M Cooled on Tony Grimes

Submitted by GBOD79 on
Tom Beaver is reporting that M cooled on Grimes and that is why Tony would not talk with Allen Trieu earlier this month. According to Beaver, Michigan is feeling good with Cullen, Talbott, and Avery at CB in this class. Once Cullen committed Grimes fell down our list. Let the debate commence...

Agreed. Assume we add either Parker or Knight (but not both), and that's 7 DB recruits. 7 out of 26 is 27% of our class. 4 out of 22 starters is 18% of our starters. So taking 27% of our class to fill a position of need that amounts to 18% of our starters makes absolute sense. Anything more is overkill.

Well, those numbers only make sense if your redoing your roster every year. But I guess this does count as a unique situation (Like we had at QB), where we need to recruit 4 years of depth in one class. I just worry about balancing out the distribution of classes at each position.

I will defer to our coaching staff, but still think we could have used another solid corner. I know we have Turner coming up, but Donovan is gone, Boubacar is not likely coming back, Woolfolk is probably on his way back to Safety, and JT Floyd looked more like a nickel corner. I shall reserve final judgement though until Signing Day; perhaps they have another SNAKE OIL up their sleeve. Hopefully whomever they pull out of thin air is as solid as Roy Roundtree.

he would be...I'm not sure he still doesn't have the option. He still has the offer? Mich hasn't officially retracted it have they. I'm not sure how much sub text there is here, but it seems like RR is taking what is coming his way. Grimes would still be a good addition.

Unless he had some off the field issue which soured RR's tongue I doubt it. Secondary is a position of need, RR is still recruiting for it, Grimes has only played in his all-star game since he was considered a silent, just don't see anything that would all of a sudden make UM not want him. It sounded like he got a strong dose of negative recruiting and then started opening up to other schools.

Sure, our secondary is young but we also have a pipeline of them coming through. With CC, Talbot, Avery coming in right now and then already securing the commits of Greg Brown and Delonte Hollowell, we should have plenty of talent and competition at the CB position for a while.

I agree the defensive backfield was a position of need. However this class alone you have vinopal, avery, talbott, christian, jones (qb who will probably be a db), Marvin, and Carvin. We are in good to great shape with Parker and Knight. With this in mind I think the coaches can take who they think is best and not just anybody. It is very possible that Grimes fell down their list. Your scenario of negative recruiting is also quite plausible and I wouldnt doubt that that had some effect as well.

I guess I'm still a bit curious if there's more to it. I mean, wasn't it last month or earlier this month that TomVH talked to Tony and Tony mentioned how he hadn't heard from the U-M coaches before Tom told him it was a no contact period (which also made it sound like other schools may have still been contacting him)? I've wondered since then if that dead period (which he apparently didn't know about?) influenced Tony negatively, if that's why he felt the coaches were cooling on him because he hadn't heard from them even though they couldn't contact him. Not saying that the Michigan coaches didn't just come out and say, "Hey, we're full, sorry," but it's just odd between the TomVH interview and how quickly this one spiraled downhill with Murphy going to Maryland and Grimes now looking elsewhere. Probably looking too much into it...

Maybe they didn't want to spend a schollie on Clarence Murphy. That would probably have soured Grimes on UM, and UM would have picked up on it pretty quickly.

I think this is the most likely scenario. I think recruits may need to rethink this package deal situation. Unless the package is two 5 star guys. Murphy might have dragged Grimes down in this situation.

unless the kid comes out and says, "yea they cooled on me after so and so committed" there's almost no way for a recruiting mod to get that message across without it looking like sour grapes.

We take in quality DB commits so maybe Michigan cools on the "package deal" Murphy and Grimes were selling. Michigan cools on Murphy then Grimes cools on Michigan. I still think Grimes would be a great pickup. If you have the chance to pick up a top 10 CB you do it. However, with all the committed DB talent you don't have to take Murphy to get Grimes.

We need to grey shirt or give the Barnes treatment to Vinopal. This guy and his stumpy little legs will always be a career back-up at best. He looks like Fred Flintstone with that big torso and stubby little legs. Decent straigtline speed does not make a person an athlete. His 5'10" or 5'11" body with legs that belong to a person who is 5'6" will always limit what he can do athletically. We can do better. We have to make room for big time prospects and playmakers. Vinopal doesn't fit the bill. Stiff hips and stumpy legs limit athleticismm. That is why is his only offers are from Kent State and Bowling Green. I say bring in Knight, Parker and whoever else we have room for. And get rid of Vinopal.

and it appears that, during his years in medical school, Doctor Sherwin never learned what "greyshirt" really means. He throws the term around in every post he makes, indicating that he believes that UM can just greyshirt any recruit he feels might not be up to par. ...not to mention he has a really creepy fixation with the shape of Vinopal's legs.
