OT- NHL Trade Deadline Day
Open thread re: Deadline Day. Lots of moving parts yesterday...Yandle to NYR, Cole to DET, Coburn to TBL, and this morning Petry (prospective Wings D-man target) to MTL.
So, what are some other moves that could go down? For Wings fans, will Holland go after Phaneuf? For Toronto, is the fire sale over? For Chicago, will Sharp be moved, will they find a replacement for Kane's injury? Any rumors or trades you'd like to see happen?
Then again it might be kinda anticlimactic as the big moves (Evander Kane, Clarkson, Jagr) are already done. But who cares, TSN and Sportsnet will both be covering it like fiends while we take it a little easier down here in the States.
If it's just Kindl and Weiss the Leafs want, I definitely think that's worth it. Phaneuf isn't what he once was but if used as say a second pair guy in Detroit, he would be great. Definitely an upgrade over everyone besides Kronner and DeKeyser.
I do worry about trading Weiss now though, since Helm looks to be out for a while.
It's his contract that worries me... and he's another lefty D-Man
That's fair. I don't think it would be a massive upgrade long term but it could push the Wings a bit higher this season. Capgeek is awol so I don't totally know how much the Wings have to play with in years after this; right now they have money to play with. My guess is Phaneuf would slot in kinda where Quincey does going forward.
Heck maybe we can con Shanny into retaining some salary. They essentially just ate all of Nathan Horton's salary in the Clarkson trade...Bell and Rogers don't care.
Franzen isn't going anywhere...cap recapture penalty on that contract is massive. He will probably end up like Pronger if he gets hurt again next season.
I know he probably isn't worth the 5 mil for the term...but in terms of bad contracts, its not that bad (compare for example to Clarkson). The cap will be going up and if you're paying that for a 3rd or 4th defenseman...yes it is damaging, but less so because of the good deals that Kronwall signed and Dekeyser essentially taking a bridge deal.
on how serious they are at making a push for Z & P to win the cup this year. Not sure how many years they have left in them and I could see the Wings going all in to make a push this year.
Yeah, they are in a tough (yet enviable by many teams) spot because their talent is just starting to blossom (Nyquist, Tatar, DeKeyser, Sheahan, Mrazek etc.) but the leadership is getting close to winding down. I think the Wings could win the East this year (though wouldn't put money on them against MTL or PIT) but I don't see any moves to be made at the deadline that really are going to move the needle. Even the Cole deal...he's a fine player and I like the deal but that more just shores up injuries.
I think we could still contend for a couple more seasons with Pav and Hank playing a top-6 role. Then, they will pretty much be done.
The Wings better be at least the fourth seed. It's nice to have home ice in the first round.

The feel seems to be that they won't make any more moves today. Granted they already have Vermette and Timonen in place from over the weekend. Unless an amazing opportunity comes out, Sharp will be staying here (and don't believe the awful rumors going around). Only real name out there being shopped around is Raanta (right now not even on the NHL team), but would have to be the right deal.
Bottom line for the Hawks, they hope with the current deals already made that they can get to the 2nd round of the playoffs and have Kane back by then...worst case the Semi's, but I don't know if they can win two rounds without Kane on the ice.
Those were both smart moves. They didn't give up much at all (yes a first rounder, but you have to do that to allow your core to make a run.)
Chicago is still a really talented team but as the poster below commented...they are probably in trouble starting with the first round. Maybe Kane can get back for the playoffs. If so I think they'd be my pick in the West.
If the season ended today, the'd be matched up with St. Louis. Even with Kane, that's a very tough matchup for them. He won't be ready by then, so the next month or so is very important for them to get as many points as possible. They have the opportunity with an easier schedule, and play St. Louis twice in the last week of the year (don't play Nashville at all).
With the bear of the division they are in
Nashville and St. Louis are built to grind out a playoff series against Chicago. Some must see hockey coming up!
Chris Summers got moved yesterday, to the Rangers.
Hopefully Petry to Montreal doesn't send Greg Pateryn down. He was playing well after getting called up.
I would still take the Rangers in a 7 game series. As a Wings fan, New York is the team in the east that really scares me. I would rather go up against Price than Lundqvist.
Price scares me way more than lundqvist does, Wings always struggle against hot goalies in the playoffs.
Come playoff time, the Rangers will launch Kreider into Price again. The Habs are still too smurf-like to do anything to stop it.
Lundqvist is waaayy better looking than Price.
As a die-hard Rangers fan, this scares the shit out of me. Playoff success will boil down to Hank's health. This year's team does have a special feel, though.
if it's for Smith and Weiss. Kindl and Weiss yes, in a heartbeat.

"The Red Wings and Maple Leafs continue to discuss the potential move. Detroit is trying to get the cap hit down to $5 million."
I'm not as big a Smith fan as some but I wouldn't do that.
I still think Phaneuf would be a good fit with Babcock and the Wings system(where he doesn't have to be the leader). Also, dealing Smith would make sense since there's a logjam on D with Ouellet and Machenko ready to play full time.
Kronwall-Ericsson
DeKeyser-Phaneuf
Quincey-Marchenko
Ouellet
I'd definitely take that. Ouellet and Marchenko's ceilings are almost certainly above Smith's. He hasn't progressed nearly as much as he should have and he still makes at least one or two boneheaded mistakes per game.
Is there still hope for Sproul? I haven't heard anything about him recently.
He had a really bad start to the season, and he hasn't been as good as Marchenko and Ouellet.
Yes, but still needs more time in the minors. He was recently ranked as the Wings #6 prospect.

With all the forward talent, I'm fine with Weiss going but Smith is troublesome. I think Ouellet and Marchenko are ready but the Wings braintrust will hopefully get Toronto to pay some of the Phaneuf's salary. Not sure if that impacts the salary cap hit of Phaneuf
The whole reason Toronto overpaid for Phaneuf was because they were terrified of letting him go without a replacement.
They still don't have a replacement so unless the Wings are willing to provide one, which they aren't, the trade isn't going to happen.
Would Wings fans be interested in Dan Boyle? He's owed $4.5M/yr through 2015-16 and can be had for a bag of pucks.
No. Kinda glad we didn't sign him last year now.
Weiss is easily replaceable. Smith has upside but have a lot of upside D-man prospects.

The logic is that "It's Toronto," and that being a storried Original Six team with a great history is enough to pull in any coach they want. Nothing more. That probably would be enough if he was coaching in Florida or New Jersey or something, but not the Wings.
Just like how Michigan fans think that they can take their pick from the most successful coaches in college hockey to replace Red Berenson.

My token Canadian friend is a die hard Leafs fan and he's so sure Babcock is coming. I don't believe him, but he's very confident. He says that he's been at Detroit a long time and would like a new challenge. Also, he doesn't believe the Wings can pay what the Leafs are willing to give him. Lastly, they've been holding out on hiring a new coach even though there are some solid options out there, Bylsma, Tortorella, and the team has completely tanked.
Your friend is delusional. There is absolutely no way in hell Babcock leaves the Wings for Toronto. He's got a young team full of potential and one of the most stable and high quality upper managment teams in the game. Toronto is a dumpster fire that will never go out because their rabid media shit show will always be holding a lighter and a can of gas.
They have terrible players, no goalie, bad contracts like Phaneuf, and a joke of a GM. I'm sure Babcock is planning his trip down the 401 as we speak......Only team I could see him leaving us for would be the Habs and they're not in need of a coach and prefer francophones anyways.
