Final Collection of Lou Holtz Comments
There have been various threads on pieces of this. Here is a final collection of the days worth.
Pre Game-- Said ND was only game he'd pay to see, best place to see a game in America. Crist was going to be breakout QB of the week. Allen was going to be breakout RB of the week. Seriously, he said all three of those things with a straight face. He has no awareness of his homerness.
Post Game- He said ND should be proud of the D, because outside of one player they played well. Does he realize that they still gave up 500 yards? Does he also realize that on Denard's rushing and passing plays, it wasn't just him? Yanno, those guys sometimes block for him and those WR's sometimes catch it, and even run after the catch occasionally. And maybe ND's defense should have done something about those guys blocking for Denard or catching his passes. But who lets rationality get in the way.
Later Post Game-- On Crists final play that he threw out the back of the end zone, he couldn't help but comment on the great protection by the O-line. Even though Crist makes one of the worst throws I've ever seen (completely removing ANY chance of a catch to win the game), even though on that play ND lost, he still had to say something about how great ND is in the face of obvious suck. Mark May pointed out to him that Michigan was rushing 3 vs. 5 blockers, but that doesn't matter to sweet sweet Lou.
I know he's old, but how does ESPN put up with this? It is insane how each week, each and every single week, he picks ND to be the winner and the breakout player and whatever else. Not to mention he perennially picks them to win it all at the beginning of the year. I don't get how ESPN doesn't see how he completely ruins their credibility. It used to make me laugh, but I'm starting to get mad about it.

him anymore. He's just terrible.
September 11th, 2010 at 11:00 PM ^
have a virtual monopoly on what you do, like ESPN does, you do not care about credibility. Remember the Lebron James' "I'm going to the Heat" charade?
When the Dr. Lou segments come on, both my wife and I run for the toilet.
September 12th, 2010 at 5:00 PM ^
When you say "going to the Miami Heat" do you mean "taking my talents to South Beach?" Sure "The Decision" was terrible, and represents everything that is wrong and evil, but thanks to LeBron and ESPN I can now have fun working "taking my talents" into everyday conversations. For example, I'm about to take my talents to the library.
That's why I appreciate Lou, he provides great comedic relief, even if its totally unintentional
September 12th, 2010 at 1:05 AM ^
...that's when you know things are very very wrong.
September 11th, 2010 at 10:35 PM ^
I believe, after the clock hit 0:00, he said, "sufferin' succotash!"

and feels like, "Dude, did you really just spit all over my face?"
September 11th, 2010 at 10:36 PM ^
Most of the country finds ND irrelevant. Therefore, it's kind of like that crazy uncle that shows up to Thanksgiving talking all kinds of jibberish, and everyone just laughs it off as the crazy uncle. If you don't have a chip in the game in regards to ND, you would find him hilarious as well, but unfortunately for us, he makes us hate ND even more.
September 11th, 2010 at 10:37 PM ^
The paper he wrote his comments on is soaking wet...
September 11th, 2010 at 10:37 PM ^
Mark May is also an arse but the only time he ain't insufferable is when he's ragging Old Lou. But it's a testament to how ghastly Mark May is that even when he's on the side of the angels he's all but unendurable.
What a duo!
September 12th, 2010 at 7:23 AM ^
it's quite often.
September 11th, 2010 at 10:38 PM ^
He stays on ESPN because what he adds to their broadcasts is, as far as the actual factual nature of his pronouncements is concerns, inessential. He is there because he is more entertaining than Todd McShay, was an extremely good college football coach, and can tell jokes. May is playing straight man to his wild card. That's just how it is.
Don't take it seriously. Holtz doesn't. And neither does May.
September 12th, 2010 at 1:27 AM ^
They are color commentators on an entertainment broadcast. They don't have to be right, they have to be entertaining. They are not testifying before congress.

September 12th, 2010 at 6:11 AM ^
... that you have your sense of humor examined if you believe any words emitted from Lou Holtz' mouth are humor.
September 11th, 2010 at 10:39 PM ^
Not to mention that Lou is also a cheater. The guy is a scum bag idiot. Almost everything he says is ridiculous or stupid.
September 11th, 2010 at 10:39 PM ^
Did anyone see Mark May's face when he said the ND's defense should be proud? I busted out laughing!
September 11th, 2010 at 11:12 PM ^
it was hilarious, made my wife bust out laughing too
September 12th, 2010 at 12:45 AM ^
we almaost pissed ourselves laughing.

were the best by any player in the US in the last two years. I loved that.

Before the season, everyone talked about Terrelle Pryor, and were practically penciling him in. Now, its "all about Denard", (sorry, couldn't help myself) and the media almost goes out its way to remember that Pryor also played.
September 12th, 2010 at 12:24 AM ^
can suck my little, middle-aged white dick.
Denard is everything.
September 12th, 2010 at 12:42 AM ^
That's just weird and a little pathetic.
September 12th, 2010 at 1:07 AM ^
...that's just a bit over the top.
September 12th, 2010 at 3:23 AM ^
As wrong as that comment is, the honesty is refreshing; and I just spit Cherry Coke on my keyboard.
September 12th, 2010 at 2:40 PM ^
September 12th, 2010 at 12:59 AM ^
It really has to drive OSU fans crazy that on a day that they beat Miami behind a good performance by Pryor (and 4 JH interceptions) that all the media and Heisman hype is about the the "scUM" QB.
Suck it Tressel (Lauer)!!!!

He's college football crazy old grandpa, the one who talks about Johnny U and how it was a better game before the put facemasks on the guys. Plus, he's the last great ND coach, so of course he is going to talk about ND. Trust me, if Desmond was in that chair it would have been pro-Michigan. Holtz is somewhat harmless, and if memory serves me defended RR a couple of times when everyone else was ragging on him, saying it takes time for a coach to make his mark.
September 11th, 2010 at 11:05 PM ^
I can forgive a certain amount of homerism, but Holtz is way over that line. He can't defend the things he says in a remotely credible way. The "one man" comment is pretty much par for the course.
May is a USC homer, but he manages to keep it somewhat under control (although it helps that USC has been pretty damn good for most of the last decade).
To be honest, I usually put it on mute when Holtz starts to talk about Notre Dame.
September 12th, 2010 at 8:04 AM ^
...went to Pitt where he was awarded the Outland Trophy in his senior year. His USC gushing is not homerism, just WWL boosterism. He's got one NCAA national championship ring, two super bowl rings and is a member of the CFB HoF.
That said, it pains me that a famed member of my favorite NFL team (he was also named one of the top 70 Redskins of all time by the team in its 70th anniversary year) can be such a dork on the set, even if it's true (and it is), that much of what is said is scripted and schtick.
September 12th, 2010 at 5:09 PM ^
Apparently he's just jumped on the Trojan bandwagon.

But to give credit to ND (and at a micro level to Holtz) I thought Crist and Allen put on a solid showing (I know, I know, against a "bend-but-don't-break" D, that did more breaking than bending) in the game. I'm certainly not lickin' my chops at the thought of next years game...
September 12th, 2010 at 8:30 AM ^
For the following reasons:
1) Next year's game is in Ann Arbor
2) Michigan will return most of their starters including Denard
3) Armano Allen will be gone and Kyle Rudolph and Michael Floyd could go pro
4) Brian Kelly will still be their coach and Rich Rodriguez will be ours
September 11th, 2010 at 10:46 PM ^
Where did you get the Lou Holtz translator? Is it an app or something?
September 11th, 2010 at 10:50 PM ^
ESPN has to get complaints on him every Saturday, if not for his lisp, for his atrocious homer comments that never end.
September 11th, 2010 at 10:54 PM ^
Last week was the best.
"I wash shurprished by the shhpeed at the Michshigan shkill poshishions."
This would be an idiotic comment even without the lisp
September 11th, 2010 at 10:55 PM ^
I am pretty sure ND had 6 guys protecting Crist from our 3 rushers.
September 11th, 2010 at 10:56 PM ^
I used to atleast respect Lou Holtz. But he's delusional now. ESPN needs to get rid of him; like tomorrow.
September 11th, 2010 at 11:01 PM ^
I say they keep him and make him wear a big red nose, blue wig, white stage makeup, and really oversized glasses. That way, he'll add more comic relief, and no one will mistake what he says for informed opinion.
September 11th, 2010 at 11:02 PM ^
in the upper levels of moxie. Rudolph had extra Moxie. Crist, just a little moxie but not too much.
September 12th, 2010 at 1:09 AM ^
We know Tate Forcier...he's a friend of ours...Dayne Crist, you're no Tate Forcier, even.
September 11th, 2010 at 11:03 PM ^
It is insane how each week, each and every single week, he picks ND to be the winner and the breakout player and whatever else.
So he's like all the other ND fans, then, right?
September 11th, 2010 at 11:05 PM ^
...if Holtz is actually still alive?
Lately, I can't shake the feeling that ESPN is pulling a "Weekend at Bernie's" on us.
September 11th, 2010 at 11:06 PM ^
I like most of the ESPN College coverage except for Lou Holtz and Lee Corso...theyre just annoying. Mark May was annoying especially when ESPN did the whole comparing USC to the best college teams of all time...and then they lost to Texas. May can be bearable though.
September 11th, 2010 at 11:10 PM ^
would be more appropriate with Yakety Sax playing while he spoke.
September 11th, 2010 at 11:09 PM ^
Does Lou Holtz have a speech problem??? I couldn't remember gauging by some of your comments. I'm sure you guys would love to see him on the air with Cowturd. ROFLCOPTER.
But seriously, the guy makes dumb comments, but making fun of the way he talks is even more dumberist. Let's grow up a little. We're Michigan Men.
September 11th, 2010 at 11:10 PM ^
It's kind of funny at this point, I mean, I can't even get mad.
September 12th, 2010 at 1:03 AM ^
I agree, it's kind of how I feel about all of NBC's coverage to be fair. I think it'd actually embarrass me if I was a ND fan.
