Harbaugh media tidbits 8/15: Ahmir Mitchell & Shelton Johnson suspended
Harbaugh "Rashan Gary is a REALLY good player"
— angelique (@chengelis) August 15, 2016
Harbaugh says team is playing better at quarterback now than at this point last year.
— Jake Lourim (@jakelourim) August 15, 2016
Harbaugh says Mike Onwenu is 'one of my favorites.' Chris Evans might be the most impressive frosh right now he says.
— Nick Baumgardner (@nickbaumgardner) August 15, 2016
Ben Bredeson has played guard and tackle, Onwenu is playing both ways.
— Nick Baumgardner (@nickbaumgardner) August 15, 2016
OK, so Harbaugh says two players out of Ahmir Mitchell, Shelton Johnson and Kareem Walker are suspended. But he won't say which two.
— Jake Lourim (@jakelourim) August 15, 2016
Kareem Walker is practicing, so it's Ahmir Mitchell and Shelton Johnson that are suspended.
Asked how long they'll be suspended, Harbaugh again declines to answer, then says "Good?" and walks out.
— Jake Lourim (@jakelourim) August 15, 2016
Harbaugh really gushed about Mike Onwenu. Says he can play both sides of the ball (and he has been).
— Josh Henschke (@JoshHenschke) August 15, 2016
Michigan spokesman says Shelton Johnson and Ahmir Mitchell are the suspended players Harbaugh referenced.
— Adam Schnepp (@aeschnepp) August 15, 2016
Harbaugh said he'd handle the matter internally.

Harbaugh doesn't seem like the type to say the QB situation is better than last year if it isn't. Hopefully this calms a few of us down.
If Chris Evans is the most impressive freshman, that says a LOT about him. This is a really good class, and we've heard good things already about several of these guys.
I kind of wondered if Bredeson wouldn't at least get some run at tackle, given our lack of depth and this staff's preference for versatile players. Hopefully, things don't get so desperate that we need him there this season. But just in case, it's good to know he won't be diving in blindly.

Definitely a good point, and worth keeping in mind.
But then, Rudock is a guy that had starting experience in the Big 10 coming in, and also someone that turned out to really finish the season hot.
Obviously projecting these guys isn't as easy as "They're ahead of Rudock at this point, so they'll finish ahead of him too!" I wish it worked that way. But I do think it's cause for some small amount of optimism.
August 16th, 2016 at 1:01 PM ^
I take it as they are less likely to have a game like Rudock did against Utah. They will be more polished out of the gate.

Not only that, but this time last year the coaching staff was all new as well ...and week one was on the road against a Top 20 program with a brand new QB.
I think it's safe to say -- based on remarks from Harbaugh -- that Shane Morris could start and beat Hawaii and that regardless of starter, the team won't be 0-1 after the first game.

I actually think Bredeson supplants one Kalis or Mags before mid season. Both are 5th year players who haven't progressed much and it's unlikely the light goes on at this point.

I'll eat my hat if that happens.

a 5th year player this year. Mags and Kalis are both very good and have a ton of experience. If Bredeson is good enough to replace either of these players, then he would probably be the best OL we have ever had and would start from day 1. Let's just RS him and let him get ready to play next year.
August 16th, 2016 at 6:51 PM ^
Bredeson won't redshirt.
1. He needs to start next year. He (and, therefore, the OL) will be a lot better if he has some experience.
2. Drevno isn't afraid to play freshmen on the OL. At USC he started 3 of them one year.
3. Eligibility for a 5th year is worthless if a player decides to go pro after 3 or 4 years.
4. Experienced depth on the OL will probably be a minor concern in 2020 after Harbaugh has recruited full classes in 2017 - 2019. Wilson, Slaton and Ruiz will be redshirt juniors or seniors that year - if they haven't turned pro.
August 16th, 2016 at 11:25 AM ^
If he starts I think it will be at OT and Magnuson will move to OG and replace Kalis or Braden.

I was in the '02 CHS class with Carl; played football with him for a year at Huron. Solid dude. It was very fun watching him when he got on the field at Michigan.

Savoy still trails Curtis Perry on the depth chart so not likely.

who failed to live up to Fred Jackson's projections.
August 15th, 2016 at 7:28 PM ^
the Chris Evans hype is real, ey? This is good. Just wonder where he plays full-time. Could be RB according to his tweet (worth noting he's in there with the 1s, Kalis is injured hence Dawson)
August 15th, 2016 at 7:30 PM ^
Practice reports only mention him at RB, there has been no mention of him playing DB.
August 15th, 2016 at 7:48 PM ^
Looks to be mainly at RB right now, but the 2nd most likely spot that he will be found is in the slot, with DB being the third.
August 15th, 2016 at 7:54 PM ^
So far, according to practice reports and this tweet his reps are coming at SLOT/RB not any at DB. Will be interesting to see how that changes going forward.
Yes, and some running back. https://t.co/XmloTVmI9F

Slot is the 2nd position...and the position many thought he'd play first. I personally don't recall any real mention of him playing DB.
But for now he's been an ATH at RB.
He's basically playing what Peppers played last year on offense minus the wildcat stuff.
August 15th, 2016 at 7:34 PM ^
looks like a run to the left A gap or a hail mary.
August 15th, 2016 at 7:41 PM ^
The original picture he posted had the play call. I think he said it went for 17 yards.
August 15th, 2016 at 7:49 PM ^
then I hope we never line up in that formation on defense. Looks like some GERG shit to me.
August 15th, 2016 at 8:26 PM ^
It's it similar to the thing Florida ran?

assuming Cole can briefly aid Dawson then release means hes a lead blocker and someone as mobile as him ought to be able to get a piece of a blitzer and create an alley for Evans.
Braden may be able to release and get to the second level as well.
ps, my knowledge of Oline play is Funkian.

Off-Season in the Submarine: When practice video doesn't exist, we will over-analize a single pre-snap frame.

Johnson already redshirted. So basically he has to sit out another year? I guess a positive out of that is that his body does need the work, I think he was still listed at 212.
August 15th, 2016 at 7:50 PM ^
August 16th, 2016 at 3:53 AM ^
He wasn't going to get a meaninful snap this year with our DL.
Just depends on if he can practice with the team at some point.
Like the QB from Florida last year or the year before who was taking roids or whatever it was. He got a full year after the season had already started.
