In a pickle: UW @ UM or NU and U of I at Wrigley
As most people know, U of I is playing Northwestern at Wrigley Field November 20th. This is a unique setting for a college football game, albeit it is NU and U of I. A game at Wrigley has not occurred in a long time (Chicago Bears Dec. 13 1970) and there is no gaurantee that this will happen again. Unfortunately, this is the same weekend as when the Badgers come to town, Michigan's last home game.
I live in Chicago, but make it to most if not all Michigan home games. I am already missing the Iowa game (Friend's Wedding...Argh!), which besides the UW, MSU and UConn games, this is one that I was really looking forward to. My girlfriend (U of I grad) understandably wants to go the Wrigley game. I have repeatedly dragged (not forcefully) her up to Ann Arbor, even for a few u of I games. She will be at the Ucon game for sure among others. She has taken me to Champaign a number of times as well. I should also mention, that we did go to the Rose Bowl at the expense of missing Lloyd's last game.
So here it is..
What do I do?

Why is this even a question? There is no acceptable way to pass on a Michigan game.

Girls Night!
Let the girls go. They will probably have more fun anyway. If you go she'll know that you want to be somewhere else and any visible sign from you could result in problems.
Anyways, I know that I would really really wanna see Michigan take on Wisco if I could be there.

would say, "You can't be serious."

I live in Chicago, too. All I can say is, this is a delicate situation. I would like to join the chorus of "ARGH! F HER! DUDEZ RULE! DON'T BE A PUSSY!" or something like that...but, in all honesty, I don't know what I'd do if I were you. I don't think it's a situation that annonymous people whom you've never met, and don't know you and your lady's relationship, can really weigh in on intelligently. Ask your friends/most trusted advisors who know both of you and went to U of M. They will be the best source for guidance. Obviously, the selfish thing is to go to the UM game. That's a no-brainer. But...perhaps you can split the baby and watch the UM game on TV and still go to the UI-NW game. That way, girlfriend's happy, and you get to watch the game. But then again, what do I know about your relationship?

In 2003 I went to Wrigley to watch my Cubs play the Braves in the playoffs. It was a fall Saturday. I took a hand-held tv and watched Iowa/Michigan while in the 6th row.
I couldn't turn down playoff tickets. I had to watch MIchigan football. Solved.

I live in indianapolis and make it to only one or two michigan home games a year. Even if the Wiscky game was the only one I had tickets for this year and I was in your situation, I'd be selling them and going to Wrigleyville for an extremely rare FOOTBALL game at the friendly confines. No question. You'd be one of, what? 30,000-40,000 in almost the last half century to see a game there? CFB history is being made.
Plus I can't imagine the fusion of pure unadulterated awesomeness that you'd get combining a college football gameday atmosphere with that of Wrigleyville.
The only caveat to this is if we're still undefeated. Then your ass should be A-square bound.

I'm sorry, but Northwestern vs Illinios will never make college football history!

It depends entirely on whether Wrigley will be filled with the same people that attend Cubs games

this should not be a question at all:
1. Wrigley is decrepit and smells like piss - you couldn't pay me to go there
2. Both of these teams are god awful and unless you went to either of them I cannot fathom why you would willingly sit through a game
3. it's Michigan vs. Wisco at the big house - i can't think of anywhere else i'd rather be that saturday
4. You're probably a cub fan - i.e. you don't care about winning and are there for the "experience", whatever that means, in which case you should probably just stop watching sports all together
5. Stop letting your probably below average girlfriend wear the pants in the relationship
6. Go to Ann Arbor without your girlfriend and rail a sorostitute in the back of ricks

you're not engaged or married and are in your early-mid 20's?

I honestly cannot believe Phil's comment is sitting at a -1. That's hilarious.
August 26th, 2010 at 2:15 AM ^
But my advice: Don't play the "Missed Lloyd's last game" card for this. That, my friend, is something to hold onto for a very special day.

Wrigley sucks. You only get to enjoy the Big House experience 7/8 times a year...the decision is obvious.

Man I feel bad for you to have to see the USC beat down of the illini. Honestly go the Michigan game tell the lady that yes wrigley is rare but NW is going to beat the Illini anyways.
August 26th, 2010 at 4:16 AM ^
Did anyone else read this headline and think it was talking about Nebraska and Iowa? To those of us outside Chicagoland, it's not necessarily obvious whom "NU" and "U of I" refer to.
August 26th, 2010 at 4:44 AM ^
While missing the Wisky/UM game is a big deal. I would go to Wrigley Field for the NW/Illini game because who knows when you might get an opportunity like that again in your life. Now if Michigan and Wisky are both undefeated coming into the game, disregard everything I said and go to the "new" big house
August 26th, 2010 at 4:54 AM ^
I've seen hundreds of Michigan football games. I've never seen a football game at Wrigley. Seriously, ignore any cockbag who wants to act like they're the the arbiter of what makes a good fan. Do what feels right for you and fuck everyone else.

It is clear that she has compromised for you in the past, and it is clear that she is even doing so this season in letting you drag her to some Michigan games. While to us Michigan fans it may seem like a M game is the end all be all of the world, we have to understand that for our friends (or in this case girlfriend) it might not be the case. She has been understanding of your love for Michigan football, and let's be honest- she hasn't had as much to be happy about football-wise in her life as an U of I fan as you have with U of M, the last two seasons not withstanding.
Go to Wrigley and take the brownie points you will score with her for going along with enthusuasm and being excited for her and this opportunity. If it is something she is excited about and really wants to do, go with it and you will reap the rewards with a half-dozen more Michigan games down the road because she will appreciate you showing interest in what she likes.

and have clearly never been in a real relationship before.
if you value your relationship then go with your gf. if you don't then go to Michigan.
it's that simple.

Watching football in Wrigley would be pretty unique--you noted that it's something that hasn't happened in 40 years. I say go to the NU/UI game (*gasp*) and watch whatever of the UM/UW game you can at one of the many watering holes in Wrigleyville. Unless something tragic happens, you'll have many more oppertunities to watch UM or go to A2 than you will to watch football at Wrigley. You might be able to work out a little quid pro quo w/ your girlfriend as well--maybe (god willing) you guys watch M go bowling this year...
August 26th, 2010 at 9:57 AM ^
I live behind Wrigley...and I'm assuming your pretty embarrassed for asking this question, or even toying with this idea. Get to Ann Arbor and then do yourself a favor and buy the NU - ILL DVD. Thanks.

Yeah do Wrigley and Tivo Michigan. It will be impossible for you not to know what happens. But what a great evening to come in from the cold, make a hot Irish coffee with extra Irish and kick back to the U of M game in comfort.
