OT- Favorite Music Genres
I know, I hate OT season as much as the next guy but to keep up with the spirit of the board today and with an hour until Northwestern gets their asses kicked (hopefully) I figured I'd add my two cents.
- What is your favorite genre of music and why?
- Specific bands?
- Hopefully better than Pop Evil and their horrendously lame song they did for UM?
- (Sorry for bringing that up)

Hell yeah. Seeing them in Detroit on Saturday

My 6th Who concert. The first one was in Chicago (1976 or '77?); since them I've also seen them twice at The Silverdome, again in Chicago, and finally in 2002 at Van Andel Arena in GR (the tour shortly after the death of John Entwistle, the greatest Bass player in Rock history). I still wish , though, that I could have seen them back in the 60's when Pete and Keith destroyed their equipment on stage.
LONG LIVE ROCK!
RIP Keith Moon and John Entwistle. Like all fans of The Who, sure wish Keith and John were still alive and touring with Pete and Roger.

That is a great channel along with MOR Network, the only thing is that they don't post as often as Majestic Casual.
Recently Majestic Casual came out with something called Majestic Color which is a series of free to use music.

I can go from listening to rap and then the next song will be heavy metal. I like pretty much everything outside of country-type stuff.
KSE when Howard Jones was still around was my favorite band. But he's not there anymore, so they're pretty much dead to me like Three Days Grace was once Adam left.
Bands are different than singular artists. You change vocalists and you're likely going to lose some people as it just won't be the same.
As for rap, Kanye is the best right now in the 2010s, but I make no secret about who my favorite rappist of all-time is.

Amaru is the greatest rapper of all time. Too bad you were not alive when he was doing his thing. The 90s were great for rap.

I have a wide range of music.
- AC/DC
- The Who

- Frank Zappa
- Stevie Ray Vaughan
- Jimi Hendrix
- B. B. King
- Buddy Guy
- Keb Mo
- John Lee Hooker
- Frank Sinatra
- Barry White
- Marvin Gaye
- Garth Brooks
- Shania Twain
- Carrie Underwood
- Keith Urban
I will stop right now

I like most of these, "GoBlueGoWings," but I disagree on Robert Randolph. Randolph is a great sideman/performer but not an elite songwriter. I have seen them a few times. The performance is great but I don't end up remembering the chorus of a single song when they are finished.
Playing pedal steel and sounding like Hendrix is great, but Hendrix wrote some of the most memorable and groundbreaking songs of his era. Randolph hasn't as of yet and I don't see it happening at this stage of his career. I hope I am wrong, though.

I work in music management, so I feel compelled to drop in here.
Favorite band is Animal Collective. If you haven't listened to their new album Painting With, definitely give it a try (not for everyone, but damn it's good).
Also check out Mutemath's new album Vitals, Houndmouth's Little Neon Limelight, and this up-and-coming R&B singer Alina Baraz's Urban Flora.

Forgot about Alina Baraz in my list. IMO, Urban Flora was one of the best albums of 2015.

Heh.
Other than the Floyd -- and all side solo projects (I'm a big fan of Waters' Amused To Death, for one), I really enjoy Rush, Iron Maiden, Queen, Steely Dan, Porcupine Tree (including Steven Wilson solo projects), Radiohead, Johnny Cash, Springsteen, The Clash, The Ramones, Midnight Oil, IQ, Dream Theater, Fish-era Marillion, Peter Gabriel, The Who, Yes, Neil Young, Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, Elbow, Wilco, The Black Keys, Sufjan Stevens, Sigur Ros, the Chili Peppers, Fleet Foxes, Miles Davis...I could go on and on.
I also have a slightly embarrassing affinity for 80s pop music and...Rihanna.
I'm not a huge rap/R&B fan, but I don't find it unlistenable. There's only one genre I cannot stand, and that is modern (pop) country. I dig the really old stuff...but the new stuff? That's the soundtrack to my personal hell.
My current earworm is Steven Wilson's Hand. Cannot. Erase. Which might be my favorite album released in at least the past 10 years.

I am into a wide range of stuff - I have a large collection of classical music, for starters, but if you looked at myself, you would find that a majority of the discs (and a majority of the downloads on my laptop) come from the progressive / electronic arena of music. Starting with some of the early groups - King Crimson, Electric Light Orchestra, Queen, Frank Zappa, The Yardbirds (which was a proto-prog group), moving through Kraftwerk, Genesis, Tangerine Dream, Supertramp, Jethro Tull, Yellow Magic Orchestra, etc... and all the way to some of the modern progressive acts along with a bit of progressive metal like Tool.
I also sport a very large collection of New Wave music, including a lot of obscure and out-of-print albums that I have Encore in Ann Arbor to thank for.

Other favorite bands/artists include: The Lumineers, Of Monsters and Men, Bon Iver, Sufjan Stevens , Fun, Coldplay (I like their newer stuff a lot better actually), The Crane Wives, Edward Sharp and the Magnetic Zeroes, Bluesky Greengrass

To elaborate I love all grunge (Nirvana, STP, Alice & Chains) and most post-grunge bands. On the metal side, I enjoy Of Mice & Men, Taking Back Sunday, Beartooth to name a few. But I'm not all rock. I love the Gorillaz and have had an on again off again love for Eminem, Tupac, and MGK.
