OT - David Bowie has died
I've never made a thread before but here goes. I just saw that David Bowie died from cancer. That was very unexpected, especially considering he just released a new album. I've never really listened to his solo music much, and so I will always remember him best for collaborating with Queen on 'Under Pressure'. May he rest in peace. Oh and fuck cancer too.

Panic in Detroit
Young Americans
Suffragette City
I remember when he married the model Iman. On SNL news they said "David Bowie married a man."

Couldn't agree more, loved his version, but if Nirvana never did that cover and my dad didn't comment that it was originally a Bowie tune, I never would have discovered David Bowie for myself, so for that I owe the existence of the cover a debt of gratitude.

Yes that is very unexpected. I was just reading artlcles online about his new album which included quotes from his producer....and it made no mention of his having cancer. They kept it very private.
Bowie is a legendary artist. This is big, sad news.

There are lots of famous rock musicians that are now in their 70's or quickly approaching that age. That so many of them lived to be "seniors" and are still alive is a statement of just how tough the human body can be.....cancer being one major, piece of shit, exception.
RIP David Bowie.

He was awesome. Hail to Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars!
Oh, and for those who might have forgotten(1):
You remind me of the Babe.
What Babe?
The Babe with the Power.
What Power?
The Power of Hoodoo.
Hoodoo?
You do.
Do what?
Remind me of the Babe ...
1. David Bowie played The Goblin King in The Labyrinth.

A great musician, but just due to the circumstances of my childhood, he will always be remembered first and foremost as Jareth the Goblin King.

Just heard the news here. He was avery rare artist that had a profound impact on music for 30-40 years. His style touched many genre's and art forms and was in many ways the face of 80's pop, new wave, glam rock, etc.
He has my respect

his work so many times, became a very diverse performer. Will go down as one of the greats. Was also a really strange dude, but he will be missed.

Saw him at Olympia during the Ziggy Stardust tour. Just recently started listening to his old old stuff on Spotify and used Soul Love for a scene.
"Soul Love"
Stone love - she kneels before the grave
A brave son - who gave his life
to save the slogans
That hovers between the headstone and her eyes
For they penetrate her grieving
New love - a boy and girl are talking
New words - that only they can share in
New words - a love so strong it tears their hearts
To sleep - through the fleeting hours of morning
[CHORUS]
Love is careless in its choosing
Sweeping over cross a baby
Love descends on those defenceless
Idiot love will spark the fusion
Inspirations have I none
Just to touch the flaming dove
All I have is my love of love
And love is not loving
Soul love - the priest that tastes the word and
Told of love - and how my God on high is
All love - though reaching up my loneliness
evolves
By the blindness that surrounds him

Sad day. He paved the way for so many and was never shy about being himself no matter what people said. A true legend.

This really sux waking up to this news. Lost a damn good one today. I had no clue he was fighting cancer. This is really sad. Jean Genie and Golden Years were my two favorite songs. He has left us with many good songs to remember him by.

His early stuff is the best. His later stuff is meh. But his video with Mick Jagger for "Dancing in the Streets" will live on forever as the worst video ever made.
RIP Ziggy.

I'm generally a music-first guy. I don't care much about an artist's image so long as the songs sound good. Bowie stands out as a big exception. He was unique without apology, in a way that really meant something to me when I first started digging into his music in my late teens.
He's gone, but his influence on rock n' roll lives on forever.

...listening to his avante garde approach to Rock music. I have him in my playlist and will listen to his tunes in homage today.
I'll never forget his rendition of "Little Drummer Boy" with Bing Crosby:

David Bowie collection on shuffle all day. RIP to a legend.

I was listening to a story about Bowie on NPR this morning. Apparently he sold personal bonds backed by his future airplay residuals/royalties. He was the first to attempt it and made a killing on it, as did his backers. Others tried this trick with limited success - the artist payments fell with the introduction of the streaming services.
Bowie was a brilliant businessman in addition to his obvious musical skills. RIP David Jones.

"And these children
that you spit on
as they try to change their worlds
are immune to your consultations.
They're quite aware
of what they're going through...”
RIP David.

Will have to listen to a "Binge of Bowie" today during my ride south from the snowy north. A foot of snow up here in Boyne Country...

Truly a huge loss to popular music, and completely out of left field for me to see. It makes this wonderful new song all the more strange, beautiful, and difficult to hear.
Look at me, I'm in Heaven,
I've got scars that cannot be seen.
