Explain Sparty hate to a puzzled outsider

Submitted by MonkeyMan on

First off- I come in peace

Second, I come in peace (in case you missed the first sentence)

OK

I have lived in Columbus Ohio all my life since 1959. I heard "Go Bucks!" more often than "Good Morning!" (BTW we did have mornings there). So I sort of became a UM fan out of rebellion. I "get" the OSU vs UM hate- both teams have been dominant a long time and knocked each other out of fun stuff a lot.

I do not have as good a sense for what goes on inside Michigan (the State). I sense, from reading these boards, that most of you guys may actually hate MSU more than OSU (I scientifically counted things like "Fuck Sparty!"). I understand CFB state rivalry, but not this one so much.

There are reasons this dislike should NOT be so intense:

1. UM has owned Sparty forever in terms of wins and losses- despite recent losses

2. I would assume there are many more UM fans in the State of Michigan than Sparty fans due to MSU's long track record of mediocrity- so you should outnumber Sparty fans quite a bit and feel like neighbors/coworkers are on your side

3. MSU has a high percentage of players who are from Michigan and that should give anybody from Michigan a sense of satisfaction when they achieve

So what is it? Is it the recent losses only? Was it this intense 15 years ago? Is it the coach? Would a nice guy coach end this dislike? Is it the fans? Are they really different than other fans? Does the fact that ANY team from Michigan is in the playoffs mean nothing?

I believe JH will have us back in the playoffs sooner than later and don't really think about MSU much. So, as an outsider to the state of Michigan, I am curious as to what has happened to make this hate so intense. I understand OSU vs. UM but don't understand why MSU angers so many more given the 3 items I outlined above. What am I missing as an outsider to the state?

thanks ( and I promise not to bring the subject up again)

I loathe Sparty for the fan base, namely my circle of Sparty friends.
And the program's exceedingly tired act of poor sportsmanship while playing the disrespect card.

To me it's 2 things

1) they act like this is the way it has always been. They give off no cognitive memory of losses past, but their subconscious still displays this in their angst and they are in complete denial

2). They actually think it has made their school academically better as well. Somehow they take the fact that since they have won some football games that they are now the dominant intelligent being in the state or even somewhere. That is the most annoying aspect.

To understand the issue, you need look no further then your own back yard. Like myself, you live among the buckeye faithful. You listen to them, year round, make comments. Joking and not so much. And UM/OSU are only rivals in football. Outside of the prism of football, we don't care, and they don't care. It's only football. UM/MSU are rivals in everything. I want Michigan to beat Sparty always. I don't care if it's woman's tiddly winks. Michigan needs to win. Their fan base is the most obnoxious bunch of blow hards I've ever dealt with. And it's across all sports. I can't stand them, and I wish nothing but misery upon them

Even though I'm a UM grad, I didn't grow up in Michigan, and havent lived there since graduating in 1989. One of my best friends is a Sparty grad, but we end up going to Michigan games together and he is a big Michigan fan.

Been following Michigan football closely since 1985. At first Sparty was an annoyance, and never lived up to its potential (think Tony Mandarich), and would occasionally upset us.

Then the tripping penalty of Desmond in 1990 when we were ranked #1 meant it was more than an annoyance. Add in Plaxico Burress' performance and I started taking them seriously, but still no absolute hatred. Then the bad timekeeper made things worse.

My hatred from them really, really started with Gholston twisting Denard's facemask when he was helpless on the ground.

So for me, it comes down to:

1) They are thugs; when their guys get in serious legal trouble, they suspend them at best for a game, and then reinstate them. Nice discipline, almost Lawrence Phillips nice.

2) Their coach is a serious douchebag. No explanation needed.

3) They have a chip on their shoulder, as everyone has said. A woman I know professionally (I was her boss) said that everyone at Michigan thinks they are so great.

Which brings me to #4:

4) We are better than them...academically. Sparty may have better looking girls, but the academics don't even compare. I can't stand Notre Dame fans, but I at least respect them. I respect and really like teams like Stanford or even Northwestern who actually take the "student" part of student athlete seriously. I may not love every competitor, but at least there is some respect for their student body who worked their way in to a school and are not there just to party or burn couches.

I may not love a school like Iowa that beats us and doesn't have as good academics. But it's hard not to like them because they are nice people, work hard, and don't brandish the inferiority complex, with a coach that plays by the rules. It's like Dantonio is the embodiment of all that was sour under Tressel, and he moved in next door to your house. And all of his kids turned out like him.

I can only imagine what it would be like to live next to that neighbor for 365 days/year. Glad I live in So Cal.

UM used to have really unattractive women. So much so that I had a girlfriend at another B1G school. My friends and I would all be in agreement about this, and we were in frats together, socializing with sorority girls, who tend to be the best looking girls on campus (sorry to generalize, but true).

I'm Facebook friends now with a kid who is a junior at UM and judging by his pics, the girls have definitely gotten a lot cuter. A lot. Again, verified by one of my contemporaries.

I'm assuming that the stereotype that Sparty girls are cuter because of lower academic standards has held up. Maybe the lead is not so much as before.

Personally, to me, nothing sexier that a hot, smart, funny girl.

There isn't a lot of scientific proof here, mind you, but subjective observation.

And it's all relative. I live in So Cal. Not a lot better than this.

Pretty simple.  Michigan dominated the rivalry for 40+ years.  But I think all through that domination Michigan and its fans for the most part have always been civil to MSU fans, at least as far as I know.  Perhaps MSU fans interpreted that civility as arrogance?  Then Mike Hart came up with the "little brother" thing in 2007, which I actually do not like, and it made Sparty nation go all psycho bitch.

Since 'little brother' 2007, MSU has been relevant and beating Michigan frequently.  Now most of their fans, and also their coach, will take every opportunity they can get to rub our faces in it.  They do not act like they've been there before and I doubt they ever will.  I would respect them if they treated Michigan with the same type of civility that we treated them with when we were winning.  Dantonio fuels this behavior which is why I hate that fucker with a passion.

Pardon my French.

I don't hate any school or fan base, not even OSU and MSU.

But I speak only for myself. In any case, here's the root of Sparty's hate for Michigan: resentment.

Michigan is a much tougher school for applicants to get an acceptance letter from than MSU. Lots of MSU alums and students were outright rejected by Michigan, and lots didn't bother applying because they knew they'd be rejected.

Rejection seems to hurt their feelings. It plays into their disrespect mantra.

In any case, they seem to hate Michigan more than Michigan hates them, but lately it's getting reciprocated because Michigan hasn't been very successful against MSU in football. So Michigan fans are showing frustration.

Harbaugh will turn this around, and soon the so-called rivalry will return to its divinely-ordained, one-sided resentment. Sparty will care a lot. Wolverines fans will ignore them.

And all will be well with the world again.

I went to the 2011 game in East Lansing wearing a Michigan shirt and not talking or saying a single thing to anyone I didn't know.  Yet I was called homophobic names twice, once by a Sparty bro who got in my face over it - yes he just randomly walked up to me, got in my face and called me a "gay faggot."

In the game, there were several D-bags and one fan cheering for MSU to injure Denard on purpose.

This is typical.

I have a coworker whose dad was a head BigTen ref and said that Dantonio/Narduzzi were the biggest jersk/whiners and would tell the media that they weren't complaining about calls, but would call and complain constantly to the BigTen.  I could go into more detail on the D-baggery there.

As much as I hate OSU, they tend to know what success is and act like they've been there before.  When MSU has success, their program and fans just confirm why they should never have it.

most of my life.  I just don't like them

As a fan base their whole lives revolve around Michigan.  They are actually happier when Michigan loses than when their team wins.    When MSU does beat Michigan they practically pop out of their damn skin to try and rub it in your face, even if you've never said boo to them when Michigan beats them.

I am dreading what I will have to deal with at work tomorrow.  There used to be a big divide between the awfulness of OSU and MSU fans.  Now I would have to say I hate MSU fans the same if not more.  Like so many have mentioned, they are just totally obnoxious.  I have never once talked crap or instigated anything to my Sparty co-workers and yet they make a point to get in my face and talk smack.  Totally insufferable and therefore I will always root against MSU.

They're annoying. We beat them six years in a row and act like we've won games before. They finally start winning the recent games and they act like their team has been doing it since the 40s. They'll tell you to stop mentioning the past yet gloat about games as far back as 08. But Mich's six wins in a row thru 07 are "the past" that can't be mentioned. Plus they always stick up for Ohio state ONLY because they know you can't stand them. Oh ya forgot one, when mich basketball was dominating the recent years they claimed their basketball program is better because they've been better over the last 15+ years. When talking football our program isn't better because the last 15+ years are irrelevant. Just the current state.

gholt6633

December 6th, 2015 at 6:08 PM ^

Sparty certainly has a double standard, but this surprises no one.  However, saying Michigan basketball was dominating them in recent years is stretching things the same way they do. We certainly had some well earned success that revived the rivalry, but dominating is not accurate.

The worst thing about MSU fans is that they don't care enough about their own to know who their playing week to week. They don't show up to root for their own team and the only reason they like MSU is to hate on Michigan.

I grew up a huge UM fan (but not an MSU hater), and went to UM as an undergrad in the 80's.  I lost good friends from high school who went to MSU.  I'd go visit them for a weekend, and all they wanted to talk about is how terrible UM is, how arrogant UM is, what a terrible coah Bo Schembechler was, etc.  This would be without me bringing anything up, and I would try to say "whatever" and change the subject to fun college things, but it was really like an angry obsession.  After a few times I gave up on the friendship, haven't talked to them since.

Notice on social media how MSU fans seems to be as concerned with ripping on Michigan as cheering on MSU.  That is annoying even when UM is kicking their butts on a regular basis.  But when they are winning?  Unbearable.

OSU is our rival. Sparty is more of an annoyance, mostly because of the inferiority complex their alumni. The "rivalry" between the two schools is more like a pro sports rivalry, think Red Wings-Avalanche, in that it only matters when MSU is good and beating them has meaning.

I submit my hate for Sparty. I really hate their fans more than anything. Total idiots and revision art historians. I respect the ability of Izzo and D'antoni. But as humans, I despise hypocrites. In times of trial they are horrendous. In their victory they are insufferable. They are whiners and real winners are not. They are a short term narrative going forward, both. I am gleefully anticipating their retirement.

Their fans are the worst plight ever visited upon mankind. They just don't act quite right. Although I stay away from them as much as is humanly possible given that I live in the state for half a year, they reflect an air as if the current trend has been an ongoing reality for let's say a century. Nomally, a fan base of a program as historically successful as theirs suddenly presents themselves as behave in a manner of expectation and with a degree of, "Yes, that was totally expected." Theirs, however, take great pride in repeating the behavior of a Super Bowl winner on any given Saturday. It definitely stems from Mark and filters down. They have a superior attitude with built-in excuses in even of loss just to make sure everyone is aware if they do taste defeat it was certainly not due to the other team being better. Hell, even their media spokewoman, Jemelle Hill, came on air and pontificated about their greatness after this year's victory over UM. When her co-host asked if she was done, she replied, "Oh belive me, when it appeared we were going to lose, I was ready for that to and was going to point out all the reasons the refs cost us the game."  It's no normal behavior by any stretch. Difficult to define, but you would know if if you saw it.

despite everything you said about how much we have owned them...in their minds those years never happened or at least are A LOT shorter than they really were. They are beyond obnoxious about everything. If not on mobile I would rant MUCH more but luckily for all of you I am. I hate them so much more than osu it's not even funny.

Their coach is a total hypocrite too. WAHHHHHH, respekt us wahhhhhh...but then he slams M at every corner and his players taunting the student section after they fluked one of many of their wins this year is far worse than that tent stake incident.

I am one, maybe the only one, who is not a hater. I cheer for MSU as long as they r not playing Michigan. The do after all represent the same state!

nMkaczor

December 6th, 2015 at 4:28 PM ^

Three reasons:
1. There seems to be more Sparty fans in the state of Michigan because a) MSU is a much larger school with a 60%+ acceptance rate. b) Michigan alumni tend to leave the state for better jobs in Chicago, NYC, West coast, etc. while MSU grads tend to stay in the state since MSU doesn't carry the same brand value outside of Michigan. c) There are a TON of neutral fans in the state who simply root for whichever team is doing better at the time.
2. Because of #1, you have to deal with cocky MSU fans on a daily basis. Many of them are overly enthusiastic because this is the first time MSU has been good in their lifetimes.
3. MSU fans know that the school itself cannot hold a candle to Michigan's academics so they try to find every possible way that MSU is better and point that out whenever they can.

Cause the run Dantonio is on is better than anything we've done since you had to take trains to games and our fans (me included) can't deal with it. Our fan base makes excuses for losing with kids who were high rated while Sparty just wins with whoever they get. But to be fair our fan base thinks being a total homer makes them unbias and reasonable a lot of times so we do kind of live in a delusional world. If you don't believe me go over to stadium and main sometime and read the board full of crazy homers over there. All you have to do is spend a minute over there to realize how far removed from reality some in our fan base truly are.

gholt6633

Hard to disagree.  We're still talking shit about flukes, and have 7 page threads about Connor Cook not shaking someone's hand.  The best posts however, are the endless notes proclaiming Sparty's run is over beginning next year.  We need to watch Harbaugh build our program and embrace that a stronger B1G and a competitive MSU rivalry are both better for the program.

If they happen to win the NC, what you said will become a terrible sad reality. If they lose to Alabama or in the NC game, then the run they have been on is more comparable to what Bo did.

Lloyd Carr brought us 1997, which wa shigher than anything Bo ever did, but Bo had so many seasons that were way better than anything Lloyd Carr.

Lloyd Carr was quite disappointing outside of 1997 as we lways were a 3-4 loss team and never any Big Ten title without at least 3 losses.  Sucks but true and I cannot handle it.

The run Douchtonio is on better than anything we ever did under Carr outside of 1997 and I myself like you and other fans cannot handle it either. It is practivally making me want to bail on college athletics.

If MSU does win the NC, it would aitomaiclaly make Douchtonio better than Lloyd Mo and Bo as he would have that plus the run Bo went on, but No could not quite get the NC even thoough he got close so many times. Sad but true. Save us Alabama!! Roll Tide.
