My point is that saying we have the "highest scoring" offense is nothing more than a vanity metric padded by blowouts over bad teams.

We lost to Ohio State despite the fact that the defense only gave up 10 points in regulation - 7 of which came on a short field after an interception.

We put up 13 points against an Iowa team that surrendered 38 to Northwestern, 41 to Penn State and 35 to Purdue.

We did not have the "highest scoring" offense in the B1G in the games where it really counted.

Maybe we had the highest points against Rutgers, but others crushed them too. So you want to say games against bad teams don't count? I bet everyones point totals drop because good teams with better defenses stop good offenses more frequently. That's how it works.

Don't try the BS of saying we're the only team to have inflated stats against bad teams.

It shows real and very substantial progress.  In recent years the offense struggled against lesser defenses regularly.   Not this year.

It shows that the JH offense is really hard to defend.

The fact that it stalled against FSU and OSU just shows that the talent level on the offensive side of the ball is not elite yet.

But the fact they it was damn near unstoppable against all others (except Iowa and every team has a game every year where they just play poorly; see Clemson v. NC State) shows that the concepts, mix of plays, etc., is really good.

The problem with the offense was not with the concepts, play calling, etc.  The problem is that there was solid talent at all/almost all positions, but no elite talent at even 1 single position.

[edit: o.k. on second thought Jake Butt was elite level talent at the TE position.  Still, the general point remains.]

I entirely believe that this offense or a slightly improved version of it (once Harbaugh/Drevno get high ceiling prospects and coach their own recruits) could win the Big Ten or the CFB. Consider the fact that we were 5 points away from an undefeated season, and the Big Ten was the strongest it has been in the last decade.

He has a few things going for him:

1. He has a good track record

2. OL was in the worst shape of any position of the team when Harbaugh and Co. took over

3.  OL is also one of the hardest position to play well early.

They need to have hit on the kids they recruited last year and are recutiing this year to get the offense to reach it's potential sooner than later but i'm opomistic the offense will be elite once depth builds on the OL.  They are already getting elite talent at the skill positons.

The OL is still in the worst shape of any position on the team and the OL is going to be even younger next season.  So I see it, he has his track record and that's about it.  The offense has definitely improved since Drevno and Harbaugh took over, but to the point where we feel like we have a top 3'ish OC?

Not my money, and good for Drevno, but I just feel like if you're going to be paying an assitant top 3 money, you should get your money's worth, and I just haven't seen anything that makes me feel like he's worth that.

I am not being argumentative by asking...

Who would be a better OC for Michigan at this point in time?

And the answer has to deal with the reality that the OC has to (1) run the kind of offense that Harbaugh is building, (2) get along with Harbaugh, and (3) fit within the structure of the current offensive coaching staff (so no OCs that duplicate other position groups already staffed).

I honestly don't know.  Just don't have the knowledge of who is out there as an OC that fits what Harbaugh wants to do.  Maybe the raise and extension buys Michigan/Harbaugh peace of mind considering the precarious situation the OL and offense is in.  Drevno was getting interest from smaller schools as a HC, so this buys them continuity at a time they can't afford any upheaval on offense/OL.

And hey, its not my money.  Michigan has a shit ton of it, and can do whatever they like with their cash.  Just feel weird that they are paying him as a top 3 OC when I don't know that many would list him as one of the top 10 OCs in CFB.

Several reasons:

  • A raise means our coordinators make more than they would as head coaches outside of the P5, encouraging them to stay until a huge opportunity comes up
  • Appearance of stability
  • Encourages future assistant coaches to consider Michigan
  • Potential buy out terms to discourage leaving early

Arranged marriages... the sons/daughters of the coaches get betrothed to each other and/or the sons/daughters of other UM staff/faculty.  Alliances are formed and the resulting children from these marraiges go on to coach an even stronger team.

It'll work.

He had a solid offense with an average to every definition of the word OL and a first year QB who looks limited but could be solid. We still have shown an ability to move the ball. We've certainly improved. Alabama just fired it's OC and their fans wanted his head after they CRUSHED Washington in a semifinal. You're not going to find some amazing answer here...at the end of the day these guys don't play. Drenvo is a GREAT OC. If Bama is unhappy with their options...we need to realize you don't have to have Josh McDaniels to win. My point is Bama doesn't have some awesome amazing OC that we need in order to reach elite status. What they do have are DUDES all over the field...I'd much rather have those than someone we consider a step up at OC. We're good on coaches...let's go get Bama/Clemson type PLAYERS.

Using the Alabama OC as an example doesn't really apply here - while their offense is successful it is debatable how much can be attributed to Kiffin.  Adding in that he is an asshat with a primadona mentality, he was never going to stay long.  Not that their new OC will be that much different, but whatever works...

Awesome news!!!! We need consistency for awhile. Drevno and Brown now provide that. Let's see what happens when they have their guys as juniors. If it doesn't work out, move on...but I'm certain it will and it's definitely what's best for the program. Our guys deserve it with all of the turnover they've had to deal with. Keep this group together and let's make things happen! Along those same lines let's go get Weist, Dougherty, or Soup back to coach the WRs.

FSU DL ripped the OL apart, as they've done to pretty much every team this year.  The coaches should still take responsibility for bad scheme to counter FSU's stunts/twists and letting the free man rip through unblocked.  To their credit, the OL adjusted well in the 2nd half after a disgusting first half.

Heck no. Cause after we win this National Championship in the next 2-3 years? He gone. And rightfully so. I'll wish him well because he'll be the hot name in football and headed to UCLA to replace Mora or ND to replace Kelly or wherever. I don't care as long as we get one of those golden vaginas.

It's good for stability and likely recruiting, but so far the OL play and play calling have been less than stellar. Let's hope those both improve quickly or this rebuilding process is going to take 5 years or more.

I remember Kalis saying that he wished he had Drevno as his coach his whole career, referring to how much he has learned. While I don't think we have any evidence to say he's the best OL coach in the world, I also don't think we should judge him based off guys like Kalis who were likely a bit damaged from a lack of good coaching in their early careers. Jury is still out on Drevno with Michigan, and we won't have a good assessment for a few years years. I always liked his track record, however, and the offensive stats Michigan put up the past two years was really remarkable considering the lack of elite position groups.

Exactly...truthfully...the only reason people don't give him MORE credit with the OL is because they were 4*+ guys. Blame the recruiting rankings. Those guys were never world beaters. They were never going to turn into Bama. Do we not remember what that OL was under Funk? I know they were young but come on...I see freshman and sophomores who can contribute better than they did. Drevno turned that mess into "meh". Now if he fails with these new kids? His guys? No excuse.

Lol people have loved his playcalling until the Iowa game. The train was awesome. Jabrill was awesome. Panda was awesome. Doooooooooom was awesome. The RPS+ stuff like the double fake screens and hit Butt up the seam was awesome. The progression of Rudock and Speight were awesome. The usage of Chris Evans was awesome. Then Iowa, OSU and FSU happened and now he's terrible. Don't get me wrong, I wasn't a fan either...I was just as pissed. But I can't forget the other stuff either. I have to put the all of the info together THEN form my opinion. That's just me.
