Usually around Thanksgiving we are with the part of my family that went to Ohio State. Every year I have to either watch the game with buckeye fans or in the bathroom on my phone, the latter being the one I prefer. I usually leave after the game just so I don’t snap at anyone or be a dick towards the in-laws.

Wife's family is from Cleveland. A couple of my her sibs, along with some nephews, are OSU fans and in some cases, grads. Unfortunately for me, what goes around, comes around. I met my wife at a golden time. In our first dozen years together, Michigan had 9 wins, 1 tie, and 2 losses. It was wonderful. I wore my Michigan gear with pride. Unfortunately, around 2001, the dark ages began.

The fascinating thing for me is that one nephew is a lawyer and a sports agent, representing several recent and current Michigan football players. Even though he went to OSU, he has a lot of respect for JH and how Michigan is run and how (most) Michigan players carry themselves.

with older fans, of both programs. The rivalry has swung back and forth so many times, and so many great games have been played between the two schools, that I think it takes decades of fandom to truly appreciate The Game.

It has been long enough though.  I'd give up some toes, maybe even a foot, to have Michigan win the next 8 games against OSU.

I'm glad I live in Los Angeles. I don't know a single OSU or MSU (knew one like 8 years ago but he moved out of state) or ND fan or even UM fan besides my parents.

Heck when I was growing up out here I thought of ND as our biggest rival as they'd beat us so often in our first game of the year and ruin our season ( so much so we moved the game back to the 2nd week). Meanwhile MSU wasn't a threat when they weren't cheating and OSU would go undefeated and then gloriously lose to us.

He does keep us honest.  He takes us out of our homer echo chamber every now and then.

He adds a little reality check to some of our own self-created myths.

Like the one that says that all of a sudden our offensive game plan can be to just line up and run the ball into 10 man boxes:

It was also disappointing that despite the outstanding rushing day, when it came down to crunch time, the running game failed. Leading 20-17, Michigan got the ball back with just 3:27 remaining on the clock. Indiana was out of timeouts, so all Michigan needed to do was move the ball 10 yards on three carries. Higdon went for 2, 2, and 3 yards, and then the Wolverines punted.

Or the one that says O'Korn takes care of the ball now:

He threw zero interceptions on the day, which is more Indiana’s fault than to O’Korn’s credit.

He's the mirror that shows if we have something stuck in our teeth on a date.

We don't always like it, but its usefull that somebody points it out.

Yes, I was actually editing my post to put that in when you commented and locked it.

Here is the rest of it:

Indiana then drove the ball 42 yards for the tying field goal. It didn’t cost Michigan this game, but it could cost them their next one. What good is rushing for 271 yards if you needed 274 yards to win?

considerable "assistance" on their game tying drive.

All in all I'm thrilled that we can pull out a win when the refs appear to have different sets of rules for different teams.  It's what we have to do.  And once in a while we do get a break.

as a milennial, I can recall only ONE win against OSU and TWO wins against MSU very well. I'm 20 years old and I can honestly say I have never seen the dominace so many Michigan fans feel intitled too. My generation has no recolition of Michigan football striking fear into opponents hearts and fans confidence. To so many of people my age Michigan is a PUSHOVER, and it honestly hurts to say that. I hope Harbaugh can change this, but 1-5 in three years isn't gonna do it. OSU owns us, and it could take a stretch of dominance similar to theirs just to get us viewed in the same boat as them. MSU is slowly making their way towards us too. I have trust in Harbaugh and the staff, and espcially the players. This is my first post, maybe its nice to see a young persons perspective. But I will always believe in the maize and blue.

Although I'd be happy right now with ONE win over the buckeyes I remember how sweet it was to own them back in the 90's. I really don't know that there are adjectives in existence that fully describe what it was like. We'll get our turn in this rivalry. Sooner rather than later, I hope. In the meantime I'll continue to treasure the memories of the John Cooper era.

I'm assuming that they have evidence that coach Harbaugh isn't the Michigan version of J Cooper. Please present it so I can feel better about all of this... Thanx in advance

You can't be serious with this question, right? If you can't look at what he did with other programs, or the fact that it took so super home cooking last year -- in year two -- nothing will suffice as evidence to you.

Harbaugh has played a fully operational Ohio State program twice in his first two years as a head coach, just barely separated from a 5-7 season and with quarterbacks cobbled together from nothing on the roster. In the first game, he got blown out. In the second game, he lost very questionably in triple OT on the road. I think it may be a bit early to forecast doom.

Thanks for sharing your personal perspective.  You are the exact same age as my son - he's 20 and a junior at Michigan.  He doesn't agree with anything you said.   He also said some other things but I don't want to be hurtful so I won't repeat them.  After all there's room for all different opinions here.  Again, welcome!

I do not attend the University of Michigan, I applied and got in but they didn't have Special Education (my major). I go to a different Michigan college so I'm not around die hard Michigan fans like he is, even though I sure wish I was. I hear all the time from different people from all over the country that aren't even MSU or OSU fans about how Michigan is irrelevant. I will never agree with that and I think they are the greatest football team on earth and I will die in Michigan jersey. Its unfortunate that this stigma has come to Michigan, but I think it is  very clear that Michigan football is not on the pedestal it used to be and I hope to see it rebuilt. My generation questions everything and demands results! And the faster the better! They live in the now and have no regard for any history or appreciate it. So lets hope we change this fast, and tell your son Go Blue!

You Only Live Twice

I wish more people in all age groups did that more.  It's part of being alive.

Not sure about the "pedestal."  That's more of a personal feeling, I guess.  Since my kid went to his first game when he was 4, with my dad, he doesn't really think about a pedestal so much as he loves Michigan, loves watching them play, is elated when they win, and depressed when they lose.  Like you he isn't old enough to remember anything about Bo.

After raising two millenial kids I've also come to realize that stereotypes about what millenials are all about... are just as inaccurate at times, as any other stereotype.  Millenials often do care very much about history and tradition.  Millenials often have an amazing work ethic, arguably they've had to learn to apply themselves much more so than our generation did, in order to have any hope of realizing their goals.  Millenials also can often, surprisingly, take a tolerant and a long range view of everything from politics to sports.

Best wishes for your academic career and future endeavors!

Who doesn’t understand how the world or college football works. I get what I want, and I want it now! *stomps foot And can you please not speak for an entire generation. And then use your claimed generational flaws as an excuse for your stupidity.

Urban Meyer has had plenty of QBs excel in college and go on to do nothing on Sundays, if they even make it there. His QBs vs Harbaugh QBs says nothing about coaching or development and everything about the systems they run.

Gerd does have a way of zeroing in on the most significant aspects.  It was a somewhat painful reminder of how much this game rested on Higdon.  I can't blame him for that last 3 and out.  IU figured out that's what we were going to do.

Although, Gerd, you weren't the only one to notice.  Half the guys on this board were saying the same thing about Higdon.

The prevailing opinion is that O'Korn is locking on to one receiver, then its yakety sax if that dude is covered.  It also seems like we're not sending as many guys out into routes.  If we're simplifying the game plan that much, what do we risk if we play Peters?  If it's essentially, "throw to the first read or throw it away", can't Peters do that?

I hope JOK turns it around on Saturday, but I really want to see Brandon get a shot with the offense for at least a half against Rutgers.

If I thought that a coach like Urban fu*king Meyer would have made a difference in our program... I don't know how to answer that

lilpenny1316

October 17th, 2017 at 11:49 PM ^

Denard and especially Devin would've flourished in Meyer's offense.  After Hoke's first season, I had secretly wished that we would've kept RichRod for one more mediocre season so we could make a run at Urban.  We probably would've lost out to OSU anyway, but I thought his offense would've made us unstoppable with either Denard or Devin.

Love the line

"My main concern for Michigan this coming weekend, however, is that the Wolverines will be looking past Penn State with Rutgers looming the week after."

That actually made me laugh out loud, and I needed it.

Penn State is being placed on a pedestal this week, but why not view it as a tee instead?

Michigan has everything they need to win this game, provided they don’t lose it first.
