2013 OL Class - Yikes.

The odds of every single player being a non-contributor (note: I'm being euphemistic) was 1/64 or 1.5625%. But it happened. Ouch.

This isn't to rail on Hoke or Darrell Funk. But this is as clear a reason as any why our OL has limited depth and struggles against elite DLs (see FSU game).

And iirc, this was the #1 OL class in 2013. Many of us were excited because we thought/hoped it would develop into an elite OL down the road. This demonstrates the unpredictability in projecting OL success.

Me in 2013: Nothing can stop us, unless of course all of our 6 OL recruits don't pan out. 2 of them, that's possible. 3, there's an outside chance. But 6? I'd like to see that!

Kugler may start next year at OG.

Things may have been different for him and Dawson if they didn't receive two years of hot garbage coaching, eroding their talent/potential.

I wrote earlier that in the Hawaii game where he and Bredeson split snaps, I thought Kugler was the better player.  (A quick Google search for the UFR shows me I wasn't the only one.)  This isn't a knock on the coaching staff though; they see the kids a whole lot more than we do.

But as much as poor coaching may have been an issue, Kugler has had at least one shoulder surgery and rumored to have had other health issues, so for Kugler at least, it's not all on Funk.

If he's not going to have a chance to start next year, he might as well head to UTEP and play for his father.  I don't want to see that; if Cole's staying at C, I'd like to see Bredeson at T, Kugler and Onwenu at G, and then whomever wins the other T spot.

next year is time to rebuild the OL for a title run in 2018-19. Would like to see the following line-up to start the 2017 season: LT Cole LG Bredesen C Ruiz RG Onwenu RT Filiaga I don't think Cole is a natural center, just not thick enough to handle NTs in the B1G or the NFL. Cole has great feet, pass pro technique is his strength and he can also move well to the LB level ... LT is his natural position in my opinion. Would also like to see new recruits get time - in particular, Stueber in my opinion has the size at full maturity and technique upside to be the next Jake Long. This kid will be 6-7+ and 340lbs at full maturity ... very athletic, plays center for his varsity hoops team and is a dominating force on the court.

Serious question: Does Michigan football have the worst luck? Injuries, bad coaching hires, missed calls, fluke plays (msu), having the #1 OL recruiting class in 2013 only to have not a single fucking one pan out up to this point, etc. Yes all this had led to us getting Harbaugh, but it's still crazy to think about all the bullshit that has happened the past 10-15 years.

I certainly wouldn't call our injury luck bad. Other teams have had it way worse. The shitty coaching hires were not bad luck. They were bad decisions that resulted from a number of poisonous cultural issues. Go read some John. U. Bacon if you want more insight on that. The ref bias is hard for me to judge. We sure do seem to think that we have it bad with the refs but most of the rest of the country just calls us bitches for complaining about the refs. It is hard for me to decide what is bad reffing and what is us just bitching about losing. And I feel like we don't have any worse fluke plays than most.

Google UM OSU 2016. Fixed?

Not all of the penalties shown are totally obvious.

Mikey Weber blasting Watson after the play was over right in front of the ref was one of the most egregious no calls I have ever seen!

Darboh thrown to the ground by DB before the pass gets there. How do you miss that!

The only answer to this is to allow a "replay for penalty review"

That class and the one with Kalis Magnuson et al back to back was supposed to be our manball NC creating 15/16 offenses.  Outside of the total misses just a lot of meh players when we "hit" as well.  Just by probability with all these 4 stars and "the most college ready guard in HS" in Kalis and "the most college ready center - look at the genetics!" center it really was awe inspiring the misses.  Really wish we had retained OL coach rather than Hoke bringing his guy... instead Indiana prospered; they have some 2-3 star guys who turned into all conference.

Amen. Who knows—if Brady had been wise enough to retain Greg Frey—by far RR's best assistant—he might still be coach here. It certainly seems as though Frey can "coach 'em up."

And if, God forbid, Drevno suddenly left, I would certainly contact Frey to gauge his interest in returning. Even though he was assistant HC under Wilson, he wasn't tabbed to be his replacement after Wilson got shitcanned.

I had the same thought about Frey.  The linemen RR recruited were small in number, size and star rating, though Frey seemed to do a great job coaching them up.  David Molk is a prime example.  Yes, the blocking scheme was different in RR's system but a good coach is a good coach, IMO.  I pretend to know nothing about OL coaching but maybe Frey would be a good hire.

I know it's been brought up before, but is there any chance that Wheatley Jr slides to tackle? Seeing him on the field in the OB - quite the imposing figure. Haven't seen much of him at tight end yet, but it sure seems he has the optimal physical composition at LT.

on the 2017 OL, as a rebuild for the future seems ivery much needed. Who is best suited at each position and needs, etc.

2013 was also the year Derrick Green was the best RB prospect in the country. It's ok, we got Lewis, Taco, Hurst, Butt, Gedeon, Deveon, Hill, and so on.

How did our rivals to the south fare in 2013?

Gareon Conley (one-time UM commit)

Ezekial Elliott

Joey Bosa

JT Barrett

Eli Apple

Vonn Bell

Darron Lee

Jalin Marshall

I am not sure how much of that is talent and how much is coaching but that is a lot of hits and the misses moved on. The cream will rise no matter what, however you still want to start with the best milk.

Did it ever come out as to exactly what happened with Bosch? If I remember correctly, he left for the year, then came back and met with Harbaugh and then immediately transferred? So why did he leave again? And did Harbaugh basically tell him that he couldn't play here as a result?

Like grammar Nazism, except more annoying: You can take the probability of a given player washing out as a Bernoulli random variable, but there's no good reason to default to p(washout) = 0.5. Also, the probabilities for the six individual players washing out were never going to be independent, for a bunch of obvious reasons. Therefore, 1/64 isn't that great a guess for the true probability of all six linemen washing out.

Similarities to 2005 OL class

Marques Slocum - 4* (#1 ranked OG)
Cory Zirbel - 4* OT
Justin Schifano - 4* OT
David Moosman - 4* OG
Tim McAvoy - 3* OT
Mark Ortmann - 3* OT

I don't recall Slocum, Schifano, or Zirbel ever playing a down (at least a meaningful one) during their time on the team.
