Follow-Up Article Regarding Jim Delany/Big Ten Officiating From Detroit Sports Nation

Submitted by cjpops on

There was a forum post here yesterday about my recent editorial for Detroit Sports Nation regarding Jim Delany owing an apology to college football. Here is the follow-up article if anyone is interested.

More information has come to light about the crew for the game this past Saturday. One of the officials is from Grand Rapids, Michigan. Furthermore, I take a look at one possible solution to the problem regarding compensation for officials.

Thanks for reading.

He could be a Michigan State fan right? Ohio has on major sports team.

Furthermore the distance from Ann Arbor to Columbus is 186 miles. The distance from Ann Arbor to Grand Rapids is 132 miles.

From my understanding, one referee is admittedly a huge Buckeye fan. I'll give the benefit of the doubt to the other guy however you don't often see pictures like these of referees at games.

We took the kids to the Lake Michigan coast in August and stopped in the Cracker Barrel in Stevensville at one point because my wife likes to torture me and my low-sodium diet sometimes, but I was initially shocked by the amount ND gear - all of it looking oddly bootleg - for sale in there until it struck me that I was not all that far from South Bend there.

I don't usually see smiles when a team scores a touchdown or all the other things Sam Webb mentioned in the link on my signature.

To paraphrase Sam, you can say no one is perfect with one or two of the issues. When you put everything together it stinks like shit.

Answer one question hanzo, and if you answer it truthfully and accurately your opinion will be considered as something more than scrapings from the bottom of a shoe:

How many times was osu called for holding (offense or defense), PI, offsides, false start, coaches being outside their designated area (which seemed important to those refs when M coaches did it)?

You well know the answer is zero, and if you honestly say you believe the buckeyes played that clean a game, despite the evidence to the contrary I'm sure you've seen by now (since you clearly visit this blog, at least to comment) - then your opinions will be scraped from our Maize & Blue shoes and deposited in the gutter where they belong.

Now you could admit those things did occur, but that in your opinion the buckeyes would've won even in a cleanly officiated game. There we will have to disagree, but that's what the half of sports that isn't playing the game is, right? Arguing about it!

Thnaks for stopping by, it's been swell...

And OSU misses Two field goals, turns it over on downs inside the 30, and Barrett gets sacked 8 times. OSU needed the refs to get back in the game. The drives that didn't result in turnovers or points were mostly killed by the Refs not making calls on third downs. Sorry goes both ways dude. OSU was gifted that win more than just by stupid turnovers.

We were outplaying OSU with our one-armed QB. OSU turned the ball over more times, (missed FG is a turnover).  The reason our offense didn't score more points is partly because of yes, mistakes we made, but more so because of refs finding ways to kill drives.   First and goal was literally stolen at least twice. Face mask, late hits, PI....oh, and we didn't gain enough yards?   It would have been a big gain if you didn't hold Jake Butt or tackle Amara Darboh.

It's very convenient to set up this narrative where you can't complain about the refs - Time to get rid of this line of thinking.  Any time you get in a situation where authority is above criticism, what is the result?  Corruption.

Refs should be able to stand by (unphotoshopped) film of their calls and explain them to the world. Why did you call THIS PI... but not THAT?  How do you explain THIS spot? Pay them a fair salary if that's what it takes to foster accountability.

So tired of hearing "Well there isn't enough of a talent pool"  "Humans aren't perfect"  No one is expecting perfection, just an absence of corruption.  As for the talent pool, what a cop out.

If you really want to follow up, look at the comments Wiercinski liked on his public facebook photo (not the cover photo). He likes comments calling Harbaugh an ass and implying that he can't read PRIOR to being allowed to officiate the UM-OSU game.

Prior to the Michigan game OSU averaged 51 penalty yards in regulation in 2016. Against Michigan they had 1 penalty yard in regulation. Well over 2 standard deviations from the mean. The game was a huge outlier in terms of penalty yardage.

You never actually say what the per diem is for a Big Ten ref, so it's pretty random that you speculate that it should be more. It's probably $50-100, which is perfectly acceptable to me.
