Sporting News' Top 100 Preseason List.
Below 4(!) MAC teams, including BGSU. One spot ahead of Louisiana Tech. Purdue all the way at 39. Great work Sporting News.
New QB, 11 returning starters? Inexperienced o-line? Does not sound like a formula for success to me.
But, Danny Hope is 10% jerk and Colin Cowherd tells me that's a recipe for success.
I think Danny Hope's jerk percentage is closer to 50.
I don't expect to be in the Top 25 but damn.
MTSU at 43? Purdue at 39? Duke above both us and Wake Forest? Any ACC teams not named GaTech or VaTech above 60 = joke.
But the biggest joke of all = Notre Dame at 29
28th or better going into week 3 of the season after we kick the shit out of #28 UConn and #29 Notre Dame...
Actually, I buy that MTSU ranking. They are pretty good and explosive.
They are going to flat house Minnesota on the opening Thursday of the season. Of course, given these rankings, that's not really a bolg statement.
Regardless, I think the Racers will be good this season.
And, without having broke it down, you're being a bit hyperbolic on the ACC. But, hey, nothing goes better with college football than E-pinion does. We shall see this fall.
but this list has them as being better than 5 SEC teams. Do you believe MTSU would really finish 7th in the SEC this year?
Not in those terms, but I dont think the 43rd ranking is that big of a reach.
But, I guess I could handicap and/or see MTSU beating Vandy, Miss State, UK and, this year, Tenn. I know I would take the points in a hypothetical 2010 matchup, for whatever thats worth And thats not a knock on those teams, itsjust that I think MTSU could beat them. And, if I set about the task of ranking all these teams, I could see myself putting them ahead of them as well.
I wouldnt pick them 7th in the SEC, but I could see myself ranking them in that 43rd range. So, I guess that means, like everybody else in this thread, I see problems throughout these rankings. I prefer actual bowl projections anyway than rankings once we get beyond the top 10.
More fuel for the fire. It'll be a nice start to the season to re-dedicate Michigan Stadium with an "upset" of #28ish UConn.
MTSU above Stanford, Ok State, UCLA, Cal, Clemson, the list goes on.
I know we haven't had a winning season in 3 years, but we should be ranked at least twenty places higher.
3 years? Imformative fan does not apply to you.
ranking 100 teams when there are only 20 more to go? I'm of the mind that anything above 30 is likely a useless exercise as far as "ranking" goes, even in season. But 100 days before kick off? That's throwing darts for about 70% of these picks.
I like it.
Brian Kelly already has the Fightin' Irish as a borderline Top 25 squad. Looks like ND fans will once again have unreasonable expectations. We are ranked lower than a BGSU squad that lost most of its offensive production.
I only wish that Penn State were somewhere in the 10-15 range.
THEY DON'T WEAR HATS!!!!1!!11!!
BLARGHBLARGHBLARGH
isn't their QB coming of a torn achilles and missed spring ball? and the backup is a tight end?
I love it when the other guy has overblown expectations and Michigan has expectations that are too low.
If so, I plan on making a lot of money this year.
Can't find the link.
RR needs to post this on the locker room door. Thanks, sporting News!
I sure as shit would.
There are only 3 teams on our schedule ranked lower than us. I don't see any logical way that you could rank Michigan that low
I want to shock the world in 2010.
By taking a shit on the Editors desk at The Sporting News.
..I would "visit" the freep first.
280 NCAA football teams go to bowl games so I guess they think we'll be in one of those.
Aren't there 35 bowl games in 2010 and thus 70 teams? So it looks like they think we'll get snubbed again!
I don't really get your joke.
I think that he was going for sarcasm and somewhat missed the mark.
I thought the "280 teams" thing was such an exaggeration that it was clearly sarcasm.
I know sarcasm is hard to pick up in writing . . . but it's not impossible. Come on, people.
There are what, 120 teams? Why not put a list out for all.
Because the author of that list probably thought there were only 100 teams....
Nowhere to go but up.
until around #4. We should all just disregard this piece of shit.
on bgsu ....
this list is bull shit
Literally it's pretty much the entire nation against us at this point.. can't wait until we storm out and beat that #28 team on the list.
Is there really a single sports reporter on this planet who could intelligently put together a list like this? IMHO, to be able to justify this list, the reporter should be able to answer the following proposition:
True or False: "Troy's (#90) linebacking corps and secondary could easily shut down Wyoming's (#88) measly passing attack, especially given their lack of a proven run threat. Troy should be ranked higher than Wyoming."
Don't know if this is BS? Then don't put out a top 100!
So, according to SN's rankings, they would "predict" a 3-9 record this year when matching #71 UM verse others' rankings. With a home-field-advantage victory over a slightly better Bowling Green team, and victories over UMASS and Illinois.
Maybe 4-8 if a #71 UM can win on the road at #78 IU.
Wow
I think we finished 70th in rivals end of the season rankings last year. That's crazy that somehow SN would drop us below last year. a 5-7 Michigan team would finish at least in the top 4 of the MAC - but apparently not according to them.
71??!!!! Are you kidding me, that list is terrible from top to bottom.
That's what got me the most.
Yessssssssss. I love it. I wish we were ranked this low before every season.
I am really optimistic that Denard Robinson will be shredding defenses like hash browns at Denny's this fall... When we beat MSU and are still undefeated people will start to turn their heads.
He has mentioned Denard before Tate two days in a row on ESPN when talking about this years O.
obligatory "can't wait until september" comment
i hear a lot of shit from badger fans. If they finish 8 (which I highly doubt) i am in for a long season.

Winning the first two games will get us near the top 25. To actually get in, we will need some serious style points methinks. Heres to hoping Iowa stays vastly overrated.
Just means that we will make a bigger jump.
I kniw Brian Kelly is a good coach but ND ranked all the way up there? Cmon ND lost their QB and WR. Their defense blew it a lot last year. I dont rank em that high at #29. To be reasonable maybe #41. Still ahead of us so we can upset them still. But if ND is at #29, when we kill them, it's to our advantage. But I just dont like how overrated ND is.
lol, rankings suck. I prefer preseason bowl projections after the top 10. It makes really justify things a bit more, in all aspects.
Regardless, here's something to think about.
I really hope UConn is ranked headed into 9/4. We know Michigan will not be. But, I feel Michigan wins that game. And, I am pretty confident that Michigan will be favored per the oddsmakers.
I've mentioned this before, and its hardly an infallible system, but it works a lot more than it fails: Always bet the unranked favorite over the ranked team.
We saw this work against us last year in the MSU game, when Sparty won and covered as an unranked favorite over a ranked team.
Anyway, just something to think about to maybe ease some concerns about the opener. We'll have history on our side if the above situation plays itself out.
