless wish him well and hope he does well at Iowa if that is indeed his next stop.

I don't know. That second part of the All tweet doesn't seem to imply an NIL problem. Unless he had a deal go bad.

Maybe the medical that has been talked about?

Might need a lawyer to keep me honest but AFAIK there is no "bidding" with NIL.  NIL money doesn't come from the Athletic Department; it's not a wage.  They have no direct control.

At the most basic level, All would need to be compensated for NIL sales -- and can sue if he ain't -- but any dispute would be between him and whoever's selling the swag (e.g., M-Den).  I'm sure it's more complicated in practice since the University exercises jealous control over its image, but I still don't see how money could be guaranteed since any royalties would need to be paid out by the vendor anyway.  That's assuming honesty; I'm sure you could launder money through NIL but the NCAA won't even crack down on cash handouts on camera so why bother with the ruse?

I thought All was gone because he was going to enter the NFL draft. Oh well, he's gone now. All the best to Cade and All in Iowa. May be they will win the west division?

I'm no insider but I have a hard time seeing how the tea leaves indicate that

Seems more like a personal grudge/beef/medical thing rather than NIL

Complete speculation but hey isn't that what the internet's for?

I'll always appreciate Cade and All for what they meant to the 2021 team. Truly an all-time team that we'll look back on fondly decades from now. I'll never forget the Penn State catch and run. Go blue guys and good luck

Having said that- of all power 5 schools to go to...these guys pick Iowa? Not 10 years ago Iowa. But Brian Ferentz #120 offense to SP+ Iowa. I'll be pulling for them to play well the next 1-2 years but it's probably gonna be a slog over there

When I saw the Erick All tweets my initial thoughts on his "unexpected" reasons were:

1. Michigan's medical staff wasn't comfortable letting him play after back surgery given they've shown to be overly cautious before (Ben St. Juste coming to mind).

2. Him not loving the how the Cade/JJ QB competition was handled, particularly since Iowa seems like his destination as well and Erick and Cade shared a great chemistry in the breakout 2021 season.

3. The NIL situation outlined here.

If it's the NIL stuff like the insiders have suggested, I can't really argue there. All deserves to be paid and if he's got a better deal at a new school, business is business. I wouldn't fault any of my co-workers if they jumped ship for a much better salary as well.

All was a true breakout star at Michigan and will be remembered fondly. For someone advertised as a jumbo WR with his share of standout catches, it was his blocking that stood out as an incredible surprise and really put him over the top. Michigan has found a groove in taking overlooked Ohio guys lately and using that as a chip on the team's shoulder, and All was one of his most memorable. Best of luck to him moving forward.

Darn. It was a great feeling having such a strong TE group, like recognizing you've got more money in the bank than you thought.

Thanks,  All and Hansen for your contributions to the team.

So weird to have two current captains quit the team and announce transfers before the season is over. Cade I guess I understand (didn’t like the timing) but All was going to be getting starter reps.

I hate the whole vague not everyone is what they seem.

Why can't he just say Loveland has the position covered and he's going to look for a team that needs him? Or whatever actually is the reason.  Or just not say anything negative if he cant be specific about it.

But, I wish him the best and appreciate everything he did for the team.

Sorry and sad to see Erick All leave Michigan. Michigan has been very good at developing TE these past few years.

As stated, Loveland and with Bredeson and Hibner, Michigan should be fine.

Good luck Erick, see you in Iowa (likely landing spot)

Well, that's a bummer, but frankly I figured when he got hurt that he'd played his last game for Michigan, so it wasn't until his announcement last week that I was even thinking about him being on the team next year, and let's be real, in that time frame I haven't exactly been thinking too much about next year. Loveland is gonna be a monster but yeah I agree about kicking the tires on Schoon again. Depth is important for this physical team.

Usual suspects among hater fanbases will point to the Cade aspect as some kind of "proof" that Michigan's locker room is "divided" over Cade/JJ and how Harbaugh "betrays" players, but don't let them. It will be the same people saying back in August they'd heard "rumors" that the JJ/Cade competition had "torn the team apart" and that Michigan was likely headed for a disastrous season because of it.

I don't really buy the NIL thing. This is complete speculation here going by things people (seemingly connected people) on twitter have said over the last few months. It seemed like Michigan's medical staff did not want All to have surgery and he decided to go forward with having the surgery anyway. All's dad responded to Don Thomas on twitter saying "you don't want the truth to come out" in regards to All's reason for transferring. My guess would be it stems from the disagreement over the the medical situation. Based purely on conjecture, I bet All and his family have the perception that Michigan didn't want him to have the surgery so they could keep him on the field this year rather than they genuinely didn't think he should have the surgery for his own sake.

I'm sure more tea leaves with surface soon.

I always thought Erick All was awesome and his TD against Penn State last year was so clutch. That said, he seems upset although is not clear what he is upset about. As a leader I would rather have someone on my team leave than create any toxic feelings in the locker room. Erick will hook up again with Cade in Iowa. I wish them both the best. Those that stay will be champions again, again, and again.

All's tweets and their timing strongly suggest that he's bitter about something. And the 'someone' add-on further implies he was told one thing and that thing changed or didn't happen. I wish him well here at Iowa but adults gotta learn to own their words and deeds.  Expressing vague bitterness and implying deception on the way out the door without details is childish behavior. He has every right to express himself and feel however he does but the team just won a B1G Championship and earned a #2 seed in the CFP. Not a good look, Bob.

Well, shit.

Also, what the hell?

With those comments, can't help wondering what is going on.

Obviously, the dude isn't happy and is leaving because of it.  So, is that to follow Cade?  Is it that Michigan feels the injury is more major than he does?  Or vice versa?  Who knows?

That was some bs line about everything/everyone not as they seem.Sounds to me it's a veiled stab at Harbaugh and/or some key players, and is also the current sentiment of Cade his QB, who cannot say the same thing being the top guy as QB.  Am surprised there isn't more disappointment here from it.

As I was a very big supporter of Cade, and it was questionable to bench the starter who did so well, but Harbaugh was right, the better player won the job, and it sucks for Cade, it does.  I don't think this has ever happened, closest thing I can think was when Hurts got benched. If Cade has to vent thru his friends so be it.

Cade didn't understand why there was a QB competition because he was a B1G Champion starting QB.

But the guy who replaced him ended up being a B1G Champion starting QB.

So looking back, J.J. has proven that he was a B1G Champion starting QB all along. So he had every right to be angry that he wasn't outright named the starter in the summer. But he didn't even know it.

Should Cade understand now, since J.J. is also a B1G Champion starting QB, why there was a QB competition in the summer, since they're both B1G Champion starting QBs. And maybe now decide to not be salty and stay at U-M?

Or would we have branched off into an alternative timeline if J.J. had been named starter in the summer where he doesn't go on to win the B1G??

Very sorry to hear Erick All is leaving Michigan.  He was a terrific player here.  Having a child is a life altering and wonderful responsibility.  Have no idea how to read tea leaves with this.  Can only wish him the very best with everything with everything.

I'm sorry All is leaving.  We'll always have that Penn State TD to win the game last year.

I wish him well and will follow his future career with considerable interest.

December 5th, 2022 at 7:26 PM ^

My initial thought was All was basically used like a fullback to smash back DL.  Which he did incredibly well and pure guessing that led to his back injury, and probably it was expected in the future and he may not be that confident in his body yet.  In general: the Idea that going to a school with less of a run game would be beneficial to long term health.

When I heard about the surgery I was worried his football career was over (partly selfishly because I really loved how hard he played and how impressively fast he was for a big guy and partly worried about his future income prospects with a new family).

I think there are always bound to be situations in a top shelf team because of the internal competition that eventually leaves someone feeling out in the cold.

First of all I want to thank Erick for a wonderful career at Michigan and he’ll have not one but two Big Ten Championship rings. I will say the way he posted it, was super alarming. We will be fine at the position. I wish him and Cade didn’t compete for Big Ten titles against us but it is what it is.

Im assuming the destination will be Iowa. Just seems to obvious.

I understand McNamara leaving. His only chance of making it to an NFL practice squad (or possibly even a late round pick) is with another team. But All's leaving - and the implied darkness of his tweets - is just weird, unless he is of the mind that McNamara got screwed over and he's just not going to take it anymore. Or something.

My daughter read somewhere (has to be reddit) that it's a disagreement over medical treatment and condition. Whatever, it's nowhere near as clear as McNamara's flight to fame and fortune.
