That's not true.
We lost Tom Strobel and Keith Heitzman to Ohio U. and both played some at Michigan and were headed for a bigger role.
Gehrig Dieter was all everything at BGSU and left for Bama to be the 4th passing option.
There are example of guys just wanting more PT. You're not likely going to lose a starter, but to say if someone is good he won't leave isn't true. Russell Wilson is the most obvious answer.
Malik Zaire is transferring from ND and he'd likely start next year with Kizer headed to the NFL.

Didn't Heitzman complain that he wasn't invited back, that he had to go through a tryout? In contrast Countess was asked back but chose to transfer.

Perhaps. But anytime you're relying on walkons to fill out your lines, that's a bad, bad situation. Like relying on the lottery to pay your mortgage.
January 1st, 2017 at 5:34 PM ^
Those areas concern me, too.
I realize Hamilton's flip to Stanford last year may have been unexpected, but I was still a little surprised that they only had four (pre-decommit) OL in the class. Why not load up that year instead of this year? It could be that they weren't satisfied with what was available to them and decided to go all out in '17.
As for the interior D line, I think it would be reasonable to put Gary there (DT). Still, given that they got nothing in '15 (which was understandable), why not recruit it harder for '16?
January 1st, 2017 at 5:42 PM ^
The DL doesn't concern me as much, becasue what you don't see on that image is a bunch of DE types listed in the next section down that they've recruited the last two years. So slide some of those guys inside, and you're probably OK.
But the OL? That's really bad. And like you said, it makes some of the decisions made recruiting last year real questionable. Even if you have to take a guy lower on your board, you do it because you flat out need bodies there more than anything.
January 1st, 2017 at 6:18 PM ^
That requires those DEs to be competent enough to take on tackles from OSU, Wisconsin, etc.
If Gary moves inside, Mone/Dwumfour at NT with Hurst and Gary playing more of the 3? That could very well be a pretty good rotation in the interior of the DL.
Then at DE you're hoping for two of Winovich, Kemp, Vilain, Johnson, Hudson, Jeter, Jones, and Marshall.
Could happen, but I like Gary better on the outside.
As for the OL, I don't think I'd go so far as to say they''re "really bad." But there are definite question marks.
January 1st, 2017 at 6:44 PM ^
Also, I didn't say the OL was going to be really bad, I said the situation, specifically the depth there, is really bad.
Like say Cole or Onwneu gets banged up and has to miss a few games. They're fucked.

He gave 4 years to Michigan and Michigan Football, he bleeds blue, got his diploma and by all accounts was a class act. He hasn't signed to play anywhere else. He's one of our own and he'll always be one of us.
Don't tell me he's not one of us and then get mad when someone doesn't say "Michigan" on Monday Night Football. David Dawson is 100% Michigan Wolverines.
January 1st, 2017 at 9:40 PM ^
My comment was more snark than anything. I think you know that. Since it was a reply to your comment I suppose I'm not surprised you jumped up on your soap box. Obviously he will always be a Michigan man.

I had such high hopes for Dawson when he was being recruited. It's a shame he never developed into a starter. Good luck to him wherever he ends up.
January 1st, 2017 at 5:03 PM ^
And this is why I quit following recruiting several years ago. I remember this kid as a "OMG, MUST GET OR WE ALL DIE!!!!" recruit a few years back.

No one recruit matters all that much, despite what Rivals/Scout/247 etc would have us believe. There's a lot of really good football players and some of them don't pan out anyway.
January 1st, 2017 at 5:03 PM ^
if he was gonna play he wouldn't be leaving, best of luck to him.
We knew there had to be some attrition to get to that 31 or 32 recruiting number.

Damn, guys..You sound like a bunch of douchebags...Good luck Mr Dawson, always a Wolverine

Most of us are wishing him good fortune, so douche bags seems a bit strong there buddy.

I think most of us on here have good hearts and care about these guys during and after their M careers.

And he's leaving, on good terms...why are people being rude or making fun of him? Or even pointing out how big/little of an impact he made?
He's gone, just wish him well and move on.
I've seen a lot of these threads. Never have I seen one like this, this is unusual. Did Dawson do something that I missed?

Onwenu had extreme hype before and after he arrived. I'm really hoping he turns into a starter.
January 1st, 2017 at 7:05 PM ^
He will be a starter.
January 1st, 2017 at 5:46 PM ^
Chris Balas has been saying it quite often in his shows lately. I agree that Wheatley Jr. could be a damn good tackle. Could move and handle the good defenesive ends in the conference. He's already like 280 lbs.
January 1st, 2017 at 5:31 PM ^
But who? Its not like there is a ton of depth on either line.
