OT: Pączki Day - Fat Tuesday

Submitted by goblueram on

It's Fat Tuesday.  Who's eating Pączki today?  What else are you indulging in?

Got these at the French Market here in Chicago:

Pączki day is actually celebrated on the last Thursday before Lent aka Tłusty Czwartek (Fat Thursday) in Polish...so you're alittle late to the party. You can also celebrate twice next year.

on the way back from a Northern Michigan vacation to my home in Ohio. Hit up Busch's on Plymouth & Green Rd-- got a 12 pk of traditional flavors (lemon, raspberry, custard, apple) and then a 4 pk of each of the "gourmet" flavors-- maple bacon, smores, and salted caramel. Brought 'em into work and gone in 60 seconds. Lots of Detroit / Chicago / Cleveland ex-pats here in Dayton.

Going to finish off my night the right way with some homemade paprikas that are in the crockpot right now, some fried kiszka, a couple farmer cheese pierogi, and wash it all down with a 4 - 6 pk of Zywiec.

WHOOOO STOLE THE KISZKA?

NOOOOOBODY!

My boss brought in Paczkis from Maier's Bakery in Morton Grove IL. She brought all sorts (banana, apple cinnamon, strawberry, raspberry, nutella), and I am having a banana (with real banana pieces) and custard one right now, it is seriously incredible. The nutella ones are killer too. So, if you are looking for a place in the northern burbs of Chicago, that's a pretty good one. Line was over 45 minutes long though per my boss, and they close at 330.

Currently on a break from a meeting, but someone here did indeed brave the lines at New Palace in Hamtramck (hopefully, they get to charge that time - it WAS for work) to get five dozen or so to bring to this meeting. Prune and plum are gone, but there are plenty of custard ones left strangely enough, and that's fine because that's a particular favorite of mine. Not surprisingly, the caffiene buzz is now enhanced by the sugar buzz, and I am sure it means I'll be asleep at my desk after the crash later.

Barney' s Bakery in Bay City makes the best! Already had a blueberry and a lemon. Holding off for the custard. Feeling the sugar coma coming on.

It's a small company and a few potential participants had to cancel, but we had four excellent crock pots of chili available.  I had a small bowl of each to be as fair as possible.  I'm having a hard time deciding.  I was worried people wouldn't eat the stuff; that was unfounded, free food is a huge magnet in any workplace.

I got a trophy for the winner, with the idea that if this  becomes an annual event, it would pass to next year's winner.  It's a small ceramic salsa bowl shaped like a Fresno chile:

For the previous 3 Fat Tuesdays and couldn't find any paczki in the whole state. Now that I'm back in Michigan, I got up at 6 AM to hit up Big City, Small World Bakery on Miller in Ann Arbor for the first 4 raspberry paczki off the line. Making up for lost time never tasted so damn good!

Im worried.  So I had the exact one in the picture by the OP.  The dough seemed a little dry and more dense like regular bread. I was expecting the lightness/fluffyness and moistness of a glazed doughnut and more flakey like an actual pastry.  Something more like that.  It was mostly dough and then there was maybe a small center of filling that was maybe a little smaller than a golfball size. The filling I had was pretty dang good, but it was just one bite out of 12 that wasnt the dough. Whats wrong with me?  I like bacon.  I like all the other things people like. . .
