Whatever
1/1/2018 – Michigan 19, South Carolina 26 – 8-5, end of season
[Marc-Gregor Campredon]
I don't know how people get mad about this shit still. I just turn off, because for the last decade Michigan football has been either a disappointment or in a brief interim period that sets you up to be disappointed. But yes many many people still get fucking furious about Michigan football for some reason.
I'm tired of talking about it. I'm tired of this cycle that always seems to be at the bottom. I'm tired of this toxic-ass fanbase screaming at stuff. I could muster some takes, I guess, but I've already said them and anyway they seem beside the point. December was nice since it lacked football. 2018, so far, is bad because it had football.
In a situation like that I'd rather not talk about football. Especially because I have nothing left to say. Maybe it'll be better next year. Maybe it won't. Either way it's a meaningless distraction on the way to the grave. Eat at Arby's.

Hey now...sometimes they will also go 9-4 or maybe even 10-3.

We're going undefeated next year and will win the National Championship.

Either you don't know what I'm talking about, in which case, you really should consider getting a new "fave " word as this one is a tad loaded. Or you do know, which is far worse.
And it must be a fave as you used it again below.

Eh, that particular word has some pretty awful recent history, Mabel. I cringe every time I see someone use it, especially in the awful context (which yours wasn't). Still, I don't want to associate you with "them".

I think we expected John OKorn to suck, that wasn't much of a surprise. He was just a stop-gap in an expected down year.
I definitely did not expect our QB of the future to be a flaming shitnado as well. Now I don't feel great about the future either.

Peters actually played reasonably well against Wisconsin (which was the first time he was ever given any leash), given that the offensive line was trying to get him killed and Wisconsin has a very good defense.
It was surprising that he did not look more capable yesterday.

Not really shocked at the outcome. Two South Carolina grad friends of mine were telling me two weeks ago that their team and fanbase were pretty jacked about beating Michigan. Anybody here excited about playing South Carolina? Despite our decade-long 'slump,' our name still has some cache and other teams have no problem getting up for us, and whenever our offense plays like it did from the get-go yesterday, it's hard to expect a victory.
After what I saw this year, I certainly didn't expect a walkover win yesterday. A squeaker at best. I thought we'd get better as the season progressed, but for many of the reasons pointed out in the blog, it didn't happen. Most obvious was our quarterback play, which seemed to be guided by Murphy's Law for most of the season. It can only be better next year.
As pissed and disappointed (mostly pissed) as I was for most of the game. my boiling point was actually reached when ESPN's little SEC toadie announcers pulled out the anti-Harbaugh rants from Amani Toomer and splashed them all over the screen. I was astounded. Do recruits see shit like that? Of course. I can't believe the lengths they'll go to when promoting their SEC bias, and it was at this point that I shut the game off. It's for this very reason that I hope that Harbaugh and the team come back with a vengeance next year and force all these same SEC sycophants to eat their words.

Ha! Thank you. My brain knows this, but my fingers did not get the memo this morning.

Let's not go overboard the other direction. It's not surprising we won eight games. Ten wins, you could make that argument.
I still am optimistic for the future but this was a disappointing season, no way around that.
January 2nd, 2018 at 10:43 AM ^
I mean, we don't know about the offensive line and improvement because they were down three starters. TBH, seemed like they actually did fairly well in pass protection yesterday with most of the issues stemming from the RBs not picking up blocks. Could be wrong there though.
I think part of the expectation problem is how people rate the defense. You saw it in Ace's recap: The defense gets high praise for letting a 19-3 lead go in about 6 seconds. Everyone has no problem shitting on the offense as really bad (which is correct), but almost no one wants to downgrade the defense from "AWESOME HELLFIRE IN YOUR FACE ALL GAME*" to "almost very good".
*If all game means 1 to 2 quarters

This year is a huge letdown but we are coming off back to back 10 win seasons. I have a lot of gripes but am not ready to jump off a cliff. We have been in a deep hole and it is tough getting out. I hope we are smart enough to make some offensive changes but I'm going to take a deep breath and enjoy football season being over for a while.

"Stupidity is doing same thing and expecting different results."
In this case it's "watching the same team and expecting different results." I don't know what everyone was expecting to happen. The calendar changed, but that was the same 2017 team.
January 2nd, 2018 at 10:21 AM ^
because it's also called "practice".
but yeah, this team is this team.
January 2nd, 2018 at 10:41 AM ^
Ah, so the one month of bowl practice is somehow magically different than the 5 months of offseason practice and the previous 3 months of in-season practice. Got it.
January 2nd, 2018 at 10:47 AM ^
Seemed that way against Florida in 2015-16 right?
January 2nd, 2018 at 10:52 AM ^
Actually, it seemed like a team that had a good season played well in a bowl game.
January 2nd, 2018 at 10:58 AM ^
Nah.
Lot of talk after that game about improvement on the offensive line and in the RBs.
January 2nd, 2018 at 10:55 AM ^
This game, we were Florida.
We gotta stop hanging around them. Bad influence.
January 2nd, 2018 at 12:49 PM ^
Well, for sure we had the same weaknesses as we had all year. Can't argue with that.
What we hoped was that Peters was at least working up to being an OK quarterback and he seems to have taken a step back not forward from when he got hurt at Wisconsin.
The result though was that we lost another game where even a "C" quarterback could have won it in every game but Penn State. And even then we were down by 1 shortly before the half.
Maybe Peters will get better over the next couple years, but if he's our stater at Notre Dame next year is probably going to be another long year. He's not going to get that much better that fast apparently

but I cant keep saying it is the "coordinators" fault. It is totally Harbaughs fault. He can, and should be, calling plays. He is the one choosing the coordinators and needs to be held resposible for this shit show of a coaching staff, which as we ll know, is one of the most expensive staffs in history.
January 2nd, 2018 at 12:54 PM ^
Yes, of course. A redshirt freshman QB throwing to a true sophomore and true freshman receivers? Yes, obviously there is "fault" in that not working.
Haters really need to go back and review the 2013, 2014 and 2015 classes and how many contributors there are. It's silly to not recognize that.
Tell me that Myers and Dantonio with a handful of year 3rd, 4th and 5th year players and the rest in years 1 and 2 would regularly beat a Harbaugh team 8 years into his tenure with five full classes of players as you expect Harbaugh to do to them. Go ahead, say that
January 2nd, 2018 at 1:24 PM ^
I am not sure what your second paragraph means or what the question is. I can tell you that ubran will continue to beat harbaugh on a regular basis (like 4 out of 5 years), and dantonio will continue to have winning record against him. I dont see harbaugh making OSU and MSU games a team emphasis, so we will continue to play flat against MSU and OSU will continue to field a better coached and more talented teams than us.
It's the third year for harbaugh, and he is yet to win a game we were not expected to win, which in my mind is key indication of a good coach. In every important game, he comes coaching tight or afraid of letting his players play. it's a weird thing, I can't explain it but i noticed in all the key games, his coaching changes from confident coaching opening things up to making everything tight and playing in a small box.

The best part of the game for me was sitting in the comfy rocking chair with my 7 week old son (#4 kid) in my arms snoozing away. That was nice. The game sucked, but I'll remember the game not because UM lost, but having that nice time hanging with my son. Happy New Year, y'all, and Go Blue.
