Cam McGrone, Quinn Nordin Enter Draft Comment Count

Brian December 29th, 2020 at 4:06 PM

McGrone joins Jalen Mayfield as an NFL draft hopeful with almost nothing aside from a redshirt freshman season to go on:

McGrone was impressive but erratic in 2019 and didn't get much of an opportunity to show what he could do this year because of COVID, the defensive tackles, and an injury. Pegging his position is near-impossible. I'd imagine someone takes a swing at him in the mid- to late-rounds since he's demonstrated some impressive ability.

UPDATE: Quinn Nordin also declared

What kind of grade could he have received from the NFL to make a decision like this? Good luck Cam, but another year would have been more beneficial to him than any player in recent memory that has declared early. IMO.

Mr. Impaler - Normally, the best thing to do in response to an obviously provocative comment like this is just to ignore it since it adds nothing other than to reveal the poster’s inadequacies.  However, since you are commenting on a post about the departure of a member of the team, and thereby detracting from that player’s experience should he read this post, I wanted to simply say that you are a very selfish and self-absorbed person, Mr. Impaler.  Cam McGrone just wrote a message about what an honor it was to play on the team, to share experiences with his teammates, and to play for great Michigan fans.  You should be ashamed of yourself, Mr. Impaler, but unfortunately I’m confident you are not.

Odd. He's definitely got the physical upside, but wasn't great this year. Hopefully he shows out at the combine and a team takes a flyer on him in the late rounds because beyond that, I'm not sure he'll be drafted

Definitely the most questionable draft declaration so far imo

He has more solid film out there than McGrone. McGrone has a some decent film from his sophomore year then a lot of his film from his junior year is inconsistent, full of bad reads, and overcommits. The only reason he gets draft is due to his physical upside and teams thinking they can develop him further

While I agree with your assessment on McGrone, my expectation is that he will indeed get drafted. If you just looked at McGrone's sophomore film, you see a possible 1st/2nd rounder in the making, so he clearly has the tools. I'm sure Don Brown's terrible year will be factored into it.

My overall point is that McGrone will get drafted and Ambry is a toss up in my opinion.

I think some of these young guys are getting some questionable career advice...unless they just want to "get paid" immediately and don't care about how much potential earnings they forgo (and how the teamates they leave behind might feel).

I'm not in their position and don't have all the details... just seems odd, as others have mentioned.

I assume this is tongue in cheek but there are people who believe this shit and peddle it for clicks.

If you want to reasonably consider how a coach could have affected his decision then the loss of Brown makes sense. There is the “bush” role in browns defense. Who knows what the next DC will run.

I think playing behind tackles who can’t keep you clean would be the biggest reason and Brown deserves all the blame for that.

You may be right as it pertains to Cam. I have no idea...But to assume "tongue in cheek...peddle it for clicks" is inaccurate. As has been stated numerous times on this board and is very well documented about Harbaugh's tenure with both Stanford and the Niners, he simply wears people out. Wherever he goes, he burns bridges with both the admin and the team, and that's a very well understood and known risk about what comes along with hiring Harbaugh.

Again, I can't comment about the specifics of Cam...but as both a Niners fanatic and Stanford grad / fan, I have a decade's worth of stories and intel to suggest he's not the easiest human being to work with, nor is he a "player's oriented coach." He's a pretty arrogant guy and is known to play favorites among players...but that's before UM, when he was winning. So maybe he is different now?

Here's another piece of evidence in the "why OSU keeps winning" trial of this century.

They have players that are sure fire first round draft picks coming back to play another year.

We have players who might be updrafted free agents in the CFL checking out as soon as they can.

It sure seems like we continue to have a growing list of potential All American and All Big Ten seasons missing from players leaving early.

McGrone, Nico, Ambry, Mayfield, Carpenter to name a few.

Maybe the OSU players have a little money in their pocket and aren’t feeling the same urgency to get a paycheck.

Late to the party, but I wanted to address this. IMO the key issue is "stability."

OSU is a stable program. They win. They transition coaches without much drama. The biggest controversy they've had to deal with is Zach Smith having a mental breakdown on Twitter. Everything else is a known quantity, a world that the players are confident in navigating because it's been consistent.

And sure, there may be some "perks" to staying at OSU, maybe even relatively significant, but do we honestly believe that those perks outweigh NFL stardom & money?

Contrast that to Michigan. I won't rehash our last...12 years.

It's a pretty normal human reaction, when your world is being fucked with, to peace out. Think about the business world: people quit or retire in droves every time there's a reorg.

When your DC, who uniquely values the position you're playing, is sacked, rightly or wrongly, it's not unthinkable to be very concerned about who will replace him and whether you'll be valuable to that person.

Don't ask me why he's entering the draft, though. Can't fathom that one.

Yes, Hutchinson decided to come back but there have been a lot more instances of guys leaving early that are projected mid/late round draft picks rather than staying to improve their stock.

So, yes it is very possible guys cant wait to leave the program even if it is not in their best interest.

*rather to stay and possibly improve their stock, while risking injuries that could derail their career and while forgoing the ability to get paid for dedicating their life to football

And we only hear about or care about Michigan's transfers, draft enrollees, etc (naturally). But these numbers don't mean much in a vacuum without valid comparisons to other programs and what their numbers are

While I wish him the best of luck and hope he has a great NFL career, this, along with Ambry Thomas' decision to go pro seem...early and the changes of being an undrafted FA seem higher than not..but what do I know, I'm just a dude behind a computer

I know Cam’s family. I wish him all the luck in the world and hope he sticks. With that said, respectfully, this is a very bad decision. He looks out of place and lost half the time on defense. I’m not necessarily blaming him, but he’s a 2nd or 3rd round guy who’s now going to drop into the 4 to 7 range I fear. He could have played next season and gotten himself into a 2nd round pick. I hope the best for him. Great guy. Just not sure this is a good decision. Mayfield I understand and Paye as well. McGrone I’m just not sure.

I’m not going to disagree. I just think he is way better than he showed this last year. People say a lot about Peppers and Gary and that they weren’t utilized correctly or didn’t make a bunch of plays. But the fact is they did contribute in ways a lot of guys just didn’t see, que the Gary video of him getting triple teamed. I think McGrone did get utilized poorly this year because Michigan decided to start playing half zone, that they didn’t know how to run, and half dr. Blitz stuff. Problem is the linebackers weren’t great at the zone stuff and the defensive tackles weren’t good enough to let McGrone just go after people. So instead of playing he’s thinking too much. Sounds to me, based on what the family has said, he didn’t want to try and learn a completely new system and only be in it for a year. I believe McGrone was going to leave either way though. Whether or not Brown stuck around. I think the family is hoping he’ll have a great combine and people will chalk this year up to “covid crazyness”

Weird move, IMO. Maybe he gets picked up in the late rounds but not hard to envision him going undrafted. I actually thought he'd train his butt off and try to come back for a kick ass season. Don't' get me wrong wish him the best and hope he gets paid but this has Lavert Hill written all over it.
