Wow, no kidding. But sadly, this does sound like what a lot of poor managers/executives say to their employees: "Hey, you really aren't right for this task, but there is no one else here better suited, so we're giving it to you. Just try not to fuck it up too bad, OK?"

Why are so many Athletic Directors so awful at their jobs?

But it's completely insane. Illinois should have tons of money from the Big 10 network + TV deal to hire a coach and give him and Alabama-like support staff. It's in the Big 10 west, where IOWA is currently undefeated. You should be able to recruit St. Louis and Chicago.
Pac 12 schools with far less have gotten great results by opening up the checkbook and spending that TV money. What's the point of having more money for the conference, adding shite like Rutgers and Maryland, if all the other schools in conference are just going to pocket the money, shrug their shoulders and hire a coach that makes them go, "We'll he won't end our program"?

The kids seemed to respond to him pretty well and played their asses off when they could have said screw it. It's Illinois guys, Bill Cubit is a legit coach and I think the Illini did well here given their situation.

He's got that dreamy Zook stare down already. Seems a natural fit.

shit ton of CFB opening and not enough good coaching candidates. Illini is better off sticking with him one year then find a new coach the next year. Cubit has done a decent job all things considered.

This program would kill for a couple 6 wins seasons. It's such a dumpster fire.

If I was an Illinois fan I'd be happy knowing that my AD's best to worst scale includes "won't put a dagger in the heart of the program."

I hope they are just waiting for Tressel's show cause to be done next year

Wow. I often walk out of offices smiling when they tell me, "Well, you're not exactly who we wanted on this project, but at the same time we're pretty sure that you can't fuck it up too badly."
I am shocked he didn't add, "Don't worry, Bill. Illinois football practically runs itself, something your predecessor just didn't appreciate."

With an AD like that who needs friends?
