MSU Penalty on the snap?

Submitted by gustave ferbert on

http://longsnap.com/2010/08/28/nfl-and-ncaa-rules-regarding-snappers/ Could this have been legitimately called? The rules seem to have been implemented in 2010 and I haven't seen anything that was updated. It's the first I've ever heard of such a rule and I've never seen it called in a game.

Looking at the replay, it did look as if Sypnieski (spelling?) was bowled over on the snap.

situation? Whose head fell off on the targeting call? It seems pretty significant to me to throw a player out of the game. Or to extend a drive with the penalty on Henry or cancel out an interception.

I call bullshit.

What your saying is that if they had roughed the punter they shouldnt call that either. Both roughing the punter and roughing the snapper are player protection calls. Both calls are made in the interest of player safety. Both calls are major and egregious. Both calls need to be made regardless of clock or situation.

The refs simply blew it. They didnt swallow the whistle as you suggest.

attempt. Contact was not nearly as bad as in this game. The threat of and quick ccontact maybe while center still had ball obviously would impact the hike, which was loa and below the knees as Harbaugh said in a press conference. The ref standing behind the defense is looking right at the center should have called it.

That and the 12 holds that could have been called. Hollis and magic got their money's worth. It's over. Next year it won't be close enough for any shady sparty luck.

stop, but I won't agree that they made a great play. That win was gift wrapped for them. Whether it was a bad play for M or whatever; those sorry sons of bitches don't deserve the satisfaction. Now on to the jug.

So, we are not supposed to call out what else happened. Seems acknowledging the two are mutuallly exclusive. Did I miss his bid to petition the BIG... You just stop it. That game was stolen so fuck you.

Meh - they were recipients of a gift - same with Eddie Brown, clockgate and a first down on 4th & 10 when they managed at most 9 yds to keep the game-winning drive alive.

Go fuck yourself.

They were certainly consistent doing that last Saturday.

As I was leaving, a van was driving up Pauline Street and I heard shouting and and saw middle fingers thrust toward this van.

Inside were the officials. It was a sight to see. They had an escort, but I they also got bombarded - and rightfully so.

Let it go...It's moments like these that remind me of this quote:

"True loyalty is that quality of service that grows under adversity and expands in defeat. Any street urchin can shout applause in victory, but it takes character to stand fast in defeat. One is noise - the other, loyalty."

they should have been in that position, they were. I whole heartedly think that the refs screwed them into that position. Easier to let go if MSU actually won the game with skill and not ref calls. 2 scores because of refs, they can't overcome that.

I think Harbaugh's toughest adjustment coming back to college is the capricious and arbitrary officiating.  You can see him constantly wincing over how bad it is.  And he can't even say anything about it.

Somebody in a position of influence needs to speak out on his behalf before he gets frustrated and leaves.

Why the f*** can't the Big Ten find replay officials who know what they are doing? Why is this so hard? You are watching the game on REPLAY, and you get to look at it as many times as you want to. So how is it possible to still be so unbelievably bad? Where are they finding these idiots?

My last act of "what if" will be to read Brian's post today. Then I'm done. FFFF on Minnesota will be a welcome sight. It's Gopher season (not duck season or wabbit season).

Happens all the time but rarely called. Here's one instance where it was actually called last year, the ND long snapper talks about it happening all the time, he seems shocked they actually called it.

I've seen it called, but most frequently on field goal attempts.  It's less common on punts, I would guess, because teams don't come after the punt jailbreak style as frequently as they do field goal attempts.

It probably should have been called, but it doesn't matter at this point, and it's certainly not worth continuing to talk about.  Move on.  Beat the crap out of Minnesota.

I think we need more people in this thread to parrot the "we lost, move on" narrative.

But yes, that is a real penalty. In high school football, we were reminded of it constantly, and were even called for it once. What MSU did was worthy of it, but that's a penalty that is NEVER called. It's just salt in the wound at this point.

After rewatching the video several times, it's clear that the defender is trying to split the gap but is pushed into the snapper by the left guard. The end zone view shows this better than the sideline view.
