Per jhackney's request, and bc he's the OBVIOUS frontrunner now that the chin is headed to SF, let's talk Patterson. Annnnnnnd GO!

I would streak through the quad to the gymnasium if we get Patterson.  I would also han-solo myself for the next 4 years if Hoke is hired.  Take your pick.

One of the best two or three candidates out there.  Very solid coach.  Can recruit (although no midwest ties) and runs a great program.  I would take him in a heartbeat.  The other guy I really like is Mullen.  Only 2 years as head coach but great resume/experience.  On top of that, if he got the job we could say he won it fair and square after a sound butt kicking in the Gator bowl.

Miles - not so much.  I guess I would accept the mad hatter, but not crazy happy about that.

Brady Hoke - Kill me now.  Everybody quit bringing up his name.  He CANNOT be our next coach.

Mullen leaving MSU after signing an extension a week ago.  Miles has a better track record in the same conference and has midwest ties.  I understand the reason some don't like him but I think he is the best choice at this time.

Patterson would be a great choice as well, but I think Miles would be better.  Either way just please get it all over with.

Mullen and Patterson are clearly the two best options out there.  Patterson seems to be indicating that he is interested.  Mullen interviewed for Miami.  I think either one could be had.

bring the fanbase together

know Michigan

can recruit Michigan and the Big Ten

be flexible and adapt his systems to the players he has

Does GP get Michigan? Probably not.

Can he recruit Michigan and the Big Ten?  Possibly, but he is foreign to the HS coaches here

Does he undertand our rivals?  Maybe

Will he be flexible?  Possibly.

I like his team and his way with the media, but he doesn't fill the familiar "getting" Michigan part (kinda like RR)

Is he better than Hoke?  Certainly more accomplished, but better for Michigan, I don't know

I wasa Harbaugh or bust guy.  Now, I am simply depressed.  My season tickets hang in the balance on this decision.  I cannot justify spending all the $$ on a unproven rebuilding project.  The last three years have been very painful.  I hate the thought of Les Miles coming here and Hoke make me nervous.  Urban Meyer might be cool.  I need a day or so to get over being dumped by JH.  Did DB really pursue him?

He kept sighting the "competitive" opportunity or something with the Niners. Good Heavens, if he were watching MSU and Ohio State rub our faces in crap the last few years, he'd know that the stakes couldn't be higher then at U of M.  The program his mentor built to a power hangs in the balance.

I guess it would be bad form to say that his family prefers to stay where they are at or something more concrete.

You are probably right. But I have attended maybe a dozen Washington/Dallas games. Arguably the most heated rivalry in the NFL.  If we are talking stadium energy and deep emotional attachment by the fans to the outcome, a great college rivalry game beats it into the ground.

I get what you are saying and I think that was a motivator. I agree.

He's the best remaining candidate given all the names thrown out there thus far.  I have but three questions for my esteemed MGobloggers:

1) Can he recruit "high-end" (4-5*) talent consistently?  I profess no knowledge of TCU's recruiting classes, but our best defenses have historically had at least 1-2 undisputed studs; we need such ability given OSU and ytMSU's recent success against us, risk of ceding future such recruits to those nefarious institutions, and the black hole that will likely be this recruiting class barring last minute miracles.

2) What's the nearest airport to TCU?

3) Did GERG take the stuffed beaver with him or leave it behind for the next DC?

Most coaches are going to have a hard time recruiting 4-5* guys at TCU. But I think if you put him at a school like Michigan, he could recruit with anyone.

He still gets a couple of 4* guys at TCU every year, fwiw.

Well compare the Texas area with the midwest, it's similar in that there are talented recruits being fought over by marquee programs. The same, I don't think, can be said for the area in which the Big East schools are located, to an extent at least. I think Patterson would do fine recruiting here. I firmly believe though, that if RR were left alone, his classes would have been fine. For instance, this class could have featured, Hart, Frost, Lyons, Bryant, Dawson, maybe even Jernigan at one point had they changed schemes.

Here's the bottom line:

Patterson wins. Winning = good recruiting in the midwest and the rest of the country (plus, hire some assistants with midwest ties if this is such a big concern).

Hoke only kinda wins.

The fanbase needs to choose: Do we want a "michigan man" or national championships. No candidate really meets both criteria (assuming you disqualify Miles for his conduct).

GP gives us the best chance to win and embodies the michigan man spirit.

End of story.

DB: May I speak with Mr. Patterson?

GP: Hello?

DB: This is Dave Brandon, athletic director at the University of Michigan.

GP. OMG HAIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII

DB: I was wondering if you are interested in becoming our head coach?

GP: OMG I ALREADY FILLED OUT AN APPLICATION ONLINE!!!!!!! FUCK YES I AM!!!!11!1

DB: Ok then. I will wait until 75% of the fanbase develop ulcers then announce you are in after a triple fake to Hoke.

GP: YOU RULZ LULZ

DB: Anyway I can convince you to bring Hoke on as an assistant?

GP: No, but I will allow you to convince me to have him lick my taint.

DB: Fair enough, welcome to the family. Drop your southern accent though.

All - first time, long time. Decided to jump in as I need some sort of frickin' outlet being surrounded by all these damn Buckeyes in Columbus.

Did anyone hear about the "Little Sisters of the Poor" billboards that showed up around Columbus? It is an omen.

of everything good and holy I hope we get Patterson.  I think he'd be amazing for us.  Only has to overcome that stupid "Michigan Man" bs.  Michigan man is about character and charisma.  The one guy who could've united the fan base, and the Athletic Department is gone, lets get on this one.

Exactamente, amigo. Plus, the 4-2-5 look would allow us to have Martin, RVB, Roh, and Black/Ash/Washington up front with Demens and JB holding down the ILB spots, then trot out the surprise performer for next year, Josh Furman at the LB/S spot, Avery and Woolfolk at the corner spots, and Kovacs and Jt Floyd at the safety spots. (Woolfolk and JT could be interchanged). Marvin, Vinopal, Cullen, Krost, etc. could easily factor in, just guestimating.

I don't understand.   I'm way out here in California, but the only clear voices being heard out of the state of Michigan right now is "MICHIGAN MAN! or bust!".

Please clarify.

Over.

He's Auburn's OC & a very hot property:

http://www.ledger-enquirer.com/2010/12/29/1400580/auburn-football-offen…

He just turned down Vanderbilt HC offer.  Auburn extended him at $1.3 million to continue as OC.  Maybe DB's plan to spend big could still change his mind?  If he would consider a UM offer, he would be worth a serious look.

Surprised no one on the board has picked up his name!

I worry about his ties (or lack thereof) in the Midwest. No, it absolutely isn't a deal breaker, but when we're put in a position to fill out a recruiting class in just over three weeks, it'd be nice to know the guy has some tricks up his sleeve on the home front.

<br>He is, however, Gary Patterson, and he does shit rainbows.

I agree 100% about not caring where they come from.  If a kid can play and he can get in, he could be from the armpit of America and I couldn't care less.  (FYI, I've seen it and it's called Michigan City, IN)

I guess all of this just screams 2007/08 all over again, where we were the last one to the party for Pryor (glad the way it worked out actually) and it was just another situation that left us with a tad of egg on our face.  I suppose it doesn't matter who the coach is because he'll be scrounging as it is.  We might as well have a proven winner who can work with what he has and who will worry about recruiting his players in 2011/12.
