I for one am glad of this latest development.  Kudos to you good sir for finding this treasure.

1 year 29 weeks ago Ref your 85 points stat

Last three years O$U didn't care we were wounded or re-building, they called it a victory all the same.  To hell with that idea.  They have some of the best recruits money can buy and we still beat them.  We have the same team as last year and this year we outcoached them and outmanned them.  They are sore losers (see the classless bucknuts thread on the 'Board) let's not lend them any credit they don't deserve.

FOOOOOTTBAWWWWWW!!

2 years 22 weeks ago From Wikepedia

Why aren't people more open about his coaching past.  He has lineage to the Harbaugh family AND coached under Carr:

At Western Michigan, Hoke coached under head coach Jack Harbaugh. Also on the coaching staff were current Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh and current Ravens defensive coordinator Greg Mattison. Mattison would later serve at Michigan in the mid 1990s as defensive line coach and defensive coordinator, and in 1995 was instrumental in hiring Hoke. When he left Michigan, Hoke was replaced as defensive line coach by Bill Sheridan.

I've always liked the Hokester and I think it is a great hire.  Besides, it only takes the first three games (wins) for him to get to .500 - then no one can complain he is a sub-500 coach.

2 years 22 weeks ago Everyone needs to relax...

Good gosh, how quickly the tide turns on this board. So what. So we missed out on a coach that may or may not have even been offered a job. So we missed out on a guy with questionable clock management skills and that sorely lacks scruples in player relations. We don't know anything that is going on with this search.

For all of you RR lovers, I'm surprised you're not taking his advice and "getting a life." There is more to U of M than Brandon flying around the country trying to gauge interests and ask people for their insights. There is also more to this world than to call for an AD's job after a coaching search that, by all indications, he is taking his time with. OMG, we miss out on a 4 star recruit from BFE - BIG DEAL. I am sure there is more to the story than we all can speculate. Brandon knows what he is doing, relax.

As for the search, let's see what we have learned:

1) Harbaugh dreamed of going to the NFL, and earned his right to choose to pursue his dream

2) Les Miles was considered by all to have a spot at the table if Harbaugh pursued his dreams, but, if you paid any attention to Les you heard him promise his players and school that he would be back next season - looking back, that wasn't coach speak. Maybe he does honor his word.

3) Brady Hoke has professed his undying love for U of M and that he would take this job in a moment's notice. Don't we want someone who WANTS to be here, who can put together an amazing staff of coordinators, and win us 9-13 games per year? Sounds pretty good to me. Lloyd lite all you want, but, I won't complain. My hat has always been in the Hoke basket.

IMO, we all just need to let the rest of the process unfold. Who knows. Maybe Brandon left last night because he knew that Les was committed to LSU, so, he just pinged him about Hoke and other topics. The 4pm meeting was also called before Les and Brandon met. Maybe Brandon already knew something? Let's just enjoy being M fans/almuni.

Now, do as I do and:

2 years 22 weeks ago Way to Go Buzz Killington
2 years 22 weeks ago I'll second that

I heard from someone high up in the food chain that Les to M is done and tomorrow is a formality.  Take it what it's worth, but, worth seconding this post.

RABACK IT!!

2 years 23 weeks ago Since Posting New Forums

Since posting new forums is still fickle, consider this thread hijacked with some fresh news:

The Denver Broncos, who reportedly were trying to interview Harbaugh earlier this week, have moved on. John Elway, the Broncos' new football czar, said on his weekly radio show on 87.7 The Ticket in Denver on Friday that he believes Harbaugh wants to stay at Stanford rather than turn pro. Elway also said he believes Harbaugh's alma mater, Michigan, might also be back in the picture.

2 years 23 weeks ago Nope

Rodriguez's record in those seven years at U-M and WVU is 43-43. In 10 years at two major-conference schools, Rodriguez has won seven games against teams that finished the year ranked in the top 25 -- and only one against a team that finished in the top 10. (Those numbers jump to eight and two if you give Rodriguez credit for West Virginia's victory in the 2008 Fiesta Bowl after he left for Michigan.)

2 years 23 weeks ago If You're going to do this then why

If you're going to this argument, then how can anyone be so high on Rich Rod?  He is a 43-43 career coach that, save three seasons AFTER MIAMI (YTM), BC, AND VTech left the BigEast, didn't and does not have much of a track record of success.

Rodriguez's record in those seven years at U-M and WVU is 43-43. Bottom line is that you cannot look at a candidate and say well, inferior competition, rabble rabble rabble...

If Hoke is the higher, I think it would be good for the University.  If Miles is the hire, I think it would be good for the University.  If Coker is the hire, I think it would be good for the University.  You following me?

2 years 23 weeks ago UPDATE ON THE RUMOR

The Ticket just reported that they talked to their sources at M and they make nothing of what is being reported, but, obviously, cannot dismiss it either.  Some are thinking it is a tactic to get more public support and $ in negotiations.

Relax people, this big lead rumor is all pure conjecture.

(sorry to hijack the thread, I don't have enough MGOBLING to post my own topic!)

2 years 28 weeks ago PURE SPECULATION

OMG WHAT IF Thought:

Harbaugh is coming in town for the 85' team reunion.  What if him and Brandon are meeting "in private" at that time.  It's the perfect come in under cloak and darkness smokescreen scenario.  It gives justification for Harbaugh to be here and it would provide a face to face discussion with the pimp hand himself.

This is how these OMG Rumors have made me feel as of late, though:

(yes, I also posted this on Brian's main page post in the comments section.  Can't a man love playing with his otter?!  Frankly, this makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside, thank you very much)

2 years 28 weeks ago That's All...

2 years 29 weeks ago Reading Between the Lines

It is clear that he will give Beilein the support Beilein needs, regardless of Ws and Ls.  It is also clear that he is not quite convinced of RR's future...he isn't a dumb man and does not want to get painted into a corner.  Beilein he trusts will do the right thing.  I don't know that RR has won over Brandon yet and we may not ever know.  It provides nice fodder but let's not discuss RR's status until after the OSU game.  Remember patience is a virtue.

(Reading between the lines, though, I don't know that it looks good for RR if we get manhandled by OSU based upon what positive things Brandon said about Beilein and not RR).

2 years 31 weeks ago ATL, I disagree

If we follow a lot of football, we know that doing more with less is always better.  Kent State hasn't exactly been lighting up the recruiting trail, yet, with the 1-2 star guys he has, he gets results.  From His Bio at Kent State's Website:

In 2007, KSU was second in the MAC in rushing defense (157.3), third in total defense (385.6), first in tackles for loss (7.25 — 19th nationally) and fourth in sacks (1.92).

In 2006, the Golden Flashes ranked second in the MAC and 25th in the country in total defense (297.9 ypg), while leading the conference in yards allowed per play (4.6, 16th in the nation), pass defense efficiency (99.9, 4th in the nation) and tackles for losses per game (8.0, 4th in the nation).

In 2005 Rekstis led a team that finished third in the MAC and 24th in the nation in pass defense, allowing just 190.5 yards per game while having only 15 touchdowns scored against them.

Rekstis led a dramatic and record-setting turnaround in his first season in charge of the Kent State defense. He oversaw a unit that had ranked 12th of 14 teams in total defense in the Mid-American Conference in 2003, then finished first in the league and 15th nationally in total defense in 2004. The team also set a school record for quarterback sacks in a season with 34.

The Golden Flashes led the MAC in rushing defense that season, allowing just 2.9 yards per carry. Included in that total was a dominating performance at Buffalo when they held the Bulls to a record-low four net rushing yards. The Flashes also finished second in the league in pass defense and intercepted 15 passes.

I don't think competence necessarily means a big name from a big program.  With him having some Tressel experience I bet he could do a lot more than many would give him credit for.  Just look above at his results this year.

2 years 31 weeks ago Don't Laugh, BUT:

PETE REKSTIS’ COACHING EXPERIENCE

Seasons School Position(s)

2004-present Kent State Defensive Coordinator

2001-03 Youngstown State Defensive Coordinator

1999-00 Youngstown State Assistant Coach

1994-96 U.S. Coast Guard Academy Defensive Coordinator

1991-92 Eastern Michigan Graduate Assistant

PLAYING CAREER

1987-90 Youngstown State Defensive Back

Those who have no clue who this gentleman is, look no further than you kent state golden flashes!

Currently has his defense 9th in the NCAA in overall defense, has semi-pseudo history with Tressel, and can flat out coach a defense.

This is telling:

In 9 games, against 638 plays, he has his players only yielding 298.78 per game.  Stellar.  Plus, they have a 4-5 record...almost an anomoly.

2 years 32 weeks ago I Agree

MileHigh I agree. We needed this win and we got it. I was in the wait and see camp, I'll admit it, but after this week and listening to the announcers it is patently obvious. Our offense is there. There is no need to even question RR's status anymore. He WILL be our coach and Dave Brandon will pimp slap any negative nancies out there to oblivion.

My guess is we should start opining on who will take over for our embattled D-Coordinator.

Good Win Guys. I might even have sex with the Mrs. tonight...

EDIT: I'm in no way wishing any ill-will on our savior at QB.

2 years 33 weeks ago I'm in no way on any...

I'm not on any hire or fire platoon right now.  I think prudence dictactes being rational and waiting until the full season runs its course.  But, here are some examples:

2 years 33 weeks ago If this...

If this is what we have to deal with for the next seven weeks, Lord help us all...

2 years 37 weeks ago And While We're At It...

Why don't we just reserve every number for every position that has ever been played - that way everyone can have a number from a former player.  That would be a GREAT idea....

(neg away for my dissent if you desire)

2 years 37 weeks ago Speaking of which

Did anyone else notice that it was Dantonio that volunteered the name of the play during the on-the field, post-game interview? The sideline reporter didn't even come close to asking anything about it but he made sure to get it in there

A very savvy, political move for publicity (not to mention douchey) (at the 1:30 mark)...

This nugget shows exactly what an RR coached player is all about:

"He [Denard] just needs to show up for work every day and be who you are. That's what he's doing now." ~ Pat White

As RR has said many times, he didn't forget how to coach once he got to MI.
