I really hope not. I'd rather beat them senseless this year.

I think it's much more likely Stanford is returning to normalcy than it is that Northwestern is top 20 calibur

I think we had a worse non-conference performance opening week last year, and then OSU won it all anyway after all the pundits said the Big 10 was finished before week two.
In any case, we don't have a juggernaut in Ann Arbor just yet, so until the time comes we do, I am happy to have a weak Big 10 to try to pick up a few wins against.

Based upon spending too many hours inside yesterday and today watching football, there are already some things that can be prognosticated with (less than?) reasoable certainty.
Penn State has major problems with its O-line and I question just how, based on Hackenberg performances yesterday and last year, he is a first round pick...maybe with time to throw, he could be great, but he seems inconsistent even when he has the time.
Alabama has a very good defense, and an excellent running game, although I wonder how they will do against better talent than Wisconsin when they need a passing game.
Wisconsin's running game will probably not equal what is was over the last couple of years, but few teams have Bama's D. Wiscy might win the B1G West, only to get trounced by a team from the East,
Northwestern will still be Northwestern once things get rolling. It looks like the last vestiges of the Harbaugh effect at Stanford are leaving the building.
MSU has some work to do, but I ain't saying nothing beyond that.
Much of the B1G has a lot of work to do.
As for Michigan.......Get well soon Drake, get well soon. I think we are going to be a team no one wants to play in the latter part of this season.
September 6th, 2015 at 9:11 PM ^
Ohio State won the national title and Michigan State finished 5th and the conference wasn't very good?
Maybe the rest of the conference sucked but you can't say the league wasn't good. Go with "top heavy" instead.
September 6th, 2015 at 11:18 PM ^
For example, Kentucky Basketball in SEC. They're clearly the best team in the country and SEC conference sucked overall.

It was a bad week, esp in light of all the "big 10 is back" talk all summer. It remains a top heavy league, esp until/when Neb, UM, or PSU return to any form of glory. We can rationalize all we want but there was 1 quality win (NW) in the entire league.

Did you forget about UCLA and USC? They are both ranked and I'd say they are 2 and 3 in the PAC12
September 6th, 2015 at 9:25 PM ^
Over the past 3-4 years I'd say Pac 12 and SEC are not. You lost USC in the Pac 12 but got Oregon Stanford UCLA - and your next tier now is pretty darn tough in Utah ASU and now Arizona. Those are not world beaters but they provide a good bite. SEC goes without saying.
Where the Big 10 lacks is not team #1, #2 but thaht next tier of teams #4 thru #7. That is due to PSU and UM and Iowa faltering and Neb to a degree.
ACC likewise is bad in that 2nd tier.
September 7th, 2015 at 10:58 AM ^
If you viewed Stanford as the second best Pac 12 team coming into this season, you're alone. I was very surprised they were in the preseason top 25. They were bad last year.

That's an insanely optimistic spin on things. Minny looked like a good team, but it's not really fair to say it was down to the wire. Wisconsin got dominated! I don't know how you're putting that on one guy being out. Nebraska lost to a team at home that had a couple huge injuries before the season and then lost Taysom Hill before the 1st half was over. Discounting turnovers like that, you could say Hoke was just unlucky and that he was secretly the best coach in the country.
The B1G just isn't that good. I also don't particularly care. Like others have mentioned, they talked a lot about schedule strength in the playoffs last year, but ultimately OSU got in despite losing against Va Tech and running the table in a weak B1G. The main thing was they beat MSU easily and demolished Wisconsin in the championship game, even though they had other close games. Wasn't their game against Indiana tight?
Also, I don't discount NW's win, but my God, I watched the replay later and David Shaw is a terrible playcaller. He's gotta be the most conservative coach in the country. Punting on 4th and 5 at the 38 I believe it was. Running some simple sweep on 3rd and 13. Time after time.

He should have had Hogan throw to Schultz for more than 6 yards in one reception.

I don't think BYU is a scrub team, but I just can't imagine they're going to be that good this year. We'll see how it plays out. Either way, I really don't think it's a game Nebraska should lose at home considering they've been probably the 4th-best team in the B1G over the last few years.
September 6th, 2015 at 7:48 PM ^
Of all the Losses, the Penn st loss looked the worst! When you are giving up 10 sacks in a game and one of those is against a two man rush, you have a serious problem. Their Oline looked worst then last year, and worst than ours in 2013

But just rechecked the next 2 weeks of college football...this year is stacking up SO much better than last.
Next week you get Michigan at noon. The 3:30 slate sucks, so I recommend getting out of the house and being back for the 6p, 8p, and 10ishp games.
Week 3 is porn. We play at noon again. The 3:30 slate is AMAZING, 6p is Georgia/S. Carolina, 7/8p is solid before giving way to Bama/Ole Miss at 9:15p. UCLA/BYU at 10:30 before the Cougars come out to A2.

I realize SEC teams play creampuffs mid season but just a brutal way to start a year for many. LSU begins with Miss State and Auburn in week 2 and 3? Yowsers.
GA Tech v ND will be very interesting.
September 6th, 2015 at 8:24 PM ^
I really doubt Miss State is a good team. They were certainly good, but overrated last year because of how their schedule played out, beating highly-ranked teams at the beginning who turned out to be meh. And they struggled for a long time against Southern Miss after losing a ton of players.
Weren't you the one discounting Mullen last year while Brian was talking him up as a possible hire? You should know this lol.
September 6th, 2015 at 8:43 PM ^
The place will be rocking and it's LSU's first game of the season.
LSU wins, IMO...but I don't think it'll be a cake walk.
Then Auburn a week later? Whew.
And yes, Alum said Mullen wasn't a fit for us and he wanted to see him do it more than just a year. But that doesn't mean the team isn't going to play tough versus LSU. Kind of 2 different arguments. Actually, they're very different. One is "is he a fit for Michigan" and the other is "can he beat LSU at home in 2015?"
September 6th, 2015 at 9:20 PM ^
Yep, I think Miss State will come in last in the SEC West but 2nd in the Big 10 west. So weakness is all relative. They still have their QB Prescott and its not a gimme game like say playing rutgers would be for LSU. Mullen had a pretty good D last year. Not sure how many players they brought back to that D this year, havent researched them.
I wanted nothing to do with Mullen because he was basically a 1 year wonder and even that year didnt look as great by late Nov as it did mid Oct. If I wanted Meyer protegees I'd have taken Whittingham.

Ehh reminds me of week 2 of last season. Still lots of football to be played to see exactly how good opponents were.
Mich lost to nd
Msu to oregon
Osu to vt
Purdue to cmu
Nw to northern Illinois
September 6th, 2015 at 8:49 PM ^
Those games were AWFUL compared to this year.
There wasn't more than 2 good matchups a week for the first 5 weeks of the season last year. It was AWFUL.
Alum96 and I bitched about it every single week, it was pathetic. The matchups were bad and the games were even worse.
The week we just had, week 2 and week 3 provide MUCH more compelling matchups than we had last season.
It wasn't until the SEC started beating up on each other that we had something last year.
This year, they start early and you still get nice matchups like GT/ND, Auburn/L'ville, Oregon/MSU, Bama/Wisconsin, and Oklahoma/Tennessee.
Be blessed.
OSU/VT last year wasn't a marquee matchup...it was just a loss for the Buckeyes. Oregon/MSU was...You had Clemson/Georgia with 2 new QBs, LSU/Wisconsin with no QBs. Week 2 has USC/Stanford, Texas/UCLA and you had Georgia/S. Carolina. That was it, those were your intriguing or marquee matchups. Think about those teams last year...outside of Oregon/MSU - all of those were duds even before they were played.
September 6th, 2015 at 9:05 PM ^
Not sure what you are talking about. I said nothing about the quality of the matchups.
I was replying to the OP about a bad week by the big ten. The media had a field day about how terrible the B1G was after that week last year.
FWIW I completely agree with you about how much better this year is, I just don't get how it has anything to do with my post.
I'm assuming you thought that was a response to your post not the OP?

I dont. I said in live chat I want the Big 10 to be brutal. You can go 12-0 and go the playoffs as seen by last year. Or 11-1 - all OSU needed to beat was 1 good team and 1 above ave team in MSU and Wisc.
It does get embarassing when we do lose to MAC teams on the regular though.
