OT: Thursday night drinking thread & Michigan Beers

Submitted by taistreetsmyhero on

To kick off the night's drinking thread, I thought I'd share my recent beer drinking story.

I got a pretty neat birthday gift back in December--my girlfriend went to 8 Degrees Plato Beer Co in Ferndale, MI and picked out 25 beers from Michigan to celebrate my 25th birthday.

Neither of us are beer aficionados by any stretch, so many of the beers were new to me. We split one of the beers between us about every other night for the last month and a half and recently finished them all. List of the 25 beers in order that we tried them, with my favorite ten bolded and ones I hadn't tried before italicized:

Full Circle

North Peak's American Wheat IPA

Bell's Christmas Ale

Good Humans

Jaw Jacker

Mayan Mocha Stout

How Now Brown Cow

Phat Abbot Ale

Bell's Cherry Stout

Greenbush White winter ale

Atwater's Purple Gang Pilsner

1825

Loch Down

North Peak's Chocolate Stout

Bell's Midwestern Pale Ale

Bell's Two Hearted

Bean Flicker

Crooked Tree IPA

Closure Ale

Greenbush IPA

Atwater's Dirty Blonde

North Peak's IPA

Bell's Third Coast

Huma Lupa Licious

Oberon

-----------

Some thoughts:  I really like beer. Also, I had no taste for IPAs until I tried all these beers. I still can't get behind Huma Lupa, but maybe with time.

So, MGoFriends, what's on tap?

Had a homebrewed Double IPA I made and tapped a new keg of a Hazelnut Brown Ale.

Can't get more Michigan than stuff I brewed myself I guess.

HumaLupaLicious is ok. I don't think I've had a Short's beer that I really liked. However, you should really try Hopslam. If you want a well balanced IPA, hunt that down.

Last night, got to try fresh Alpine Hoppy Birthday, Nelson, and Duet on draft which made its debut here in the DC area.

Tonight I'm drinking some Toppling Goliath Brewing Zeelander that a friend just sent.

Next Friday, heading up to Vermont to pick up fresh Heady, visit Hill Farmstead, etc.

My (beer) life is pretty good.

Enjoy your trip up in VT. HF is like a second home to me.  Be sure to find some second fiddle and SoS while in VT (I would imagine you already know that, considering you're drinking Toppling Goliath).

I'm looking forward to all the Alpine being regularly distribued here. Green Flash is building across the street from my house. I see myself spending many nights there.

You guys ever head to HF for their big time releases (Ann, Aaron, etc)?!  Never had any HF myself but it's obviously "the shit".  Those aforementioned beers have some damn high trade value (not that I'm one to look at these beers as commodities as some do); someday I'll partake in enjoying.

I don't know how big into the scene you are, but my avatar is the HF logo. I previously went up for the annual parties, but now i stick to just winter visits. No one from outside the New England area dares to drive the backroads of VT in the middle of winter, unless you are accustomed to it.  I try to get up there often, but I can't make it as much anymore.  Fortunately, I have a great relationship with the HF staff and ownership. So, I don't miss out on much. I would highly recommend the trip if you ever get a chance.

Edit: If you are trying to get your hand on some HF let me know. I'm sure we could work something out.

Thanks for the response. Yea I've gotten pretty caught up in this, dare I say it, hobby, over the last 2 years. It's a very rewarding venture though; nothing like being able to consume one's hobby and treat one's self to world class drink. Don't let my wallet hear me say it's rewarding. I'm honestly not too familiar with how they operate and release their beers, again, I just see certain big time beers they release going for big whalez. But by the sounds of it everything they do is at least really, really good! Pretty cool you've gotten in good with the folks up there. And yea, at some point when I can get up to the Northeast, I'll be visiting (a marriage is likely in the next couple years so a bachelor party and touring beer destinations is also likely). Would love to work something out sometime for some beers. Again, I'm in Iowa and the biggest asset I bring to the table is Toppling Goliath (though I'm not near the in-crowd as you and don't have the inside track on things like KBBS and Mornin' Delight..if only). King Sue is hopefully coming out soon-ish again, though, and Pseudo Sue and other great beers are distributed to where I'm at frequently so I do have it pretty good.
