OT: What's the best Non-Michigan game you have ever been to???

Submitted by CapedBlueSader on
Wanted to see what are some of the best non-michigan football games people have ever been to? I am going to Baton Rouge in November for the LSU/Alabama night game. EDIT: I got my ticket for free as well. A buddy who is an LSU alum wants to show me their rivalry and I am bringing him to UM/OSU next year.

It was Alvarez's 3rd year at Wisconsin. They'd finish 5-6 that year and got the Rose Bowl the following season, but they beat OSU in this game 20-16 and nobody saw it coming. It was a huge upset at the time.

Both before and after a win like that, well, in my opinion Madison can be a great place to party.
Oregon beating Oklahoma in Eugene. Was in the end zone club with Heffeweizen on tap and Outback food at the buffet. Okie may have gotten screwed but game was amazing. Side note: I missed my house warming party because of the game length. Had to buy the Newfoundland in my avatar to get back in my wife's good graces. I'd do it all over again if given the option.
I was at Georgia's drubbing of Arizona State in Tempe a few years back. Stafford and Moreno were on fire. Sat with Georgia fans. They were a blast.

around the turn of the millenium. Almost positive it wasn't 2003, so fairly sure it was a Stanford win and thus a good game to see. (My brother lived in the Bay Area then; his wife was a Stanford alumna and they had season tickets.)

I've actually only seen one game in the Big House. We left Ann Arbor in '75 and I don't get back that often. I've seen a lot of college games, though, so as a result, I've seen a lot of bad football: IU in the late '70s and early '80s, Purdue in the '80s and early '90s, random games here and there.

was there section 9 row 17, at halftime I was walking up to hit the restroom and I hear someone yelling my name when I get by the tunnel to exit. Turns out, my cousin married an appst grad and he was there all decked out, appst gear calling me to come up and meet his friends while they all give me 2 tons of shyte!!!!!! Yep, my cousin, our family is from NKY and meet up in Michigan Stadium...

and imo, this counts as a non michigan football moment cause that was not michigan football!

Been to a handful of cfb stadiums around the southeast. Best game I've been to was Miami @ Clemson in 2005. Clemson lost in 3OT.

Most memorable non-Michigan moment I've ever witnessed in person was Knowshown Moreno hurdling a CMU defender a few years ago...truly jaw dropping moment. My brother (CMU alum) and I did represent pretty well in Athens though. We got there around 7am, had all of my tailgating gear and flew both a M and CMU flag on my 16 ft telescoping flagpole. We were the first to set up in the lot we were in, and the looks on the faces of UGA fans as they arrived were absolutely priceless.

I would have to say UCLA 13, USC 9 in the Rosebowl on 12/4/06, a common thread these days with UCLA, "no one saw that one coming" and its always good to see the evil west coast empire lose. Other than the New Years Bowl Game the only game (USC at the Rosebowl) that is actually sold out in the Rosebowl with UCLA playing. Not the best game seen but the most shocking and interesting, at least out here on the Left Coast.

I went to Game 5 of the '05 NBA Finals between the Pistons and the Spurs. We lost in OT when Rasheed Wallace left Robert Horry wide open to double-team Tim Duncan, letting Horry hit a game-winning 3-pointer. Exciting game, crappy outcome.

I've never been to a non-Michigan college football game. I might try to go to a Cal or Stanford football game sometime.

I can't remember what year it was, but I went to the Wings game where Brett Hull scored the game winner in OT against the Kings when he moved to second all-time in goals scored. Sat right behind the goal he scored in. Absolutely awesome!

The best non-Michigan football game I've been to was the Slippery Rock - Shippensburg game played at the Big House in '79. If you can't watch Michigan, the next best thing is being at the Big House.

Growing up in East Lansing (I know, I know) I did sell coke (the soda) at MSU football games one season. I made about $20 a game. So, in effect, someone did pay me to watch Spartan football. Spartan fans were really obnoxious about getting their straws. I've never understood that and it has stuck with me to this day.

Since moving to LA in '97, I've been to a handful of UCLA games. It's such a letdown. The crowd is lame, the stadium is half full, some cheerleader guy with a microphone instructs the fans when to cheer. The team is usually not very good. The band is mediocre. It's just not the same. I have never been to the Coliseum to see USC. They are pure evil.

I had never been to an Army-Navy game. This experience was up there with the Michigan-ND games in the late 80's when we were both in the top 5. The amazing thing is that between the teams they had 1 win in the entire season coming into the game.

The pregame, the parachute guys, the flyovers, the mids and the cadets, the last-second win on a field goal by Navy, and the singing of the alma maters after the game are something I will never forget.

I have been fortunate to see a number of other non-Michigan games (TN @ UGA 1998, Clemson @ VT on a Thursday night in Lane Stadium in 2006, Miami @ Florida in a night game in the Swamp), but this topped all experiences other than Michigan football.

If you are a college football fan, you need to see an Army-Navy game.

UVA-Georgia Tech, 2001. Actually the first three quarters were about the lamest three quarters in football history. It was like, 14-9 or some crap like that after three. The fourth quarter: seven touchdowns. Seven. I wish I knew what the record was, that might be it. And every single time, the teams both went for two and every single time, they failed. UVA won the game on a hook-and-ladder play for the last score of the game.

1998 NCAA Hockey West Regional Final. Perennial doormat Ohio State upsets #1 overall seed Michigan State in overtime at Yost to go to the Frozen Four.

You'll never hear an Ohio State team cheered louder by Michigan fans again.

A friend of mine, whose family had a long-standing relation with OSU, invited me to see the game because his father wasn't going (just buried his wife). OSU had not beaten USC in 35 years, but ended up getting out to a huge lead. USC roared back, but lost on the last play when it couldn't convert on a two-point conversion to tie. My friend started crying, everyone around us started crying, and we stormed the field. Couldn't help it, even though I was rooting for my friend more than the Beavers. Probably the most powerful sporting event I've ever been to.

I saw Cal crush Tennessee. It was nice to see the SEC get taken down. I also went ND at Stanford in 2005. Stanford nearly pulled off the upset. How times have changed!

How can you use "best" and "non-Michigan" as adjectives for one and the same game? For me, does not compute.

If forced to choose, however, I would say, the first game my 9 year old's team won.

2001 Holiday Bowl - Washington/Texas.

The Holiday Bowls are often good games and this one ended with Washington scoring a TD with less than two minutes left, and then Texas scoring their own TD with about 30 seconds left. Texas won 47-43.

Second best was the 2000 Holiday Bowl in which Oregon beat Texas 35-30. Part of my affinity for the Holiday Bowl is probably due to the fact that I was living in San Diego and knew someone on the Holiday Bowl committee. I was able to get VIP tickets that gave me great seats and access to the official pre-game BBQ. For the Oregon/Texas BBQ they had like 15 different kinds of duck and beef and lots of free drinks. The game was not too shabby either.

I have lived all over the country, so I try to go to games if Michigan isnt on at the same time.

September 29 Alabama #15 Williams-Brice StadiumColumbia, SC JP W 37-36

I was in AIT at Ft Jackson in Columbia and we actually had a weekend pass. This was right after 9/11 and we werent thinking we were getting a pass. Well we did, and one of my friends from back in Michigan was at school at South Carolina, she ended up getting me a ticket to sit in the student section with her. This place was incredible, and the game was incredible. Then I got to party with the chick, who was an ex-girlfriend of mine JR year of HS, lets just say that the whole campus was buzzing that night! I came back after my weekend pass and I told my Sgts that I went to the game, they said they were there too. One Sgts kid was the RB, the other was the QB. I had no idea.

2nd best game was the NCAA Basketball game between Kansas and Northern Iowa. I live in Las Vegas now and went to Oklahoma City with the UNLV Rebels for the tournament. Well they lost to No. Iowa on that Ali Farokhmanesh three. Well most of the UNLV fans changed their flights to leave town, and I still had tickets to the session so I figured I might as well see a Final Four team up close again. I had 3rd row seats, so I was just in awe of how good they were. I had them for all the sessions and instead of selling, I just stayed. Well if No. Iowa didnt do it again! That game was nuts, half of the stands were Kansas State fans, half were Kansas fans, so when No. Iowa was leading, the KSU fans were going nuts. That place went crazy when Farokhmanesh hit another three to put Kansas away for good. I couldnt believe that Kansas lost, I had them winning my brackets, haha! Oklahoma City sucks though, I got arrested the night before for being drunk in public. Coming from Las Vegas, I didnt get why it was such a big deal :)

The only non Michigan game I ever attended was Eastern Michigan v. Miami OH in Oxford OH. I've tried to erase my two years living in Ohio so I can't recall if it was 1994 or 1995. It was awful but Charlie Batch was the Huron QB. I vowed to only attend Michigan games after that experience.

Went to an early regular season Pistons/Wizards game once. Can't really remember who won but there was some dunking and dribbling. And nobody sat in the row in front of me or behind me so I got to kick back and relax. Great game.

We won tickets in the Rose Bowl lottery, but since Moeller went for 2 against Iowa and blew plus combined with Eddie Brown getting away with P.I. on Desmond in the MSU game, I was stuck watching Iowa-Washington. It was entertaining though. Was the highest scoring game in Rose Bowl history and Iowa almost completed an epic comeback.

I've seen:

 • ND v USC at the Coliseum back in the mid-70s when I was a kid.
 • MSU play some crap-stain back in 82 when my sister was a freshman at Misdemeanor State.
 • UConn beat ND last year in South Bend.

None of them stand out as being great games or fantastic experiences. Watching a college football game which you have no vested interest in is a strange phenomena, imo.

What woke me was someone reading from MGoBlog about someone asking other fans about the best non-Michigan game they've ever been to.

I remember my heart racing, my fists flailing wildly, and this desire to yell at the person reading this dastardly message. This is the moment I woke up to ask, "There are other games other than the one Michigan is playing?!! If so, for what purpose? A lame attempt to copy the best I imagine."

Auburn 36, Florida 33. Terry Dean throws 4 interceptions and is replaced by Danny Wuerffel who plays exceptionally until a late game interception of his own gives Auburn the ball back with enough time to score the winning TD to knock off the then #1ranked Gators. Great game. Great atmosphere sitting in the student section in The Swamp.

The Florida faithful was pretty miserable the evening after the game which I could unfortunately relate to. I was in my third year at U of M in 1994 and that season was also the year of the Colorado game that will remain unforgotten. Also, after the Florida game we went to the bar and watched Michigan lose epically to Penn State in PSU's first ever trip to Ann Arbor. For those of you putting 2 and 2 together, yes, I did give up the PSU game in order to road trip to Florida. After Colorado, my heart wasn't all that into Michigan football for a few weeks.

Probably some great high school games that would be meaningless to everyone else. Went to a Lions game on Thanksgiving where the Lions made a comeback vs. Cleveland...after our Uncle made us leave to get home for dinner. But outside of football, I was at a Pistons game in 1989-90 season against the Sixers where the Pistons were down like 6 with under ten seconds left, and Isiah score like 3 times to take the lead. Also was at Game 3 of the 2004 and 2005 NBA Finals. The championship year was better, though neither game was close. Obviously the series end was better, but it was the best basketball environment I had been in. It was super loud, and crazy (though Michigan vs. Duke and MSU in 89-90 was a more exciting finish). Plus, I had an incredibly hot date for it. It's amazing what NBA Finals tickets will get you.

Not best as in BEST, but best as in INFAMOUS.

UM vs. Colo. Kordell Stewart's last second 70 yard hail mary. I've never imagined the Big House could become so quiet. Incredible.
