Jack Kennedy and the DG Redshirt
so Tate is ineligible, and we are hoping not to burn Gardner's (maybe) redshirt over the bowl game.
If Denard getes dinged (the kind where he had to come out, but we expect him to go back in), could this be the time for Wolverine nation to turn to Jack Kennedy........who will ask not what the team has done for him, but will ask what he can do for the team........for a couple of plays?
with Tate's future looking cloudy (or should that be puffy?), DG looks to step in for 2 years of apprenticeship to Denard, then two years of his own.........if we can avoid using him on Jan 1.
anybody else expecting a Kennedy sighting?

as soon as we have our version of Lamichael James, I think this will be the case.
Hint: I'm lookin' at you Dee

I'm on the Gallon-for-back up bandwagon. Assuming it's just for a few plays, Gallon was a QB in HS and his team ran a similar offense to what we do. If we put him in for spot duty, that would save DG's Red-shirt. IMO

If I was David Brandon I would give RR strict instructions not to burn DG's possible medical redshirt. Anyone out there who still believes RR's fate rests with the results of this game is kidding themselves. RR has made very difficult decisions regarding players' health even when it would have improved the odds of winning a game. The health of the player always came first. I would hate to see that change. If RR is to go, I would like people to remember that he always put the player first. If DRob is really 100% we shouldn't need him, but in a pinch, I would play Kennedy.

"Devin is the backup," Rodriguez said. "He's really felt better. I think he feels as good as he has in a long. Hopefully Denard will stay healthy, but if not, Devin is ready to go."
Perhaps this is RR's final goodbye to A2. Possibly ruining one year of eligibility for the future leader of the Wolverines. You stay classy, San Rodriguez.

Hoping this is more smokescreen than anything. If DG comes in for a few plays and burns that redshirt things are going to get pretty ugly around here. I'm guessing he does not see the field but who knows.

You and RayIsaac...two beautiful peas in a useless pod, endlessly supporting a coach who has now publicly come out with a move which hurts the team in the long run (but gives RR a better chance for a personal W).
Maybe you could actually try to debate the point...? Feel free to say why playing Devin would be best for the team. Wait...not even best...how about "good"? I know that MGoBubble is the last bastion for the RR loyalists, but c'mon now, even the most loyal RR fan has to be furious with this decision.

Answer: he plays and we win the game.

Thanks. See folks...it's not hard to pose an argument. We don't have to agree, but at least it's a decent discussion. I'd counter that position, however, by noting that it is one (exhibition+) game which could cost us (and Devin) an entire year of games for a serious talent. Given that so many RR fans say, "Just think of the future!" shouldn't we also be thinking of the future here?
December 31st, 2010 at 4:27 PM ^
another coaching change, especially for a coach who hasn't really proven anything except that he can find success with upper classmen leadership in a relatively weak conference, than we should all be worrying about the short run, the medium run, and the long run........
DG was QB2 to start the season. He is not going to be moved behind a walk on who hasn't seen the field, no matter what the arm chair coaches think is the right move.
December 31st, 2010 at 4:53 PM ^
Are you talking about the Big East? Or that conference with USC and Oregon? Seems to me (ok, to anyone who has ever watched Big East and Pac10 football) that the Pac10 has some serious teams and the BigEast is terrible. Even with our underwhelming team this year, we trucked the Big East champ. Think we would've done the same to Oregon? That isn't a debate.
The point to consider is that RR fans have been saying for years (and you allude to it with the "upper classmen" thing) that we just need to wait because he is building a program for the future. Well, you don't help the future by burning the redshirt of your future star QB in (essentially) an exhibition game. It's a fun game that we're all excited to watch, but you don't put injured players or redshirts in a game like this. It only harms the future of the team.

The bowl game is why the team plays the season. I am embarassed for you that you refer to it as an exhibition.
You play the players that give you the best chance at winning in every game. Suggesting otherwise is absurd.

This. Yes. Very much.
January 1st, 2011 at 12:41 PM ^
There is no "personal" anything here. This is a team sport, you play to win. The bowl is the culmination of the entire season. You continually show your stupidity and blind bias that you accuse many others of.
Have a great new year, asshole.

Now that RR is done, I'm shocked you still have anything to say. You've angrily supported a failure (along with AAAwhatever and Purplewhatever), insulting and swearing at anyone in your path. At some point, perhaps your tone will change. You'd think that someone so wrong would, maybe, find a drop of humility.

Dahblue, you are an ignorant jackass.

concerning not playing Devin Gardner (to preserve his red shirt), but decided to wait until after the season and do a full review.

it makes me.....sad :(

Whether you're with FA (a very thoughtful point, FA, but I disagree. I will be upset if DG loses his med RS tomorrow) or not (and FYI, I'm with FA on this point - that's a load of crap, that RichRod is trying to screw the team by... um... playing his backup QB potentially?), it's a bummer of a situation.
No matter how you slice it, "Tate ineligible, DG potentially burning RS" is not how I want to end the season.
Let's make this all moot, Shoelace!
December 31st, 2010 at 1:32 PM ^
But Gallon has been practicing some as a QB, no? That's been pretty well documented. So, unless he's always done so, it stands to reason that RR did see this situation coming.

JK's rap career?
December 31st, 2010 at 2:31 PM ^
at least not legitimately, because, once he played, the only way he can redshirt is if he stopped playing as a result of a season ending injury. If he is now well enough to play, we would be attempting to defraud the NCAA if we were to apply for a redshirt for him. I hope we will not do that, and that Brandon would insist on it. That being the case, we should simply announce that Gardner is well enough to play and therefore not eligible for a redshirt whether or not he plays. Then, he can play if he is needed. This is the RIGHT way to do it, and I hope (but do not realistically expect) that we will do it that way.
December 31st, 2010 at 4:55 PM ^
Is he eligible?

Yes, he'd get a redshirt if he sat behind Tate and Denard next season.
December 31st, 2010 at 5:19 PM ^
A player can RS in any year. He has 5 years to play 4 seasons.
Edit: eh, type too slow...
